- crazyjess, on 11/30/2008, -4/+16Buying only the search business is an awful awful deal. The new search business will still reside in yahoo's web properties. Yahoo will definitely neglect the m$ search advertising in favor of luring consumers to its display ads. This is like saying you are going to adopt a kid from a foster home and leaving her there.
Yahoo's strength is in its content not search. Paying 20B to for search market share just doesn't make sense. - benologist, on 12/01/2008, -0/+12Hmm. If it comes down to you vs. The Times.......
- akiratheoni, on 12/01/2008, -6/+17From what I remember, Yahoo is a huge contributor to open source. They run FreeBSD and support open source projects. If Microsoft buys them, that's all going down the drain...
- Sheepsterbaby, on 12/01/2008, -6/+17I hope this does not happen.
- sockpuppets, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7I wrote about this on my blog first mike, you just copied me.
http://www.clownpenis.fart - IFEice, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7How so?
- OBKenobi, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Steve Ballmer is a shmuck.
- billjimbob, on 12/01/2008, -7/+12So Digg hates Microsoft for being a company that has so much power, yet they want Google to dominate the internet? I guess that makes sense, if you really believe the "do no evil" thing Google says...
- idontlikeyou2, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Business is Business and the stock price has plummeted and its a perfect opportunity for MS to make a move.
- InsaneOni, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6I'm sure that you're far more versed in corporate economics than the people already working at Microsoft.
- Wrangler76, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Ballmer has "rejected" yahoo multiple times now. He always goes back to the table. He only says these things to lower investor confidence in Yahoo.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4http://digg.com/tech_news/Microsoft_NOT_in_talks_w ...
- future15tbd, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4And Ballmer would NEVER go back on his adamant statement if the price were right (or driven down by his public pronouncements).
- jayhawk, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4well, i like the free tools that Google provides (e.g., Docs, Calendar, search, translate, Notebook, and many more). i also use Microsoft Office, but it costs a pretty penny. if i had to choose to back the company that charges me bunches versus a company that gives me products for free then i am not sure i see how you're finding fault with the consumers choosing the more consumer friendly company.
- DigitAl56K, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2"Come on"
- shack95, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Well there goes Zimbra....
- tommyny04, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2the KEY word here is SEARCH. MS is not going after the whole of Yahoo, just its search enterprise.
- JasonHaley, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3Your right, how dare she give her input on an internet forum.
- radiofrequency, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Carl Icahn is getting desperate and trying desperately to pump up his Yahoo! investment: down 60% already.
- sonicEd, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Did you read the article?
- Darkspam004, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1It is funny how many comments are buried on this. In America, we understand that the free market economy works best when there are only one or two companies. I see no problem with us moving toward this goal.
- tusseyd, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Yahoo is in trouble and to survive they should outsource search and ads to Google (if the Dept of Labor overlords would allow them). Many sites do this such as...Digg. Then Yahoo can focus on content networks and applications -- areas where Google does not dominate, and Yahoo has excellent strengths. Yahoo is still a great web property, and has many excellent products. They're just not competing well in Search and Ads (also known as money).
This isn't about Microsoft. It's about what does Yahoo have to do to survive. Abandoning Search is a good step, but I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine any kind of marriage between Yahoo and M/S lasting. Total culture and technology clash. - directrix13, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Your assertion is true.
- ErhanBd, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I hope this happens.
The two becoming one means I'll have one less company to ignore... - ried, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Correct. Here's the full article she published about it:

- frieddonuts, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I personally am torn between the idea that Google needs a true competitor, and the idea of further consolidation in the internet space. Both are kind of scary and there are losses on either side.

- obchunky1, on 12/01/2008, -1/+2Microsoft can't solve their internet revenue problems just by buying up Yahoo. They're going to need innovation
- rda1441, on 12/01/2008, -2/+3'please oh please, can we have the weight of a worthless yahoo around our necks? "
No wonder microsoft is floundering. - DigitalisAkujin, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1It's gonna be hilarious seeing what Microsoft does with Flickr which is probably Yahoo's most significant Web 2.0 property.
- panda6517, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1First Google invaded and took over the hits for both Microsoft and Yahoo search engines. After this devastating blow, the generals from both Microsoft and Yahoo formed an alliance to stop the deadly onset of Google's empire, with hope that the combined power of both of these companies can defeat the omnipresent forces of Google. However, unbeknown to the unfortunate alliance, Google has been secretly building a death star that will not only destroy the offices of both Yahoo and Microsoft, but also any hope for their relevance in the future of technology. True story.
- Carlix, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Digg earns revenue from Microsoft by advertising, I really doubt Digg hates Microsoft, if you don't believe me scroll down and look where it says "Advertise on DIGG"
Taking you to Microsoft Adcenter Beta a tool that is currently available to certain exclusive publishers that will become a competition to Google Adsense in near future. - DigitalisAkujin, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Nice story but I'd prefer if they did. Microsoft invented AJAX after all.
Yahoo today is more of a collection of various business strategies in computers. They have a business for a bunch of various things and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't see them as setting any standard though. - astutissimo, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Microsoft = Evil Empire, why do I think so? Just recent events.
Microsoft has been found guilty in the courts in United States and European Union of sneaky monopolistic practices. Death of Netscape is directly attributed to illegal actions of Microsoft. Microsoft was almost successful in killing off Java with their sneaky actions. Microsoft has been caught with their illegal anticompetitive behavior when they actively attempted to suppressed OEMs from installing Linux. All of this is well documented.
It is well known that Microsoft is an *****.

- astutissimo, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1By asserting that Microsoft is an evil empire and an ***** of company is not to assert that the people work there are necessarily evil. I'm sure many nice non-evil people work there. I find Bill Gates and his achievements admirable in most ways. I have personally known some programmers, managers, and even tech support people who worked there, including some Microsoft millionaires. Of 14 of them I knew, most of them were nice. However, 2 were clearly psychopaths. It was discussed often that the evil resided in the Marketing Department, as is usually the case in Corporate entities.
Also, about Steve Ballmer. People wonder if he's as evil as he appears to be. Yes he is. - custangro, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1yes
- IFEice, on 12/01/2008, -2/+320 billion, damn, give me a piece of that.
- Stroggoth, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0"The proposal forms the centrepiece of a complex transaction that would see Microsoft support a new management team to take control of Yahoo. But there is no intention of Microsoft tabling another takeover bid for the web giant, after its aborted $47.5 billion offer this summer. "
Doesn't sound like a purchase.. more like a shift. - custangro, on 12/01/2008, -1/+1Wow...
At my company we were thinking about switching to Zimbra...
But if Microsoft buys Yahoo...I don't think I can trust Microsoft with Zimbra...
-C - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -3/+3If I don't use Live Search, and I don't use Yahoo, why the hell would I use them combined? Who cares anyway, we all know it's destined to fail, just like every other web-based project Microsoft has ever undertaken.
- Kenny87, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0Well I'm sure that Microsoft has something up their sleeve for one of the world's most visited sites (if not the most visited). So, besides stating the obvious, Microsoft would be smart to acquire the popular, but now leaderless, Yahoo... even though such a move would confirm the average MS hater's already drab opinion of Bill Gates' computer tech behemoth.
