- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What a freaking waste of materials. its already bad enough with AOL and their free cd *****.
- msgmsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well its not actually only a one-play deal...
how it works, is the cd is coated with a special chemical that gradually gets darker after being exposed to air. When you first get or "rent" the DVD, it comes in an airtight shrinkwrap-thing. After about 12 hours of being in the air, the chemical gets so dark that the laser cannot read through. this can be times according to the concentration of the chemical on the disk. - galapagos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so microsoft is going to lose a bunch of money on that crap instead of losing a bunch of money on piracy? yeah, that's a good idea
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like Divx. And that idea lasted how long?
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These DVDs should grow into sun flowers when you throw them away.
- immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Once again for the people who don't seem to understand, There will always be piracy period. The idea is to make it not worth doing the piracy. At $25 plus for a dvd it is too expensive for everyone to want to buy. If you cut that it in half, there would be much less piracy. If you dropped it further, even less. Does anyone remember the last failed attempt by sony that was defeated by a 2$ sharpie and cost them a hundred million in research. That would be a waste of $100 million. Most of which would have went into their pockets.
Greed by these companies is terrible. They need to do more with less and to release a better product at a lower price. That is the way to profit. I can see that before too long there will be less and less people willing to buy any of that crap. I am still hoping that Apple does well and starts pulling musicians away from the big companies so that the musicians can actually make some money too. Let those people who have been greedy for so long suffer like the rest of the world - silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, so now I'm supposed to pay more than a rental fee AND I'm supposed to buy new equipment to play it on? And this works for me WHY?!?
Yet another business plan that completely focuses on the business's dream scenario "What about...if people just gave us more money for no reason?" - Swipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe I can turn my TV room into a vacuum so I can watch the DVD forever
- 9mm_graphix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is getting as bad as the government with their lock downs on crap. Why can't they spend that money on decent programmers to write their OS instead of wasting it on technology that will never work or solve the problem?!
- Xekonaphim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet this never happens, and if it does, anyone who buys one of these disk and a new player just so they can play it is obviously an idiot. Consumers will laugh right in their face over this.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of older title are readily available to own for 5.99-7.99. So why would I want to rent the latest crap for nearly that much when I can have something I can keep and use for a buck or two more?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony and company tried this, but it doesnt work -- simply because no one bought it.
- Heavy_C, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Waste and pollution.
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Such a freakin' waste. The US is already a big freakin' dump and we just keep adding to this. I'm no tree hugger but if you don't see a problem with the amount of trash us Americans produce then you are damn blind. This just doesn't help any and is a perfect example of why we have so much of this wasteful crap...
- diggbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... With Microsoft being behind it all I can envision is "Crash, crash, crash, restart, F1 to for setup, crash, lock, re-install, crash, re-boot, etc....."
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if you use its single-play to rip it to your computer? All you need is that one rip. Mmmm, thanks for making pirating DVD's much cheaper, BIll!
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are DVD rental places really going to buy one of these new more expensive discs for every person who wants to watch it? Or are they just going to get a few of the cheaper discs and reuse them.
Also, you'd need a REALLY slow DVD drive to not be able to rip a DVD within 12 hours. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And good people have been fighting evil for a long time and here we are.
- sfgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God I really hate these bastards. I guess I support them by using NetFlix. If they kill netflix I will never pay for a movie again just to spite them. The more they tighten the screws, the more people I know who will go out of their way just to f*** the MPAA and RIAA.
- Wyrm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Besides it's not even "new" idea, it was tried before and fell flat on it's stupidity then too. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/01/self_destructing_dvd/
- XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope they plan on giving these players way for free. I'm not spending any of my money on a single use player that is only designed to increase their profit and take away utility.
- alphadog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone has a dream. This is just another dumb as attempt to control the world. Do you really want to cut down on piracy, then sell your product at a reasonable cost to the masses.
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0phone knee
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There were some a while back that played in normal DVD players. If they could get those down to like $1 a piece it might work. It has nothing to do with piracy, but it might work. I would perfer it. I could rip it easily in 2 hours at the highest possible quality after compression and have time left to give the movie to someone else to keep. Not bad deal really. Don't have to take discs back. Plus it would be nice to be given free DVD's like that for promotional purposes. They give you a one time use one and if you like it you buy the real DVD of it.
