- mattyboy555, on 11/06/2009, -9/+57MS and Sony still won't have Mario, Metroid and Zelda, the ONLY reason I bought a wii.
- veriix, on 11/05/2009, -10/+40Playing the wii for more then a day makes the wii seem crude. Ok, so I wiggle it instead of pressing a button? Awesome!
- arkwald, on 11/06/2009, -2/+28The Wii is also 3 year old tech at this point. So first off big whoop if you out Wii the Wii. Anyone with the motivation and budget could have done so at this point. Second of all just because you make a better console then the Wii doesn't mean your going to sell that much more than the Wii did. Especially now that motion sensing isn't quite so novel anymore. I would say that motion sensing would be a bare minimum thing for the next generation console.
If they wanted a real wow factor they would figure out something new that would be an improvement. Maybe some sort of intelligent matchmaking system that finds you compatible people to play with and bans n00bs. - 99XX, on 11/06/2009, -1/+26This article is almost all fluff piece.
- insidius, on 11/06/2009, -4/+29You should also ask then why xbox owners are still playing halo or why PS3 owners have sat around for years waiting for Gran Turismo 5 or why yet again there is another hyped Modern Warfare game.
But then, that would go against the point you were attempting to make wouldnt it? - RoroCo, on 11/06/2009, -13/+34The only way Microsoft can out Wii the Wii is for them to drop the price of the console to 100 dollars, sell millions of them, remove 3/4ths of their game library, and have it collect dust AND moss on my shelves.
- NJank, on 11/06/2009, -2/+19the motion-plus changes that, but I assume MS/Sony will have caught up. What nintendo did right was start getting games that people sit around a play as a social activity. The games without save points. Game sessions measured in minutes, not hours. sure, the controller novelty is wearing off, but it did the job and helped launch the Wii out in front. tons of people who would never buy an Xbox or PS3 because "they're not gamerz" bought a wii.
- Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -3/+18actually the motion controlling technology MS uses is totally different. wii uses bluetooth, natal uses video capture... not like they took a wiimote and slapped an xbox logo on it. Plus, the motion control idea is an industry changing development, do you really expect MS and sony to just kick back and let nintendo control the entire market ? please.
- Mike9824, on 11/06/2009, -2/+15If only there was a feature on Digg that would allow us to show we agree with or like a comment without having to actually reply.
- bigteebo, on 11/06/2009, -0/+13If it wasn't for "stealing" and possibly improving on it, wouldn't we all still be driving model T Fords?
- insidius, on 11/06/2009, -6/+19Do you work for a gaming company that is attempting to push "Micro Payments"? Your statement is terrible.
Micro payments and subscription gaming is the worst thing to happen to gaming and I have been going since the C64/Amiga 500 days. "Hey guys PAY ME 20 DOLLARS FOR THIS ONE MAP THAT YOU USED TO GET FROM THE MODDING COMMUNITY FOR NOTHING, ITS EVEN THE SAME QUALITY". "Whats that? You dont want to buy our overpriced 'Expansion Pack'"? "Then we will just lock all mods off so NAH". - gameboyhippo, on 11/06/2009, -2/+15If your game console is collecting moss, then either you live in a cave or your housekeeping skills are atrocious.
- darkphenox, on 11/06/2009, -3/+15Its not the same game its the same type of game.
- insidius, on 11/06/2009, -1/+12Why butthurt? I own every single console as well as a PC. I own almost every console from the last 20 years.
I just think that its a little hypocritical for picking on one console for doing exactly what all the others do. If I was butthurt I would point out that I have a chipped Wii sitting in the corner that I paid 300 bucks for and most of the games are that ***** I cant even be bothered to pirate them. Now THATS butthurt. - dig1x, on 11/06/2009, -1/+10I cant wait to see how Natal works with Windows 7's Multi-touch support.
I predict that Natal + W7 will be a "bigger deal" than it's use with Xbox 360. I hope that HTPC + Natal + Windows Media Center == Awesome. - diggbigwig, on 11/06/2009, -6/+14".... Nintendo has always lagged behind technology."? I'm not a gaming expert but isn't Microsoft the one playing technology catch-up here?
- Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -1/+9I'm with you man, don't know why you're being buried. Natal is going to be sweet.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 11/06/2009, -1/+9Natal uses a stereo camera rather than a single one. Stereo cameras are capable of producing a depth map that shows how far away things are from the camera by interpreting the difference between the left and right cameras. Not sure about Natal's camera, but many stereo cameras do this processing onboard using a processor in the device. This depth image is really what Natal will use to add the third dimension of movement, something the eye toy could not do.
- swissfizz, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8True, but I doubt they'd have done it at all if it wasn't for the kick up the behind the Wii provided.
Thumbs up to competition. - MacHarborGuy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+8"i don't get why people like playing the same game over and over and over again."
Resident Evil 5
Silent Hill 5
Ratchet and Clank
Left 4 Dead 2 - archer75, on 11/06/2009, -1/+8I don't even use our wii anymore. I even modded it, I can download all the games I want and still I don't use it. Even my daughter stopped using it.
- enantiodromia, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9really, this offended you guys enough to bury?
- EvilJelloMan, on 11/06/2009, -2/+9Actually, wii uses video as well, but a very different approach to video. Bluetooth is the data transfer technique, not the motion capture technique.
A more accurate comparison would be to say that wii uses accelerometers coupled with an IR-sensitive CCD camera to provide pointing and motion controls, while MS uses video capture and processing to detect player movements.
