- Progranism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71A middle school student was suspended for three days for reading a book because it contained ideas, school officials said. The book is "a stimulant that has no other redeeming quality," said Amy Palermo, schools superintendent.
- xgravix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+64Well, Amy Palermo got what she wanted, her name in the news... Now she can look like she's being "tough on substance abuse" when she runs for superintendent again next term.
Goddamn politicians... - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50This is stupid. I'm sure if the other kid had a heart condition, which is the possibility in this, being in middle school he should know what could KILL HIM. School officials are just stupid these days.
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49I feel like an old-timer. I'm 30. In High School we had a smoking section! Across the street at the park kids would go and get high and come back to class. The whole school knew about it so the administration had to as well. (But the people who did it were labelled burnouts and pretty much social outcasts. Kids who wanted to do well in school were not influenced by them and pretty much had nothing to do with them. It is not "infectious.")
We are becoming so goddamned PC it makes me sick. Land of the Free my ass. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36The gum has "no other redeeming quality"? If they suspend everyone who brings something with "no other redeeming quality" to school, then they're going to have to suspend a lot of kids...
That's just plain silly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37http://www.burrell.k12.pa.us/burrellsd/site/default.asp

- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I bet none of the teachers would ever dream of drinking coffee in the staff room.
- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Apparently this school is pretty strict: "The school has soda machines, but they aren't turned on during school hours and drinks containing caffeine aren't sold in the lunchroom." From the http://www.joltgum.com/ site: "2 pieces of jolt gum = 1 cup of coffee." I imagine that kids are allowed to bring soda to school and so I would conclude that there is no real difference between a mountain dew given to a student at lunch and this.
- scootinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Do they suspend kids for bringing Cokes to school?
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26"the gum is "a stimulant that has no other redeeming quality""
public school is "busy work that has no other redeeming quality" anyways... - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22What if the recipient couldn't walk *and* chew gum at the same time?
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Eh. I got suspended from highschool for having an X-men action figure, I ***** you not.
They said it was pointy, and could pose a threat.
I mean, maybe if I was in kindergarten. And if soft flexible plastic is really all that "pointy." - jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Here in Washington if you are drinking any sort of candy or soda or energy drinks during/at school you can legallly get arrested... It's against the law to drink any of those at school during school hours...Kind of sucks...
- holmes101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This is absolutely f-ing retarded. People like the one that got suspended will probably kill everybody at her school eventually because of this.
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17...and they blame video games...
- infermon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18A kid at my school got detention for chugging milk
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17but it sure as ***** aint a stimulant!
- winampman2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Yeah, they do get suspended for bringing coke, even if they dont snort it.
- ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Hmmm I wonder how much coffee those teacher's drink in a morning / day? How does this seem right or fair. At least with some caffeine they'll stay awake in class right? I mean I graduated in 2002 but what's going on in our schools? This is beyond over-kill. It seems like the teachers need to do some growing up.
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Oh and did I mention Coffee is perfectly LEGAL at school during school hours??
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Fahrenheit 451 of course.
- gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No other redeeming quality? What about fresh breath?
- Morphine7399, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12While in elementary school, I was suspended and forced to talk to a police officer for giving another student sleepy time tea.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14School Rent-A-Cop: You're under arrest. Spit out the caffinated substance and step away from the wrapper.
- geoffpado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12All you complaining about getting suspended/in trouble/confiscated have nothing on me. Let me count what I've gotten in trouble over: PDA (keeping homework), Ubuntu CD (it's a virus!), milk bottle (one of the small ones), laptop (for after-school meeting. I had it in a bag, not out), and last but certainly not least: a book (Learning Python).
- Dmartinez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Being able to get through the day is a redeeming quality to me...
- xeroskill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+153 letters for describing this...
WTF - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You know, at that point I would point to the writing end of a pencil and call the faculty member who said that a stupid *****.

Bring back the bullies and burnouts, its much better than the tightly wound administrators who are too afraid of getting sued all the time... - shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10To: Gatesophile
Is that coffee shop called Java City?
We have a coffee shop, and it keeps the kids awake during class at 7:25am.
I really hope that suspension gets overturn though, how's that going to look on their school record? Suspension for 3 days; infraction - sharing gum. - redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10God, the filler material that passes for education these days is a depressant that "has no redeeming qualities".
