- greensky, on 11/13/2009, -3/+25I still have a really hard time believing they won't follow their standard practice of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.
- darkciti2, on 11/13/2009, -6/+28Call me a cynic, but there is no way they are doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. Their past history has demonstrated their "win at all costs" philosophy.
As much as I'd love to believe they are doing this for altruistic purposes, I smell a rat. - MWeather, on 11/13/2009, -4/+25http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_sy ...

"The Redmond outfit has just bought the Teamprise-related assets of SourceGear which will mean developers using the Eclipse IDE or operating on multiple operating systems, including Unix, Linux and Mac OS X, to build applications with Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server."
That doesnt make sense does anyone read this ***** before hand? - MtheoryX, on 11/13/2009, -2/+15Came here looking for this... Digg doesn't disappoint.

- FlaNative, on 11/14/2009, -4/+15Sounds like Microsoft wants us all to catch MONO.
1. Embrace.
2. Extend.
3. Extinguish. - TheWindBlows, on 11/14/2009, -0/+9Use with Ubuntu Ultimate Edition!
- bdbr, on 11/14/2009, -2/+10So Microsoft purchased a proprietary tool, to integrate into their proprietary tools, which allows code to run on various OS, all but one of which is proprietary. Why does the author consider this embracing open source?
- rmxz, on 11/14/2009, -1/+9Makes sense to me. They seem to love Linux for scaling.
Microsoft's most scalable database product (DATAllegro) is still Linux based[1]
"DATAllegro. A Microsoft Company. ...the nodes within a DATAllegro appliance are in fact self-contained database servers running Ingres on SUSE Linux."
And Microsoft regularly uses Linux (via Akamai)[2] to handle spikes in their internet traffic such as around product launches: [2]
And it's not just Linux. They seem to love some F/OSS java products so much they use them (hadoop) to help power Bing search[3]
Perhaps they find F/OSS works so well, they want to let their customers in on it too.

- Greg2k, on 11/14/2009, -4/+7Companies are not meant to be altruistic, and they only follow the "don't be evil" line when its profitable.
- InactiveUser, on 11/14/2009, -0/+3I pwn your period with my apostrophe.
- seltaeb4, on 11/14/2009, -3/+6Of course! Microsoft is only too happy to take something free and then charge people for it.
- InactiveUser, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2Encircling is more apt.

Fitting... - JohnnySoftware, on 11/14/2009, -0/+2tyvm for mentioning hadoop, rmxz - it looks verrry interesting
- PinkyTheWinky, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1I hate team foundation... the other day it lost a few thousand lines of code... good thing I did a traditional backup. The locking mechanism is ***** and the product just sucks ass. Your better off using a shred folder for source control. If you don't believe try moving a project around on your harddrive if its under source control.
- rmxz, on 11/14/2009, -0/+1Why's it a surprise. They ship Linux as a component of their high-end database systems (link and quote in the comments above). They had Linux IE versions. Why not tools too.
- jv2k, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1It helps them improve their products for free. I don't see why it's hard to believe they'd do this.

- worldgate989, on 11/14/2009, -4/+4The only one racist here is you. Its true that microsoft does not like open source because it competes with them, but the description is fairly accurate and in no way declares the step-child to be of any race or color.

......i guess. - rmxz, on 11/14/2009, -2/+2Microsoft's true feelings towards DEVELOPERS are revealed by fascinating quotes out of that company comparing developers to one-night stands and pawns:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9007527/Iow ... "Microsoft Corp. technical evangelist referred to independent software developers writing for Windows and the company's other software platforms as "pawns" and compared wooing them to convincing someone to have a one-night stand, according to testimony presented Friday against Microsoft in an ongoing antitrust case in Iowa." - nepidae, on 11/14/2009, -2/+1Whoops, you are right. Redheads are to be mocked.
