- eviltrunkz, on 07/16/2009, -25/+92Microsoft's got balls, I'll give them that. It's a shame they'll close down in a couple of months.
- Luminoth545, on 07/16/2009, -47/+96To be perfectly honest, nothing sells OSX better than placing it directly next to a Windows OS. Say what you will about its versatility, OSX is sexier than Win7.
- DealCracker, on 07/16/2009, -14/+55This will be great. I can see it now...
Giant portraits of Gates and Balmer on the walls...
Bookshelves lined with helpful titles such as Windows 7 for Dummies...
Free seminars on how to remove spyware, install firewalls and antivirus software...
A showcase of the lastest "smart" phones running Windows Mobile (hopefully there will still be some in production when the store opens)...
And when MS closes the stores down, Google will be able to move right in. - snafflepaffle, on 07/16/2009, -15/+49Doesn't this just take the copycat meme to new heights? We're going to copy Apple's stores and put them in the SAME LOCATIONS.
Sorry, we just don't have any ideas of our own. - Warom, on 07/16/2009, -26/+56Actually, I find Windows 7 more pleasing with its more colorful approach rather than the grey of OS X. Infact, you are just trying to make it out like this is another victory for Apple when in reality it is not. If your Windows computer doesn't work and you went into the apple store they are just going to go for the hard sell of OS X telling you that the reason your computer is slow is because it isn't running Apple software on Apple hardware. However, with a Microsoft store right next door, you can easily go in and I expect they will have their own "Genius" help which if you told them your problem they might try and help you with a few tips like reducing the number of start up programs running.
- borez, on 07/16/2009, -1/+31Expect upper management geek fights in the car park.
- cthellis, on 07/16/2009, -4/+31Meh. They can keep it open as long as they want to keep feeding it money, same as any of their many other projects that take years of operating in the red, like their online services.
The Xbox seems pretty successful to most people, but it would have sunk any normal company. It took more than seven years to have a profitable quarter, and they have somewhere between a $7 to $9 billion hole to dig their way out of still.
They can shrug off any retail losses as an "advertising expense." - readme, on 07/16/2009, -4/+28Will they have a Genius Bar analogue where I can bring my Xbox 360 in when it craps out every three months?
- MtheoryX, on 07/16/2009, -7/+30Apple is not Microsoft's worst enemy. Google is.
- zakuropan, on 07/16/2009, -4/+26Please. Microsoft is Microsoft's worst enemy, not Apple.
- repubocrat, on 07/16/2009, -14/+33That's the plan anyway, if it's anything like an OS release, it will be YEARS before they actually open doors..
- motivatedguy, on 07/16/2009, -3/+21What are they gonna sell? Software, keyboards and mice?
- The2DQuartet, on 07/16/2009, -6/+22FTA: "Turner said Microsoft’s retail locations will not mimic the white, holy aesthetic of Apple’s"
Instead they'll be heavy on details and power-hungry eye-candy while behind the scenes the whole shop is made out of bits of old plywood and sticky tape... - Chrysalii, on 07/16/2009, -2/+17HAHAHAHA you're so ***** original and clever that everyone in the past 15 years has copied you.
Somehow your genius has spread backwards in time. - Falldog, on 07/16/2009, -4/+18Oh hahaha I get it. Never would have thought of that one.
- Spire3660, on 07/16/2009, -6/+20OSX, and most of Apple's products are dictated to you by Steve's aesthetic. He has some slavish views on what should and should not be done, and its reflected in (some) of his products limited feature sets. Most Windows is designed by committee, which is kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, but works better for the large marketshare it addresses. I like OSX, i think its great, but they arent beholden to the same design goals MS is. MS has a HUGE job of trying to please everyone, Apple only has to please Steve and the cult. I am vastly oversimplifying but I hope you get my point.
I LIKE OSX, I own 2 mac minis, but windows is a better rounded product for the concerns it addresses.
All that being said, this is probably going to fall flat on its face. Microsoft has a very hard time being 'cool' - Warom, on 07/16/2009, -2/+15No, your wrong because you can go ahead and download the RC now and test it for yourself. This is not a trick that Microsoft is trying to pull, for example, with Vista the discontent can be seen as early as the betas. The hype wasn't created by Microsoft, the hype was created by the hundreds of thousands of impressed beta/rc testers.
- thejokell, on 07/16/2009, -6/+19Your fellow 15-year-old nerds that you bring to a LAN party are not the ones that would be swayed by a sales staff at either store.