Bluetooth has exactly dick to do with the difference in the technologies. - philomatic, on 11/06/2009, -3/+9How is Natal different than the Playstation Eye? Serious question, everyone gets so excited whenever someone mentions Natal, but it seems like it's just the Playstation Eye, but maybe more accurate?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7No, we don't. It's a good thing that they're keeping the 360 alive. The 360 isn't a bad console and still feels fresh with all the updates they're doing. Releasing the 720 means that many 360 owners wouldn't be able to afford it and they'd split their userbase among two different systems. Also, the longer they put off the 720 the better it will be. If nobody else is planning a new console why should they release a new one? Plus, the only PC's that have much better graphics cost more than $400, so I don't see how you expect them to lower that price.
- SwingKid148, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7Only reason I got a wii was to play twilight princess and mario kart.
- enantiodromia, on 11/06/2009, -13/+19Can't wait for Natal.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Do you believe Nintendo invented videogames?
- fabio1, on 11/06/2009, -1/+6xbox360 and the ps3 are both "technologically superior" to Wii. Why does the wii sells more than both together?
Nintendo did a genius thing here. while the competition was busy trying to get the most technologically advanced graphics chip and cpu, they simply pointed their cannon at the user interface and completely changed it. And to top it off they grouped it with wii sports, which was the perfect way to demo their new control scheme. The whole package was the game changer.
Even if you're not impressed by the end result, you have to at least admire that Nintendo had the balls to completely rely on the controllers (as the wii is very similar to GC in all the rest of the specs) to go against MS and Sony and their "next generation" consoles. - ironrex, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5If they could make a gun peripheral that was comfortable to use and had instant feedback, I would prefer to use that rather than play fps on a computer. It would be a lot more fun to aim the gun at the screen. As it is now, I can't stand fps with a joystick.
- smemily, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5It's not the same thing over again. It's a franchise. A franchise with some amount of consistency in storyline, characters, and quality. People buy the next Mario game for the same reason they buy the new pizza from the same pizza joint instead of trying a new restaurant. It's something new, but you know to a certain extent what to expect.
- ironrex, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I'm with you Matt, I loved all three of those Wii versions. I liked each of them the most of their entire series. Sadly, my Wii hasn't been played in over a year, and likely won't be until a new mario, zelda, or metroid game are released for it.
- mattsull, on 11/06/2009, -2/+7It's just a pissing contest
- trpnblies7, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5Full body motion support just doesn't seem that interesting. If I have to stand up and move my entire body to play a baseball or basketball game, I'd rather just go outside and play the real thing. I play video games when I want to relax from the comfort of my couch, and simple hand/arm motion support is just fine for me.
I can already see the multitude of parents complaining to Microsoft because their children hurt themselves by slipping on the floor and crashing into things. - Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4that's the problem with PC's though... they are TOO upgradeable... every 6 months when the new batch of games come out, the system specs are higher and higher, and after a couple years your system won't even run the newest games. so annoying.
- bjs3171, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4I bought a PS3 last year for $400. No way in hell am I investing in a new console again for quite a few more years. I think these companies know they can't even begin to push a new generation.
This is a smart move on both of their parts, releasing this new hardware for the current system. It'll keep the generation fresh for a lot longer. - eviljolly, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5Not sure about you, but I'm pretty comfortable gaming on my PC for hours on end.
- smemily, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4I think the appeal of the video game vs real baseball or basketball is that with the video game you don't have to have nice weather out, and you can live in a NYC apartment with no baseball field for miles, and you don't even need to have friends.
- zuke004, on 11/06/2009, -0/+4Yeah because parents would rather have their kids sitting on thier ass eating cheatos and getting fat. /s
- HesComing, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5I didn't learn much new about Project Natal or Sony's version of it from this article. Anyone have a link that tells us more about where Natal is in development, or more of what it's like to use it?
- jshhmr, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3@archer, it says nothing about the console. It says that people are dumb enough to keep using the electronic device that has the worst failure rate in electronics history.
- Jpatano, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3search natal on youtube, there are some sweet videos.
- stuffradio, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3"Natal" is not the name for a console, read properly and you'd know that.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/06/2009, -2/+5neither did I. I have about 50+ Virtual Console and WiiWare titles installed on a memory card.
- jamesey, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3No one expected the wii to be the top motion sensor gaming console forever. It takes Nintendo to innovate and everyone else to copy.
- gameboyhippo, on 11/06/2009, -3/+6Why the Wii will still outsell the knock offs. Wii has Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and a whole slew of exergaming. People already have it in their home. The average soccer mom will see no need to spend $350 on a new console setup just for prettier graphics.
- darkphenox, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3a new mario game is being released in little over a week so it will be getting use soon.
- enantiodromia, on 11/06/2009, -14/+17Subscription gaming, downloadable content, and micro payments, are the best things to happen to video gaming since Doom. I'm sorry you don't appreciate these innovations. Perhaps you are too young, and have been spoiled by all the hard work which goes into keeping your tiny little attention span happy.
The rest of us remember Atari 2600 games costing the same price as games do today, so clearly the quality to cost ratio has gone way up.
Go ahead, play COMBAT on the Atari 2600 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_(video_game)] then Battlefield:1943 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_1943], then realize that Battlefield:1943 costs half as much as COMBAT did thirty years ago. - kmoed, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4From a hardened mouse & keyboard guy, the Nunchuck Wii Remote combo is pretty killer, if they only had some decent games to use it with......
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4"Their XBox machines have NEVER made a profit."
Did you get this info after a single search on Google, or did you actually do your... *GASP* Research!?! -
