- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -9/+164yes yes yes! This is what I call MS moving along on the right track.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+46IIRC, they did this before the launch of XP too. Didn't exactly work out to well for them if you ask me...
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41A couple of Xbox 360's should do the trick.
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34What hacker wants to click "YES" 12 times to install a worm?
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30At least they're doing something about it and not suing bloggers.
- dylanrjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Did you just say "delicious of grandeiur"?
- codykrainock, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34Agreed. This is the smartest move Microsoft has made in a while.
- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30its about time Microsoft started taking steps like this. I think that they will find that they and their users much prefer having the OS hacked and exploits found before Vista is officially released. Or maybe Windows user like being infected with viruses and turned into spam bots.
- omglazers, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Wouldn't the hackers rather wait till the thing is actually distrobuted? I know that if I was l337 haxx0r who caused billions in damage (aka Kevin Mitnick) I wouldn't tell a soul till it was released.
Of course i'm not a leet haxxor, nor would I do that.
Nor would I spend time finding holes FOR Microsoft unless they paid these guys some major moolah. Otherwise, whats the incentive? - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Kevin Mitnick did a lot less damage than he is generally credited for, and most of it was social engineering ;-)
But yea, if I were these hackers unless their paying me, I think ill just keep 3/5 exploits I find to myself....never know when they could come in handy.
But I assume they are hiring white hats, in which case, this is really going to be a big help for vista. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26No one cares if you choose to digg it or not. Please shut up.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27"windows is cheaper "
Are you high? - smedstadc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Hah! Windows *IS* an invitation for hackers.
- WhiteSox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24hey, buddy, last time *I* checked, FREE is actually CHEAPER than 300 bucks... but then again, what do I know, im an ubuntu zealot...
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"You need to touch it, feel it," Andrew Cushman, Microsoft's director of security outreach, said during a talk at the Black Hat computer-security conference.
hehe.. - mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22this should push the release date to around 2009
- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -12/+26@electrosoccertu:
"You" attack Microsoft machines to convince users they need more security? That's the worst jusitification for being an ***** I've ever seen.
People who aren't evil dicks don't need to rationalize the ***** things they do, because they don't do ***** things. It's pretty simple when you aren't stupid and evil. - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20What I was thinking too... and the developers will be working on it even longer!
In any case, a smart move for MS. - lunchbox170, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Good, I hope this makes Windows Vista better.
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14it'll be nice to get a pre-hacked OS with all the worms and backdoors setup ahead of time. thanks bill!
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I think the smart thing to do would be for MS to come out and say hey listen, we are offering a reward for $1000 for every unique vulnerability you find. Go nuts.
How many hackers would pass that up? i mean, find 10 in 2 hours that's 5k an hour, that's pretty damn good pay if you ask me, more then i would make exploiting the hole later, getting paid absolutely nothing unless i steal information and if i get caught get sent to jail for a few years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18This is already on the front page. SHUT UP!
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Would you happen to be talking about the same mac that lately has been doubling or tripling the amount of patches in anual security updates to that or microsofts? just curious.
- rsims17, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18@electrosoccertu
first of all stop saying we unless you have someone sitting on your lap. I'm pretty sure you don't speak for the digg users.
This is not about debugging there software. This is marketing at its greatest, the common idea for windows is that its a security ***** hole. They want to kill that idea in one bad ass move. Make a big public to do about it challenge hackers to take on vista and if they did their job right, then Microsoft proves that vista is secure. They prove it in a very big way. The question is if it holds up. I like it they are challenging all the nah sayers all the people that think vista is the same old *****. Finally making some moves, instead of just turning out an OS and saying its newer. - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Wrong, everyone knows its McAfee doing that.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13...Cushman was then asked about Microsoft's approach to testing and securing Vista.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13They are. All mac desktops ship with two button mice. All mac laptops have two finger right clicking. Logitech do make damn good mice though.
And *hardly* any problems isn't good enough. That's why more and more people are choosing macs or linux over windows pcs.
Don't you just want to click every popup and ad that you see, knowing it can't do a damn thing to your computer? - vayhey215, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17sure you could buy a mac, but why not just be intelligent? I hardly have any problems with windows. if you don't click every god damned pop up and ad in sight, you may have a chance. Digg for stepping in the right direction. So when are macs going to be distributed with more than one button. get a logitech.
