"And, IE don't even handle PNG file correctly. it's like running IE 2.0 on windows 1.0..."
...yeah, or IE 6.0 on Windows XP. - lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now I no chance of getting a virus :(
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IE has been effectively dead for 2 years now.
It was at one point (the Mac version) the most advanced browser available, even more than than the Win version. Even PNG support has been available on it since the OS9 days.
But an official announcement it a good thing. Now there is no excuse to support it in development. - timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For one this is an old story, we've known this for about a year now. Second, what Mac user uses ie? I can't remember the last time I used it on my mac. Oh and any website that requires ie isn't worth going to. It's call web usability and if these developers can't learn to design properly then they can lose my business. I'll step off my soap box.
- MurrayFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2" It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari. "
Sound advice. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. It wasn't that long ago that MacIE was the gold standard of browsers, both in terms of standards compliance and user interface.
Wait a minute... 1999? That was damn near sever years ago! I am old. - JimmySprinkles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, Safari RSS is my favorite browser.
This is just one of the many reasons MS is starting to realize that Firefox and safari are starting to better over IE. Amazing! - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One Word: "GOOD!!"
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good
- Macam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now if only they'd officially drop WMP for Mac.
- buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Camino is much better anyways.
- valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The reason I use FF over Safari can be summed up in one word: Adblock."
One word:
Google.
Safari has lots of add-ons. Including ad blocking and plug-in blocking and many more:
http://www.pimpmysafari.com/ - yourmomsbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Didn't they say this a couple of years ago?
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now what about some of those websites that require IE to use it? Perhaps the IE PLUGin will work instead?
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IE came installed on my Mac and I've never opened it once.
- femmebot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, after about 5 years of neglect, they finally make it official!
As for who this affects, the embedded browser for AOL clients is IE ... this affects millions of Mac AOL users who don't typically launch an external browser when they sign on to AOL. - TheSpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see this potentially becoming a big problem. A lot of Mac users don't follow the tech too much other then what they run into in the general news. They use IE because they've always used IE, and never really bothered to learn much more beyond making a few simple bookmarks and entering URLs. They've never really generallized their experiences from "How I use Explorer" to "How I use all web browsers".
And it's not just that the browser isn't being supported, it's that they're removing the official downloads too. - neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a the oldest news I have heard in a while... This has been reported for almost 9 months. The only news is that the time they said they would drop it is coming up.
no dig - not new. - aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No!!!! My favorite browser, killed by its own mother! Oh, the times, the mores!
IE for Mac was a truly excellent browser back in the day. It had a CSS engine like no other. It's still usable today, four years after its inception. Incredible. - lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good riddance to bad rubbish
Na na na na - na na na na - hey hey hey ..good bye! - diggity_dank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use both FF and Safari on my Mac and I much prefer Safari. I would really like all these people who are saying "why use safari?" to explain to me the fantastic thing that FF does that Safari doesn't that I am obviously missing?
- Axlrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IE crashes ALL THE TIME on the eMacs at my school.
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft seems to be phasing out IE. It's only a matter of time till they kill it off. A week latter Microsoft Live Browser will be revealed.
- MrWizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1About two months ago a Mac using friend of mine rang me up, trying to sort out his internet connection (I can't remember the details of it), but when I asked him to open up his browser and do a simple command he was unable to follow my step-by-step instructions. It turned out that he was using IE and had done ever since he switched and bought his Mac a year or so before. Familiarity is a dangerous thing. He'd never even heard of Safari.
- matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know tons of graphic designers that still use Mac IE simply because they don't know any better or can't be bothered to try something new. Sad, isn't it?
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL look at the Microsofts hyping of the "new look" and "custumizeability" for IE
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/ie/5/autodemo/c_ienewlook.htm - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank frickin god......I hope they figure out a way to send a popup through the program telling people not to use it anymore.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iCab? Its still around, and will soon equal others in css support:
http://www.icab.de/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0isn't there firefox for MAC? why use safari
- Cippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad IE is dying.
Digg. - .mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you Microsoft, I'd also like to inform you that I pretty much haven't used IE for Mac since June of 2003.