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I bet that ***** never gave coffee to his friends that came to visit him. At least not prior to asking them if they have a heart condition.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This is LAME. Pop wasn't restricted because of the caffeine, it was restricted because of the SUGAR, and the fact that it was contributing to the epidemic of childhood obesity. Besides, what would prevent a student from bringing their lunch, including a thermos with coffee in it, or even pop?
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Chugging milk is *dangerous*. Well, maybe not that dangerous, but it'll make you vomit pretty hard.
Try (or rather don't) drinking an entire carton or two of milk, and tell me what you think of this guy's detention after you do. It's something about the milk that your body can't take, and what you end up spewing out smells pretty rotten. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The more I hear stories of school administrators abusing their power, the more I become convinced that these people actually hate kids deep down. They know they themselves are nothing but worthless low-level bureaucrats with dead-end jobs and dead-end lives. And when they see all these kids who are young, energetic, vibrant, idealistic, with all kinds potential for success and happiness, they feel envy.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14What if it had been given to someone who was allergic to preservatives?
What if the person had braces?
What if they was real' bad fer gettin' stuff stuck in they's wind-pipes? - taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9studies show that children with ADHD can benefit from caffeine, sugar is a different story.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11i was mindin my own business, chillin out, this kid comes along and steps on my head.
a few days later, i taunt him matador style. guess who got suspended. - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Some lunchladies are douchebags and abuse thier "power" and [cartman] autoritaugh [/cartman] They won't let people have open drinks in the hallway. One time, I almost got a detention for standing on a pile of snow less than a foot tall. God, I hate stupid authority figures.
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8why would you have an xmen action figure in highschool?
Was it wolverine, those claws man, its the claws... - 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I just sent this email:
Hello Amy,
I read that you recently on the internet that a student from your school board (where you are a superintendant) was suspended for three days for sharing chewing gum. At first I was shocked, that someone with an apparent abundance of education (you are listed as having a doctrate on your school website), would allow something so moronic.
But then I read that you are quoted as saying "What if the gum had been given to a student with a heart condition?".
And thus I understand what happened here.
You are ***** retarded.
I pose to you this question, "What if a nation, that was run by corprations and idiotic politicians (are you an elected official, because you qualify for the second) and had idiots educating its children, grew into a super power of a nation that abused its authority and acted without real thought or incite into reality, set about a path of hegemonic greed and brought distruction and corruption to the world?"
My answer is simple. Great people respond to the evils you propagate, and crash planes into buildings in your "great" country, and you ***** deserve it. Its a shame that the children of your nation deserve better than you.
- My Name here - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7We actually sell coffee at our school. Soda too, but that's not as surprising.
We have a student-run coffee stand for one of the business classes. They run the coffee stand in the morning. It's great! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7what the hell? caffeine gum helps wake a kid up in the morning and to be more productive in class. no redeeming quality? i'd be asleep in every class if it weren't for caffeine.
- Kazenodeku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Caffeine isn't the only issue- in my (california) high school, they were discontinuing chips, cookies, and all other food and drinks with a certain level of fat/sugar content. That was just last year.
I made a decent amount of money selling candy and sodas I bought from Safeway to other students, though. (Bonus for me: I worked in the lunchline) 200% profit. - Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nope but some digger's kids probably are. DUGG DOWN
- supcraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Instead of suspending/expelling the actual "criminals" at school, these administrators waste time harassing innocent kids for harmless behavior. The world is turning into nothing but idiotic rules that are read literally, instead of using common sense and having some compassion for one another.
- marvy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Exactly. When will they figure out that this over-prohibition does not lead to the intended effect? It's not only at schools: The overly-strict alcohol laws only lead to kids not learning how to cope with it. The death penalty hasn't done anything to slow down crime. And worst of all, these zero-tolerance rulings at schools only lead to more frustrated students. I think they should start treating these students as grown-ups, not like wild animals that need to be contained.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6R.|E.|S.|P.|O.|N.|S.|i.|B.|i.|L.|i.|T.|Y.| ... My anti Caffiene Gum Drug.
- infermon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8he chugged milk and got in trouble, no mess.
