Yes, because it is immediately clear that I made a mistake, I can then go to the location bar and correct it. When my original URL with typo is replaced by one for live search it is made rather difficult to do that. - ottodv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If you're entering a generic domain though (cameras.com), you're looking for content related to the term."
If I am looking for content related to a term I use a search engine. - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've never seen a cybersquatter site provide "relevant" ads though, they usually provide an ad for everything they think might increase their hits on the search engines, or they are offering to sell the domain to somebody else.
- dallasjfreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The guy who owns www.mobilephone.com is making millions of dollars a year. Even the country that owns the .cm domain name is making a good fortune (misspelling .com occurs frequently). Soon you will find domain names in a bigger market of its own like Real Estate.
- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not like MS is also trying to sell these unused domain names at inflated prices to people who want to register them. That's one HUGE element/annoyance of cybersquatting that's missing here--they're not squatting on the actual domain, just pre-empting their poor users as another retarded behavior in IE.
- zetab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You are 100% right.
I don't think the article attacks Microsoft for redirecting users, just their hypocrisy in doing this and at the same time going after "cybersquatters", who basically do the same thing... register domains and provide relevant ads on them. - dinvestr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out candy.com, cameras.com and elephant.com... all owned by domainers. And all pretty relevant to the term in question.
- breakall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cavalier Telephone, my ISP, sends me to pages on "itemnotfound.com" for domains that don't exist no matter which browser you're using. You can see an example here:
http://wwwv.itemnotfound.com/search?qo=alkjdsjaklhgfd.com - mobilekick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank god for digg, if you search for MS and cybersquatting you get a bunch of pro microsoft propaganda. How they are trying to help users experience on the web by combating cybersquatters. Hypocrisy, they should by banned from all court rooms.
- eurleif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A domain name registered by a cybersquatter can't be reregistered by someone who has a real Web site they want to put there. Microsoft's 'cybersquatting' doesn't stop anyone from registering domain names.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3So redirecting to you search pages = cybersquating.
It's getting really pathetic how far these guys are stretching their weak arguments to try and attack MS. - dinvestr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"When my original URL with typo is replaced by one for live search it is made rather difficult to do that."
I agree. That is true for typos I think. When you make a typo you want to realize you made a mistake so you can go back and enter the actual domain.
If you're entering a generic domain though (cameras.com), you're looking for content related to the term. In this case the service provided by domainers (relevant ads) is useful. - KuoA, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Would you rather have a "Server Not Found" page that leads to a dead end or "related links" that could lead you to somewhere? The article even says the PPC ads are at the top and on the right sidebar; just like almost any other search engine (try.... Google?).
Usually when people are entering in a URL, they think they know where they are going, but if it's wrong (or mispelled in the article's case), the related links will most likely lead to right place, and that's what a user wants; Not a DEAD END!