Eric Wilson - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bill Gates is completely clueless. Why would the average consumer choose a "One Time Use" DVD rather then a "Multiple Time Use" DVD. The only possible benefit would be cheaper prices, but the movie companies would lose profits. No movie company wants to lose profits, I give it 4 minutes until this "CONCEPT" is dead.
- Doomhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*bangs head on desk*
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Useless will last life as long as DIVX did. Plus who needs coasters I already have a coaster for every single thing in my house from AOL.
- JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not "single play" if I understand it correctly.. it's more like a time delay caused by a chemical reaction. At least that's what I had read about it before.
If the disk isn't writeable, it won't know that you already played it.. then again, maybe since they are requiring a special player, maybe it is writeable in some sort of fashion. - RobotDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It will never work for movies or music.. But I bet if they started selling windows on these disks like that guy above said.. and start charging how much they relay cost to make plus a couple bucks for there profit they would end up making a lot more money, because I might just be willing to purchase windows xp for 15 bucks. And if i need to reinstall Then I will pirate it. :)
- Darek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't even think this is even a legit story, it makes no sense. Movies aren't in the Microsoft space they have no say over how fil gets protected and the MPAA is too greedy to go thru with this money loosing bad idea.
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha this is pretty goofy. it will never EVER work properly. i rarely, rarely, RARELY ever get a microsquish OS to install properly on the first cd boot. also what happens when you fdisk and reboot to check the progress. what happens when you need to run the diagnostics terminal on the cd. what happens when you buy this at the store and it screws up and you have to return it? the stores are going to flip out.
what happens if you buy it from a OEM vendor, who do you contact for a replacement cd?
i honestly think that for 95% of the population the cd key validation phone checks are enough to thwart piracy.
this is why i run apple now. and oh yes, the blockbuster all you can rent plan is SWEEEET. my old 8x NEC worked overtime wheni had that. sadly the movies that i really like i buy, because i like the box, and the scratch resistance/ longer life of a real dvd. - Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better yet: "Microsoft plans to shoot itself in the foot once again"
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't even think this is even a legit story, it makes no sense."
More than likely, this is some silly story someone made up as a joke and said "hey, watch me make it to the front page of digg".
Sadly, it worked. - slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0like we have enough garbage in our landfills, now mounds and mounds of unusuable DVD's seeping into the water table that takes millions of years to decompose.
- superrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah. and it costed technicolor around 5 bucks for each of those disposable DVD's.
- superrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha. Well i used to work for Technicolor which produces tons of DVD movies. as most of you know. They had a microsoft Department in which they made Cd's of office, windows and what not.. They also have this "secret" rom in which they make these movies that once opened they last only 24 hours because it's exposed to oxygen. They also have a room where they make one time use cd's. So i'm guessing They'll produce a big portion of Microsoft Vista...
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea but what about people who want dvd collections? no way this would work for that.
- jrsims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is going to be great for the environment!
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You need a special DVD player in order to play these discs.
What is wrong with this picture? - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$5 dollars per cd? Thats how much it costs to rent a normal DVD. This would make rentals much more expensive, and you can only watch them once. This will flop, guarantee it.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hahaha! HAHAHAHAHA!
- flipper5311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i`ve read this news somewhere long time ago.but i think this idea is so stupid+wasting time n money for new stupid tech.yeah,if there is any media, there will be piracy.hahaha
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So why not just copy it on it's first play?
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh no.
if they think this will eliminate piracy, then it makes as much sense as saying windows xp is the best operating system ever! - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no one is willing to buy those players. m$ is just wasting our patronages of windows on useless project such as these.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nslain:
Does that matter? Who would be willing to buy a special DVD player in order to play these one-time discs in the first place? No one will buy it, so it's a non-issue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I suspect this will go the way of DivX and the self destructing DVD. Especially if the article is accurate and they require special players. Hell they may as well just have announced they were going to resurrect DivX. At least with DivX you could reuse the disc by paying to watch the movie again.
- nslain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you're going to need a special type of DVD player in order to play these discs, chances are your ripper won't be able to read the discs. Looks like all of you who thought you'd be "clever" and rip it the first time instead of watching it are up ***** creek without a paddle.
- GoatHerderEd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disney's Divx Died a quck death. This will too. The only difference is that Divx played on normal players. WTF would people buy a different player to play these? That is SO stupid.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool! When the CD self-destructs I can add it to my AOL CD coaster collection =)