- lipinski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to occasionally use IE on my Mac for certain website that still don't recognize Safari (or Firefox for that matter). In addition to those sites my corporate email is not accessible with anything other than and IE browser. I am sure that it would work if they would let it. In not for this it would not even be on my machine.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also incidently, while IE for Mac is dead, the Tasman engine lives on. It is still updated by Microsoft and is used in other applications, such as Microfot Office/Mac 2004, for rendering web pages, like in Entourage. It is also likely what is used in AIM for Mac.
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Total people who care: 5.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now if they'd just drop it for windows we'd be set.
- Gringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha...funny! Microsoft and Security in the same sentence.
- FoosYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@diggity_dank
Extensions... I just can't give up on all great tools available. Though I do use Safari quite often (mainly for it's ability to use Keychain instead of FF's password manager) Firefox is my default browser. Pretty happy with the 1.5 upgrade too. Seems quite a bit faster. - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who the ***** needed that ***** browser anyway? Firefox 0wned it a long time ago!!!
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys... this is ancient news. MSIE on the Mac hasn't seen development since 2003, and that was just a patch. MSIE 5 has been around for the Mac almost as long as it has been for Windows.
I run a help desk and, yes, there are still people who insist on using it. At this point, as soon as we hear someone mention that they're using it, we immediately point the to Safari or Firefox and then see if they are having the same problem.
It was once a good browser and well worth using, but, like all versions of IE, its time has passed. - ashiver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god. Getting rid of that piece of crap is quite welcome!
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"isn't there firefox for MAC? why use safari"
From my experience, Safari is considerably faster than Firefox and renders things more consistently. I'm not trying to start a browser war, but Safari does have an edge. As a professional web developer, I deal with IE, Firefox, Netscape and Safari and their eccentricities constantly, and Safari and Firefox are excellent. I could live with either. Netscape is so-so. IE stinks beyond all description. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh no, what will we do?! Oh right, use Firefox.
- davinci2k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IE 5.5. was a great browser, what... seven years ago?
(Netscape Navigator 4 was a real mess) This is the strongest argument to dump OS9 - It's all those OS9 users who have IE pre-installed and no other viable web browser alternative ( yeah, I know there is a working Mozilla build - but it's kinda rough around the edges)
Apple should have a campaign to help support the conversion over the abandoned OS9 user base to OSX. - EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Based on that hunk of ***** that came with Panther, I thought they had abandonned it years ago... MS still sucks!
- H_o_p_s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason I use FF over Safari can be summed up in one word: Adblock.
Safari is a great browser, but I need my extensions. IE for Mac was just a joke for the last three years... - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and femmebot: AOL 9 for the Mac is Gecko (Mozilla)-based, not based on the licensed IE code from MS. AOL 9 for Windows, however, still is, and a Mac user with an older install of AOL will have an IE-based browser.
But, when it comes to support, MS wasn't going to support that anyhow. It would be AOL's job to support it or move the customer to a new version. - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow. they act as if it isn't a piece of crap.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The thing with this move is that since IE-pages don't play nice with the Standards, so people without IE are gonna go without some services. That and sites need to hire two sets of dev teams--one for IE browser, and one for everyone else.
You can make the same case for XBOX360 and PS3 as well.
But that example is wrong because the Internet doesnt really belong to anyone. It's not a product or a service. It takes EVERYONE to make it work therefore, it belongs to everyone.
With Microsoft's supreme power to popularize even the most inane software, how does that bode well for people that use MACs?
In fact, it's in Microsoft's interest to create an entirely different Mark-up language. Something proprietary and will never be able to display properly on other browsers. Especially now, with Apple and Google both invading and pillaging around Microsoft's market.
My guess is that the talks with Apple have officially gone sour. Like any good country, Apple is gonna need more allies. Apple/Google joint venture anyone? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares anyway? :)
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Media Player will no longer be supported as well. I don't know if they'll be removing the download, though. I also haven't seen any announcements, but this is what I was told by the Office technical support people (and then they refused to issue me a hotfix for a major bug in the WiMP browser plugin).