- omglazers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@Snakedal
Yea, it will be. If anyone cares to do work FOR them!
Hire them and pay them. Maybe then you'll see some worthy finds.
This reminds me too much of the Dilbert Cartoon: http://sixpop.com/images/images/83267365.gif
I'm gonna go write me a new Porche! - Spizzat2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Break out the tin foil hats...
- joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I think we all know that it isn't going to hold up. Were talking about the best of black hat hackers, I'm sure these guys have already found things wrong. Think about it, a while ago when the first alpha versions of longhorn started to get into the wild, people were writing proof of concept worms. Kudos for them trying to take the extra step, but putting a solid hacker, not just a code kiddie, in front of a new OS is just asking for what we know is going to happen anyway to hit sooner.
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10prepare for thy doom--V
- pyromouse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10cheaper?? I'm with everyone else, you hit the crack-pipe a little hard.
Though granted, not all of us actually pay for Windows... heh-heh-heh
I've been offered a dollar for the purpose of installing linux on my box, so a price of -$1 is pretty hard to beat. - LabThug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@CharlesDarwin.
Yep, they did it for XP and for 2k. I don't know why zepequeno thought this was a "new tactic" for them. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1010 minutes later, the computer lay in a heap of h4xx0re3d rubble. But then, we knew it wouldn't end well.
- 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7holy ***** batman, slashdot's userbase has moved to Digg!
People STILL refer to Microsoft as M$ ? heh, thats pretty smart! You replaced the S with a dollar sign!!
I'm gonna remember that one, brilliant! :) - gosix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I think there is a lot of pride to be had by being the first to find an exploit. If one were to find and exploit and "sit on it" until distro, there is a good chance that another will also find it and claim it as theirs, instead.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@gosix
Not exactly. Real "Hackers" tend to keep any exploits and openings they find to themselves, or just release it within their "crew" (if applicable). If they keep it out of the public eye, there is a higher chance that the exploit will stay open, for longer. And that is what they want.
Just depends what the hackers intentions are. And, most of the time, it's not popularity
EDIT: @omgfazers
That cartoon rocked :-) - ctbfourone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, given enough time and resources plenty of exploits will be found. that's a given.
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8umm.. good luck with that microsoft, considering your product's track record of vulnerabilities i am sure they will rip Vista to shreads...
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ofcourse it is, but offer a reward for reporting the holes while it's still in beta, and you'll get a lot of takers on that one. which would probably lead to a much more secure OS. Everyone does realize though that if hackers would grow up and get a life we wouldn't be having these problems?
- mozzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7and next thing you know, Jason Calacanis will offer the top hackers $1,000 to jump ship to Netscape.
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is never too earlyto start hacking an OS....
- dwxdwx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9This isn't the first time they did this. They had a similiar challenge a while back when Windows 2000 server first came out. Sure it appeared fine then, but we all know how that turned out.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5its more fun to hack it after it been deployed!!
- ArcticRain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would any self respecting person donate their time to a company for nothing especially when that company will turn around a year from now and tell you that you have to pay $500+ to use the software that you helped them develop and harden? If a person wants to donate their time, it would be better spent working on an open source project that they will at least be able to use down the road. This is simply a PR stunt by M$, so that when they release Vista, they can say "9 out of 10 hackers agree that Vista is secure"
- GregR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@bebop717
Don't you think the hackers already have the Beta versions in their hot little hands? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Forget. OS X poses no threat to Windows. It is with Linux and it's derivatives that MS worries abut.
- pyromouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Like many others here I think this is a great move on Microsoft's part. They can really only benefit from it.
But the idea that hackers will keep the security holes to themselves is silly. First of all, for a hole to go unmentioned, every one who found it would have to stay silent, requiring them all to be organized for the cause. And honestly, if you found a hole and you knew no one else had found it yet, how hard would it be not to brag. - thedazman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Or... you could be really intelligent, and get a pop-up blocker, windows defender, spybot, avast or avg, and firefox, and never have any problems at all.
