- dodger2020, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How did they "trick" this moron? He offered the source code on his website FOR SALE. A microsoft investigator bought it. The end. They didn't cause him to "waste" two years of his life in prison. HE DID. The asshat deserves what he got. I hope he likes prison.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And MS didnt trick anyone. They had a bunch of federal patsies nail the guy.
"The company has also expressed fears that making its source code public could allow hackers to find security holes in Microsoft products -- though, so far, intruders are doing fine without the source."
ROFL - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"during which he'll be subject to electronic monitoring through special software installed on his computer"
This just in, Sony has offered up their rootkit. - Pplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From the article - "Basically, everything I do, I do ass-backwards," Genovese said in an instant-messaging interview ahead of Friday's sentencing. "I like drawing, so I spray paint. I like music, so I took some radios of kids I hated in high school. I like computers, so I hack."
Where does this guy get off saying he hacks? Are you kidding me? He downloads some freely accessible BS M$ code and tries to sell it to someone he thinks to be some idiot schlep with a couple bucks and he gets his ass handed to him. And he's now a hacker?! Put this guy down for even thinking like that, let alone saying it...
His momma "wasted" 9 months bearing this guy in her womb... - monoproject, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is another secret microsoft code http://www.in-machina.com/~reece/humor/windows.c
- neoclerodane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The writer of that article on Wired sounds like a ***** retard. As for microsoft - I don't blame them for being pissed off.
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The punishment MUST fit the crime. We've moved so far away from that consitutional amendment it makes me sick. Did he cause 5 years of problems for Microsoft? Give him a couple nights and community service, and have him pay twice what he "made" in profits.
This guy is an idiot but you've got to protect him from unlawful punishment if you want to protect yourself. Remember, you can get 10+ years (mandatory) in federal prison for copying movies onto discs and making 1000 or less a year. Put that into perspective when most rapists get probation somewhere after 6 years.
So, force a woman to experiance the most tramatic thing she could probably experiance next to dying, get less time than someone using a DVD burner. ***** this 'justice' system. ***** this guy too, but what he did/has done is nowhere near as frightening as what the justice dept does.
Remember that drug users get more time than rapists too, more time than child mollesters, more time than corperate thieves that bankroll millions illicitly (and serve what, 2 years?). Wake up. - Kyoushu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He had done other computer related crimes in the past. He was also at the time on probation on doing those things on the computer. This just brought him into courts, and then into jail because the gov found out about some new thing's he's done. The punishment would never have been so long if he hadn't done other things too.
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2he don't sound too happy on his site lol...
http://illmob.org/
"my rant is done .. i'll see you guys in 24 months , the other guys will be posting info on how to write me etc..." - wickedsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He kinda asked for it.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds harsh, but hopefully he'll learn something from this experience.
- TheRappingShoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"At the time of the source-code sale, Genovese was on probation for computer trespass and eavesdropping after breaking into some private computers and installing keystroke-logging software."
I bet you that's what landed him the 2 years in jail - breaking probation terms. If he'd had a clean record there's no way they would have sent him down for that long. - nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That guy must feel like the biggest idiot in the world.
- Dwebtron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe i didn't read it right, but if he hadn't sold it, he would be fine?
- Kyoushu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1amen....amen...
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HAHA Listen to him whine! Man, you broke the law. Now take it like a man and do the time.
- azar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0daedalus779 : that was me. dressed as a chick. asl? haha, ass.
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing like a knee jerk reaction.
he should get a ***** of community service and thats it. however the mention of him assaulting his babies mother doesnt make me feel too bad for this guy.
he has a super apathetic attitude though. type of guy who would tell a judge to eat ***** or something. - BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The punishment MUST fit the crime. - HighDecibel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$20...for a source code of an operating system that is wrought with bugs...
- SinnFeinster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pwn3d, but i'm surte a skinny geek like him will be very popular in a federal prison, I only hope microsoft sends him a bottle of champagne and a tub of KY.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stupid ass...
anyone wanna buy some linux source code ? ;) - alphanuderek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't that what Steve Jobs did to Xerox? Know your history instead of following the lemming mentality
- nathanstarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, but BGF that is also because he violated his paroll. Not only is he screwing with MS but now he is screwing with the government.
