- AkiraXXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Woo hoo! More ads! Thank God. I was worried that they were running out of ways to remind me that, as an American, it is my duty to buy stuff. I can't wait until we start showing ads on the surface of the moon.
- freakofnature, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Wow! Such negative reception for a free service. My thoughts were, "Good for MS, finally."
- kazzyD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here's another source on the same story that offers different details:
http://www.computers.net/2006/11/microsoft_relea.html - Rockarollr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Microsoft has done nothing but copy Google and Apple lately. It is nothing more than a "me too" company with second rate products now.
The powers that be at Microsoft should just rename the company "Gapple". - icecubed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Windows only?
Microsoft WIFI Advantage?
Online activation? - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Portland's been at this for some time. Its a city project, not a Microsoft project or "deal". The city issued the RFP in mid-2005; MetroFi was selected late last year, and the proof-of-concept is nearly complete. MetroFi was allowed to get advertising revenue, and that's where MSN stepped in at this late stage.
It'll be bad news for Starbucks that they can't charge for wireless anymore. Its not like we'll sit outside in the rain and surf! - jetsetter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I live downtown Portland--so this is pretty exciting. I don't really care who is serving ads--I'll probably use the pay version anyway. It will be great to stop paying $50+ a month for Comcast!
This makes wifi-capable devices like the MDA more useful and affordable. You can not pay for a 3G cellular service if you spend 90% of your time in PDX anyway. Pretty cool.
"Plans call for download speeds of 1 megabit per second, and upload speeds of 256 kilobits per second. That's considerably faster than dial-up, although slower than most cable and DSL access."

That is probably acceptable for the most part. Can I torrent? I'd need to be able to torrent. - Daunting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of "Atlus Shrugged". Pretty soon I bet there's going to be a equilization bill to keep companies from swabbing whole regions of the country in their Internets.
We might finally be able to compete with other developed countries in Internet access (in five years). Just hope they don't use a retarded, (Microsofty) way to put in those advertisements, I want to travel between WiFi zones without my laptop dieing from pop up windows.
The Adcenter thing doesn't sound too too bad. We'll see in two years I guess. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone else notice that the one place they picked to roll this out is the same city as the headquarters of the OSDL?
- BigJuiceMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+1 for waiting to see the service before you start bagging MS.
I, for one, fully support MS in doing this as it is the only way most poor folks will get broadband. - IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Remember the 7UP commercial? I want one of those lasers for Christmas.
"Who's been messing with my laser?" - freakofnature, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nah, nah. You got me completely wrong. I never said anything about trusting Microsoft. I am just like anyone else who likes free stuff. But just a bit more cautious in judging things negative too quickly.
On the side note: I'm just waiting for the actual service before giving them any other views. - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think "Goople" has a nice ring.
- Pwelborn1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought I had heard of something almost identical to this about 2 years ago. It was supposed to be in the city of Atlanta, GA. It was a collaboration between the local city government, businesses and corporations. The reason I remember it is because it was co-sponsored by the City of Atlanta and Microsoft as a Pilot.
- slanders, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0There are tons of other cities with free wifi that do not provide ads while surfing (and are not run my Microsoft). A good list can be found at http://www.openwifispots.com/guide_free_wireless_zones.aspx
- cmarticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The OSDL is in Beaverton a Portland suburb and not covered under the free WiFI project. There is nothing wrong with this as the city had proposed to put the WiFI in itself and pay for it. Portland can't pay for schools they don't need to pay for free Wife for everyone.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I like how all Microsoft can do these days is copy Google.
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Well, I guess you're just naive. If you still trust Microsoft at this point, there's really no other word for it.
The rest of us are wondering things like what kind of ***** they're going to implement to try to needlessly make this wireless network Windows-only, or what other tricks they have up their sleeve.
Microsoft acts in their own best interest-- always. The best recent example, of course, is them screwing their "PlaysForSure" partners by making the Zune. With anything they do, any perceived or actual benefit to their partners, customers or the public at large is purely coincidental.
~Philly - bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Where are they sticking the ads? if you have to run a separate app, that will quickly get shoved off screen... and if it is on a login launch page (e.g. web page), AdBlock is your friend.
- RexMaxus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Free WiFi is not a thing to look forward to. If anyone with a WiFi card can use the internet for free then there will be no way to regulate it.
Regulation is a good thing, it is what allows us to (try to) keep spam in check. Or what would stop someone from breaking the law if the connection can't be traced back to them.
Paying for the internet is a good thing.
-Brian out - technique, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It would be great if all the advertisements on the ad-supported service were for Apple and linux-based products
- ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Riffic, thanks but I don't really give a ***** about your feeling.
- riffic, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1according to a few reviewers, the early version of this service is incompatible with vista. oh wait thats the zune.
I have a feeling this will probably be doomed from the start as well