- mbst2000, on 07/16/2009, -1/+13Your LAN parties sound ***** brilliant, will there be girls there?
- fragmit, on 07/16/2009, -3/+15Exactly, a company that is strapped for cash as much as Microsoft wont be able to last more than a few months next to an Apple store.. /s
- jeremymccurdy, on 07/16/2009, -0/+12Stop running your Xbox in an oven full of rare earth magnets, problem solved.
- techdever, on 07/16/2009, -2/+12Maybe they'll sell xbox and xbox games? oh wait, that does sell! Suck it apple fanboy
- Recidivus, on 07/16/2009, -3/+13People have been opening shops to sell their products a long time now...
I also fail to see what Apple has done that is so revolutionary, so unique, so stupendously awesome, and isn't based on previous ideas/products. - mrnathan, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9actually bluescreens are more relating to the shoddy construction of cheap ass computers ... which all have windows on them. Its not really a fault of the OS ... but in some cases ... it is.
- Zippo, on 07/16/2009, -7/+16I hate the ask the obvious, but have you ever actually used a Mac?
I used to say Macs suck all the time... I was a huge anti-Apple kid a few years ago. But, in reality, my only real experience with a Mac was using a friend's G3 iMac running OS 9 a couple times - not exactly the best experience.
I'm not saying you should switch... You're welcome to use whatever OS you want... but at least base your slandering on reason. - MacParrot, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11Cloud apps that you can't buy because
a) They are free
b) Still in beta
c) a and b - sodoh, on 07/16/2009, -2/+11I prefer OSX over Windows7 but Windows7 is certainly an excellent OS if compared against all other versions of windows.
Initial colours of an OS is how you define what you buy is probably not a good system. You do know you can change the colours in OSX?
Also why would anyone bring a windows box to an apple store to get fixed? - LordVance, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9They are still very, very deeply in the red on the Xbox. Profitable quarter != profitable project.
- Chrysalii, on 07/16/2009, -1/+9Zune
- JaycobC, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8Exactly! I'm not entirely fond of Mac OS myself, but that's because it's not for me. I've found Windows to work perfectly to my needs, but that doesn't mean I'll brag about it.
Now, in response to the article, I say good work Microsoft. The demo store was amazing, and it would be great to see that in practise. - DarkShroud, on 07/16/2009, -0/+8360s, 360 hardware, 360 games, PC Games, & their clothing line.
- cplusplus, on 07/16/2009, -4/+12More "innovation" from Microsoft. Back in the 80s Apple has a mouse interface they need one. Apple has an iPod they need a Zune. Apple has a store they need a store, ...
- Jeremyz0r, on 07/16/2009, -1/+9Welcome to 2009? (better than the black screen of nothing.)
- shrontzy, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8 You're a little too much of a Mac fanboy for anybody to believe anything you're saying.
- geoken, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8Now all you need is a time machine to take you back to '95 and your joke will be relevant.
- 4NDr01D, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8if only Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO was on Apple's Board of Directors
oh wait
he is... - RudeTurnip, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7@mrnathan: Kernel Panic. I've never seen one myself using OS X, but supposedly they can happen. I've only had a few BSOD's under XP and I put the blame squarely on the ***** drivers Logitech has been putting out as of recent.
- jrm125, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7This is going to be awesome...one way or another.
- norman619, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8I remember the little black bomb fondly....
- cthellis, on 07/16/2009, -4/+11Nono, it will just have half the features promised, and will operate a lot slower than regular stores.
- The2DQuartet, on 07/16/2009, -6/+13And when they do, nothing inside will work
- CressCrowbits, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8BSODs are 99% of the time caused by poorly written drivers. Oh, and by default you don't see them any more, the machine just reboots.
- SouthsideIrish, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7Apple fanboy here.
I have never seen Windows 7 do a blue screen of death. I hope to see one soon, but I have just about given up hope and I have the RC running on my MacBook Pro. - theaceoffire, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6^_^ It won't suck too badly (Once service pack 2 comes out)
- DaveClarkOne, on 07/16/2009, -4/+10Virus protection software
- norman619, on 07/16/2009, -2/+8Apple geniuses are anything but. I had the honor of listening to one try to explain what was wrong with a friend's Apple machine. He was amazingly clueless.
- DarkShroud, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6This is not the first time MS has opened retail outlets. In fact they had a few retail outlets open over a decade ago. Those were eventually close down because they did not have much to sell in them.
- djgreedo, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Go back?
- Subduction, on 07/16/2009, -4/+10Yeah, Mac is going to kick Windows 95's ass!
