- Domza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43You know, Apple charges for support after 60 days, i'm just throwing that one out there.
*watches the digg downs* - thejoestory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Why call Microsoft when I can let geek squad format my hard drive for only $280? That'll fix it.
- towca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27well, I just read the Economist, and it had nothing on sandwich prices increasing in India.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -16/+37Seriously, stop with the "M$" crap.
It is MS or Microsoft. They want to earn money. - kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14*cough* apple charges $2 for a firmware update *cough*
man I wish Microsoft had its own category on digg - stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13So true.
Who actually calls them for support anyway? - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But all support requests for the first 3 months after purchase are free anyway, which should include all the 'can't get new product working' calls.
- Domza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ stephenwq
zomg. there are other people besides techies using computers? no way..?? - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Agree with foolfromhell: enough with the "M$ SUX" rubbish.
For those who didn't read the article, in comparison to Apple: MS's price is going from 30% cheaper than Apple to 20% more expensive. The price given in per incident after 90 days (both companies give 90 days of free support after purchase). MS also gives free support for security and virus related issues even after 90 days (though obviously Apple could counter that there isn't much need for them to do the equivalent).
Domza: As I said, according to the article, both Apple and MS charge for support after 90 days. Of course, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the article. - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Apple's pricing model for support is pretty much identical (20% difference on something you almost certainly won't use anyway isn't really much to switch platforms over).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you know Starbucks raised there latte twenty five cents also.
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I wish I was the genius bill gates is. Make a operating system with many flaws and charge them an arm and a leg. Then, charge them AGAIN when they want their problems solved! So, the more that doesn't work, the more money Microsoft makes. Capitalism kicks ass!
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or you can call your son and ask him why everything you type is in upper case at 7am Saturday morning.
It's caps lock mom...
That's free too! - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is completely news to me. I've called Microsoft exactly twice for support. Both times I had the best, most helpful techs of any I've talked to. They never even asked when I bought the product, Windows XP in my case. I don't know what they charge for, but it surely isn't customer support.
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Domza: Straight from the source, the Apple support site:
"Apple software and other hardware products come with unlimited complimentary support incidents during the first 90 days of product ownership."
It says the same thing (90 days) on the page's Australian equivalent (http://www.apple.com/au/support/complimentary/). - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You paid $500 for XP Pro? US or Canadian?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@deltabourne, he is practicing "moronic wishful thinking".
@excalpius: yeah, maybe in a century Apple marketshare can grow to a whooping 5%... - Niz1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Correct me if im wrong but my logic says that an increase in support prices means a decrease in the number of people with problems? so the price increase balances out the price to problems ratio.
- albertross, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4One advantage that Mac users have, if they happen to live near an AppleShop, is that they can get help at the Genius Bar. You only pay if it has to go in for repair.
- YourEGO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm guessing that's because Vista and 2007 Office are so unbelievably secure and bug free. Makes support of those products a real bitch.
- motters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another reason for IT managers to think about migrating to linux.
- de46le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cawpin:
With Windows XP there's no 90 day free support, though there are two free support incidents per PID.
Who calls MS Support? Anyone from a student struggling getting Flight Sim X to work (That game has insane amounts of problems when it comes to installation) to people who accidentally deleted all their email to that nice 85 year old woman who wants to save her giant collection of pictures of doll clothes. - Domza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well when I bought my iMac, the Australian policy was 60 days. That might have changed. Or atleast i assumed it was 60 days.
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ytf do you, apple fanboys, ***** ms every time there is (or isn't) a chance? It's corp just as apple or google. all corps exist to make money, they are not non-profit organization or charities. Of course there are things that are wrong with ms; of course there are some ***** at upper management. This is true for any (large) corporation, including your beloved Apple/Google combo. Do you even think when you start ***** ms-related stuff?
Personally, I don't like Apple much. Mostly, because they lock you to their hardware and upgrade choices are quite limited (and usually much more costly). Btw, since we are on a ***** spree: how do you like that you cannot return macmini if you chose custom configuration? All their models come with 512MB of RAM. I would go with at least 1GB, so my choices are: get a macmini w/ 1GB with no way to return it or upgrade it myself (this is not really an option b/c it's impossible to open this thing). Why don't they offer standard config with 1GB of RAM? Maybe b/c they know that people would choose this upgrade option anyway, and then won't be able to return it... - V1be, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5GOOG is really, really good at concealing their contact info from the public.
- PuffyC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Microsoft makes no profit on tech support. Actually most companies don't. It's a cost that is just budgeted for as a part of doing business. Be glad you don't have to pay what it would cost for them to actually make money doing end-user support.
- dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It makes sense to coincide an increase in support prices with a new product release, when demand for support is expected to surge. If you're going to be swamped with requests, you might as well charge what you can get.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -5/+6Microsoft has an OS monopoly. It is NOT due to their "popularity", but due to a number of market forces, some legal, and some illegal. Both of these statements have been proven in a court of law.
People ARE moving away from Windows, slowly, but surely towards the Mac OS. It may not have made a dent in the Microsoft bottom line, but it has made a different in the PERCEPTION of Microsoft.
So, you want to point out the inaccuracies or contradictions? Or are you just going to continue to rant like a very defensive fanboy? - lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$59 to talk to tech support one time?
Who pays that? - Freddfx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3MS tech support sucks but you never used them...
am i missing the logic? - de46le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1semw:
Meh, from my personal experience - which is extensive - Office 2007 and Vista are the only products that are getting the 90 day deal. FSX I know for sure is 2 incidents.
Though there is unlimited PID-less support in some scenarios, like installing/uninstalling IE7 and such. - SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1de46le: You get unlimited free support for Flight Simulator X. I think, anyway: the Microsoft site is a little ambiguous:
"No-charge support: Unlimited support requests
Charge support: $35.00 US per request after all no-charge support is used up."
(from http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&c1=510&prid=10447&gprid=455730)
So, you only get infinity free support requests; the infinity+1th costs $35! Riiiiight... - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Microsoft has tech support??
- dinosthegreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bill Gates=businessman++ .....
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Domza: Yes, but considering how many free ways there are of getting consumer level support thanks to the internet (any question a beginner would have has likely been answered many, many times over), probably the only people who really use this service are small business IT departments with highly specific issues. (Disclaimer: I don't have a source on this, I'm just guessing).
- SEMW, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"Welcome to 2007"? Welcome To The Social -- The Wow Starts Now!
/ Damnit, can't remember the tagline for Office 2007... - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I don't get why people would even put up with prices like that. All they'd have to do is find a computer that works and google the error or something. I mean how difficult is it to install a driver or fix a registry error or something. Its rediculous the fools we have in this society.
- n3sky, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1err microsoft knowledgebase.. not technet
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Yes MS is greedy but MS's tech support sucks anyway so who uses it I never had to use them.
Heck I bet half the posters here likely have both craptivation and WGA disabled so that too is not an issue.
Also if it doesn't even boot you can allways boot knoppix off a CD find the answer on google then fix it yourself. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Oops, wrong reply...
- djames82, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1"Hi...Microsoft tech support? yes-I was wondering if you could tell me what antivirus works on VIsta since OneCare doesn't work no mo"
- n3sky, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Who cares? If you aren't smart enough to use technet or google to research your problem then you deserve to pay.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2
You'd think a company with an unpopular monopoly MIGHT try to practice some self-discipline in order to keep their profile low and keep their remaining customers from moving away.
Bill Gates is next in line after George W. Bush and the oil companies. The payback is coming. Both come out of a corporate culture that is used to deceiving and having control of the media. They have lost that control and the world is starting to learn the truth about these "crusaders" and "philanthropists". - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3It's not really a surprise. They're still trying to flog off a 6-year-old system for close to $500 (XP Professional). I'd rather have 5 licenses of OS 10.4 for $299 and spend the other $201 on beer for me and 4 mates. They could give me XP Pro and $500 and I'd still think about it because at my current contract rate that $500 would only account for the install time, let alone all the time and money I'd have to spend securing the worlds most notorious flimsy, insecure system before I could do anything with it with anything close to peace of mind.
They probably have to up the cost of support because their software is so crap they have to field so much more support calls, so the end user ends up having to pay for Microsoft's mistakes. ***** that and the horse it road in on. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Ignite The Microsoft Roast

GET BILL!!
-Sebastian - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5
Seriously, stop with the "M$" crap.
It is MS or Microsoft. They want to earn money.
All companies want to earn money. Not all companies ***** over their customers for it. MS could afford to make tech support free, or low cost, rather than try to squeeze every last penny out of people.
Then there's the way MS treats the rest of the industry. This is why MS gets no respect.
Sorry, I meant M$. - Layne, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Having to pay that much to call tech support just encourages them to make a crappy product.
- Fascist, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4They're making it overly complicated for the customers.
Therefore, they make money on the tech support. :) - mcscooter, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Microsoft is on the way down. Given the size of the company, it will take several years for it to happen but it will. The moment a developer starts writing pro software for linux and it is accepted it will happen.
- ezheld, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Boo Microsoft!! I am actually now thinking of switching to OS X or Unix
