- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14You're joking right? XP and Vista are not largely identical. Vista has huge improvements over XP and after running the Beta and RC releases I am ready to get my hands on a Gold release of that OS.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Microsoft announced today a host of other devices that will be ready to automatically reduce their feature-set if you're thought to be running a bootleg version of Vista! Intel announces their new 3.0Ghz chips will throttle back to 4.77Mhz. 3Com announces that their network adapters will gear back to 10mbps, and Creative-based sound cards will drop their sound levels to 8k! All of this is designed, according to Microsoft, to give customers a level of comfort knowing they are running Genuine Software from Microsoft!"
- pidge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7My laptop is "Vista Ready" (has sticker to show this) but when I attempt to install the latest Vista RC2 build, it denies me saying that my BIOS is not compatible with Windows Vista. I have the latest BIOS from Dell for my laptop even. Funny cause I don't ever recall ever running into an issue installing an OS. I believe someone even installed Windows XP on a 486 a while back.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7See i wait to buy a new computer until a new windows release. I'm about to purchase my new one and i got my current shortly after xp. This way my computer is always sufficient for the OS and by the time they new windows comes out i generally need a new one anyways. I also use my old computer (still pretty powerful) for the latest linux distros.
I love it when I submit a comment and it doesn't post. Second try... - DerGeist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If your new machine uses a new type of BIOS called EFI (also used in Mactels) then it won't be compatible with Vista until the official release. Just a thought.
- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The only change I can seem to focus on from XP to Vista is it's Licensing which in this day and age can be considered Terrorism in it's self.
- Chrysalid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This sounds a lot like a hardware manufacturer conspiracy. In the past, there was a time when we selected an operating system that was compatible with our hardware, but now it's vice versa. Of course, if your intention is to slow down your system, Vista is the right choice.
- Xaox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@snowcone
I don't think he is joking, are you? After the news about the limited transfers of the _RETAIL_ versions of Vista, why in the hell will anybody want to switch?
So far here is everything that is new about vista:
- License Verification that can shut down your PC, check!
- Kernel mandated and hardware enforced DRM to kill fair use, check!
- Nasty license terms like 1 transfer, check!
- Better security, ummm wasn't XP supposed to be "more secure"? I'll believe it when I see no more pwoned windows boxes DDoSing and spewing spam.
- New GUI that kinda looks like OSX, oops - you have to buy a "premium" version for that!
The only new features that I had herd were going to be in Vista that I care about at all were Monad and WinFS, but they were removed.
Why again would anybody want to upgrade? - pidge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's hilarious. Don't forget graphics cards will lower their resolution and color depth mode to EGA mode, hard drives throttle down to floppy drive speeds. But don't fret for Microsoft has just announced that it will be bringing back Microsoft BoB as part of the Microsoft Genuine Advantage program to assist the customers with their purchase of a new license for their valid copy of Windows Vista when Windows Genuine Advantage fails to properly detect a valid version that is running on a person's PC. Microsoft expects profit to increase 25% by Q307 which it will invest in their Home division to come up with silly marketing schemes and increase its market share in the gaming console arena where the Xbox 360 is preparing for the onslaught of new consoles from Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft hopes to break the record set by the original Xbox console for largest loss per console, beating rivals Nintendo and Sony by an estimated $2.7 billion dollars in losses for fiscal 2007 year.
- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Someone alert the media, Evil-Dragon will not be buying Vista. MS stock plummets.
- jsusanka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't wait to read all the EULA's and DRM licenses that come with.
I bet they will announce a new certifiication
Microsoft License DRM Professional - MLDP
can't wait. - aitf311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm anxious to see these new ram/hard drive hybrids that they keep talking about. Booting in 2 seconds would definitely be nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@DerGeist - so that's why my copy of RC2 on Parallels won't install I take it? Been looking for a solution so I can check out that shiny new minesweeper!!
- 8bit_Hero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WoW is Vista Ready. I tried playing WoW on XP at 800x600 with all my setting on low and it would be choppy. I installed RC1 and now i can run it at 1024 with all the setting maxed and it's smooth as hell.
- Evil-Dragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4In my opinion Microsoft have seriously started going off the rails and have failed to keep promises of features that were supposed to be in Vista. Even if some of the features that are supposed to be in Vista then you'll have to pay a premium for them to be included in your copy. From working in an IT support environment i know that most people are confused about what version of Windows they are supposed to buy (and that's with XP). Imagine what's going to happen when Vista has 4 different versions and i have to try explain what version they need.
Forcing users to buy Vista for DirectX 10 to me is just blackmail. They cannot seriously suggest to me that XP cannot be updated to accept DirectX 10?
Vista is nothing more than an update of XP, with a interface that is seriously nothing new, a kernal update to supposedly make things more secure and antipiracy measures. It seems to me they care more about the antipiracy features more than they care about real features that were cut out of Vista.
Oh btw i actually own XP licenses and will not be upgrading to Vista. It is nothing more than a money making scheme. - DerGeist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@thespace: You bet. See the following article:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/10/sorry-mactel-owners-windows-vista-wont-support-efi/ - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monad is now called Powershell, and can be downloaded seperately from Vista.
- DerGeist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@Snowcone: Obviously it was a joke. It's early, laugh will ya?
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a good step... because right now getting drivers for vista is a pain... and with the 64bit version of vista means more 64bit drivers!!!
- djliquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^ duh. ;)
Again, this will help BOOST lagging hardware sales. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I do believe this is the end of Microsoft, the world as we know it, and I feel fine
(bow) - aitf311, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think for the people that are likely to get confused, the "HOME" on the box will hopefully give away which version they are supposed to get.
I am with you 100% on it being more of an XP update. But then again, isnt every OS just an update of the OS before it? - DerGeist, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Oh boy, a chance to re-buy all that software and hardware I already spent so much money on to get a new OS that is largely identical to the one I have now!
But the updated Minesweeper makes it worth every penny! - Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5"Why again would anybody want to upgrade?"
DirectX 10. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Are they gonna do like they did with XP... give out the free upgrades when it becomes available?
- 22ANBU01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1thats rather nasty for microsoft of doing that. I'm not saying i've ever used a pirated version of XP before >_> but why anger people who would rather switch to another OS which is far superior then the one that MS is providing?....OH RIGHT MONEY!