- daedalus779, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i IRC'd with this guy
- GlassUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I see nothing having to do with hacking here.
- jwade1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I enjoyed reading the comments from people who hate Microsoft because its trendy....wow
The guy in question is in need of a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads for that roller rink called life. - lawson23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Article and digg description are misleading
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060130-6075.html
Read this for in my opinion a much better showing of the event.
No digg - Metman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"They had a bunch of federal patsies nail the guy."
Ah.. too ***** bad - next time DONT BREAK THE LAW. If it was my code or my patents - I too would call out the 'patsies' to nail your lazy/get-rich-quick ass. - Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$20?.....what was this guy...homeless or something...that isn't even a tank of gas... is this even news? next there will be the guy that caught with coffee and a doughnut... Windows is a huge bloated piece of crap. but its the gaming platform so what can you do heh..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LMAO, guys read this line:
"The company has long maintained that the source code to Windows and other products are its crown jewels, and that making the code public could cause serious harm by stripping it of trade-secret status, and allowing competitors to duplicate the functionality of Microsoft software."
Now tell me that you arent rolling on the floor laughing when Microsoft uses the word "functionality". - Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"during which he'll be subject to electronic monitoring through special software installed on his computer"
Which will take about 20 seconds to stop and remove the software. - neoclerodane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol what a ***** idiot
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****, sorry for the double post. Digg is acting funny on my end lately.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Putting it on a P2P. . .ahhh. . .whatever. . .
Selling it? . . . he deserves all he's getting and more. - Slackwise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He deserves it. ***** moron.
- RatBagu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The company has also expressed fears that making its source code public could allow hackers to find security holes in Microsoft products -- though, so far, intruders are doing fine without the source."
I laughed at that one :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bet he thought he was invisible, well, ha ha
- Burgerman851, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't say I feel sorry for the guy; this does show how incredibly helpful public defenders can be...
- Memo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This guy didn't participate in the misappropriation, and probably didn't conspire with anybody to misappropriate it," said Rasch, a vice president at security company Solutionary. "Once it's posted online, it's just not secret anymore. At some point it becomes public information."
Wouldn't that apply to media too? Once an mp3 is posted online, it's just not private anymore. - volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0oh and also:
"so what have we learned about all this? not a goddamn ***** thing other than MS is a piece of ***** with the government at their
feet and the FBI are a bunch of asshats , and im about to waste 2 years of my life in prison. "
does sound pretty harsh!, but then, he was a dumb entrepreneur ! - WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Who would want to pay $20 for 400 MB of Windows source code anyhow? That said, 2 years jail and 3 years of "supervised release" still seems a bit steep to me.
- jamesburton1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ha.
- Kemo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What a flippin idiot!! That guy needs to be slapped and beat with a rubber hose!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Two Hamiltons? $40? what a moron. I think it was probably $200 so the editor is also a moron.
One ass-raping coming up. - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Idiot. . . NEVER EVER break the "selling" rule...if you can't resist, do it over ebay or something somehow so it can't ever be traced back to you...
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ding, da, de dah, ding, da, de, dah, i work at burger king, i make you sing... would you like an apple pie with that.. would you like an apple pie with that,
i bet that guy is singing that tune now ! - duder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@ezkiel
rofl indeed :P
peace,
duder - Metman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0alphanuderek - (first of HAHAHA) No that isnt what Steve Jobs did to Xerox. His people under his control purchased the 'windows' concept (patent pending at the time) from Xerox who considered it a 'dead'-concept. So yeah follow your own advice.
WarDave - No. See Above. Is that what they teach now in school? Do not bother listening or learning actual history. Take little parts of it and make up your own! Thats almost as blatantly stupid as the other comment that had me laughing today "Bin Laden would never have attacked us if GW Bush wasn't in office" (Yeah cause he was totally cool before that...)
godfall - MS being unprofessional? What? So yeah, next time a terrorist tries to buy weapons-grade plutonium I will be sure make sure the FBI does not use 'entrapment' tactics to stop them. Moron. Not only is it legal in NY, as it was done is legal in the 3 states that do not allow "entrapment". -
