- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Or, we could drop the puritanical American view and just not care so much about swearing. The more taboo you make it, the more validation people have for doing it.
Censorship is counterproductive. - FEWrecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25You mean I won't have to listen to 12 year olds swearing like a sailor on XBox live anymore? I'm in. Digg+
- cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18If they can make a technology that understands 12 year olds...
- Cheeze_Head, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21*****, Piss, *****, *****, *****, ***** and *****
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14They should patent self destructing controllers when they realize it is an annoying 12 year old kid playing and pissing people off.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15This is *WORD BLOCKED* stupid. What *WORD BLOCKED* came up with this one?
- Echidna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yeah, sure, it may reach TV eventually. But what is the big deal with a 7 second delay? I mean, there's probably already a five second delay just in the transmission across the world and through all the satellites and cable companies. I'd rather have a system that guarantees no false positives than one that potentially censors the wrong words... especially for those "prestigious live telecasts such as the Oscars and Grammys"
XBox Live, however, would be a different case. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just think of it— an open society where telecasts could be shown truly live, and not on a seven-second delay. Parents could be counted on to actually parent their children, and government would realize that "protecting" children from the words they gleefully use every day is ultimately pointless.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Too many innocent words will fall victim to this... won't somebody think of the *****??
- robschraer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I can see it now..... Microsoft Silencer XP Home Edition (inside the box: a role of duck tape) update to Microsoft Silencer Pro and get some string and 44 magnum, extra protection just in case those 12 year olds wont clean up their act.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm going to go play some craps, and then I will watch some Jackass.
- lukaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9will Sofa King be able to advertise?
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10OMG Ponies!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why would that not be patentable? This is NOT something that every company has been able to come up with. This is a very unique technology (if it works) and absolutely should be patentable.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'd imagine it would be related to Live rather than TV. But I can see how it would get to TV eventually.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8this would be good for blocking the racist piece of ***** ***** on Live.
- rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just think if it - a world where people don't get upset over a few "vulger" words.
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just like Americans don't have anything better to do, than complaining about Janet Jackson's titties on TV. No, this kind of censoring is not Microsoft's fault, it's the American way!
- kimwhite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7this would be great. I could watch diggnation again.
- modulo1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"If Microsoft can't keep Google honest, at least they can keep them from swearing."
This patent is a result of the classified Steve Ballmer trials. - Narpas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Echidna's got it. I would LOVE to see this as an optional filter in X-Box Live. Not so much because I don't like swearing, but because it would turn the volume down on the noisiest of players.
- Wardvark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would prefer MS to work on a filter to fix spelling and grammar. Death to CAPS!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why are Americanos so anal retentive about these things... Seriously, if you're watching the Oscars or any celebrity event where a rock star starts cursing like sailor and you're offended by it, then perhaps you are the one with "issues." Go watch your Church channel and STFU.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Censorship? It is their propoerty (Live). They have every right to say that you can't say the word "Blue" if they want.
Seriously...very few people will be on your side with this one. - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Maybe M$ will invent a device that bleeps out certain execs who curse and toss chairs across the room when informed key personnel are leaving for Google...
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why "can't" you watch it now? (Yeah, that's a leading question)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah man. I can't stand those racist spics!
- furto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i thought something like this was already out?! for shows in AUS such as Australian Idol and Rove Live but im probly wrong :P
bury if u must - Louferal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2An Xbox Live filter would be rather simple to make, if you ask me. Judging by my encounters from the people on there, all you need to do is make a continuous censor sound that blocks out all conversation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Microsoft can't keep Google honest, at least they can keep them from swearing.
I think it'll be hilarious when someone gets sued for patent infringement on this one. - aoeu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunate that one can't change their digg, I accidentally clicked the bury button :P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** Microsoft's Anti-swearing *****.
- zubi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Its not the words that are offensive.. Its our perception of the words...
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But can it block wardrobe malfunctions?
- Strangers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not all Americans. The episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry calls the gay man a ***** at a party springs to mind. As well as the obituary where aunt is replaced by *****. It's the only show I've ever heard '*****' used.
As for this blocker, have they tried using voice dialers on phones, ever? Even my phone doesn't recognise me. - Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are already products on the market available to consumers that do this.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This could be an awesome thing if it is implemented as an OPTION. Think about it, instead of being in the hands of the TV networks, it's a button on your remote. Instead of being implemented on the Live network, it's an option in your game settings. It can be integrated with the "V-Chip" on tvs... put control in the hands of PARENTS and INDIVIDUALS who may be sensitive to strong language.
Of course it probably won't be set up this way and it will be rammed down our throats instead. - dbc00per, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** That
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I imagine it still wouldn't work in unique cases, like when Colin Farrell dropped the F-bomb on SNL, his accent was so thick I had to rewind it to be sure I heard what I thought I heard.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Delay? Soooo.. they invented a time machine too?
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh that is mucking farvelous, what sumb thucker thought of that?
- grzelakc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The spokesman confirmed that real time boob detection is in the works and expected to appear in version 2.0 of the software.
- theoallardyce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AHHHHH Why don't they just put the software in TVs and let people decide if they want to turn the system on or off Aghhhhh its so ***** OBVIOUS, why the ***** would Microsoft sell this to a few TV companies when they could license it for every single TV in the country??
- Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sincerely doubt it will work right any time in the next decade. Human speech is hard enough to synthesize, let alone have a computer program understand. And the thing will only stop the uncreative people that just use "*****" and "*****" -- there are much more creative (and fun) ways to swear.
Also, the censorship argument is a pretty good one. Either they're cutting out swear words that aren't said with malicious intent, which means they're just words, or they're cutting out swear words that were said to express an opinion, which is censorship. Completely within the rights of the TV companies to do, but it doesn't mean it's right. - loftx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was something like this for subtitles which would replace swearing with acceptable words. They scrapped it when the "Dick van Dyke show" was renamed the "Jerk van gay show".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand the concept of "swearing".
How can a word in itself be bad? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully next on the list; smug self-aggrandizers.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to say was one of the most painful things I ever watched/heard was trying to see and listen to.
The Mind of "Mind of Mencia".
I was not upset by his cussing that's what you watch an act like that for.
I was upset by the bleeping. I was like a drill being driven though my skull.
You knew you knew the curse word he was going to say and as he was just about it say it.
There was that 1000KHz beep, beep, beep, beep, beep after beep.
After about 3 Min's I had to turn the show off it was giving me a headcase.
Who started this think that suddenly everything must be censored.
What you say, what you look at what you can have. Stop it already your being a pain.
If you have to use a dump button device from time to time fine.
if your going to put on "blue" content put up the warning. Then put on the show.
don't just sitting there beeping everything its stupid and it itself is offensive.
Oh ya *****, *****, *****, *****. Microsoft as usual your not helping. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TWO WORDS: ***** THAT.
