- MichaelDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Frankly I think Mike is blowing it a bit out of proportion, a one line edit with references does NOT vandalism make. Here, check out the wiki page, does this look vandalized? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=TechCrunch&oldid=102911654
Biased? Maybe, that was the guy's point. Vandalized? No. Even then someone added Mike's defense shortly there after before the links were removed because of non-neutral POV. In this case the wikipedia system worked. - richstyles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Mike Arrington isn't a stranger to "bending facts" either:
http://digg.com/tech_news/An_Open_Letter_to_Michael_Arrington - SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Just saying one employee (who doesn't reflect the whole company) ruined their image is pretty lame and childish...
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27"So it's alright that the OOXML article is full of disinformation yet you can't take it when your site's wikipedia page has errors? Why don't you just change it? Oh, that's right, it's wrong to correct factual errors in your own wikipedia page. The guy is right and you know it."
Anyone who diggs 7of7 down is a pathetic tool. Stop fanboying and read what he's saying; he happens to have a point. Companies can't even edit their own wikipedia pages anymore because some random ***** is going to come out of nowhere and claim that they're filling it with bias. Perhaps they are filling it with bias, but if that's the case, then other people can fix it. However, companies have the inherent right to fix factual errors in wiki articles about themselves or their products and you guys all understand that. The fact that Microsoft had to resort to hiring an outside company to do it shows just how bad this attitude has become. If you guys are all so concerned about bias, go remove the bias. Don't cry a river just because they are able to edit their own wiki pages. - Thater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19What a bunch of crybaby nerds.
- abdim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18what is this pussy whinging about? who actually cares
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17and of course, a few antimicrosoft bastards proceed to digg me down. I'm not taking sides, I'm stating a point and defending anyone with a wiki page.devoted to them. If any of you guys owned a company (even a small one) and dealt with misinformation on wikipedia, you'd get my point.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -29/+38So it's alright that the OOXML article is full of disinformation yet you can't take it when your site's wikipedia page has errors? Why don't you just change it? Oh, that's right, it's wrong to correct factual errors in your own wikipedia page. The guy is right and you know it.
http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/PermaLink.aspx?guid=0c22a95a-2d81-4f40-bbce-c763d8447468 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i checked the page history and as far as i can see there is nothing that would count as vandalisation on that page since around december (earliest edit i checked)
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I was going to say the same thing. I wasn't aware singular employees were all PR reps now. Silly me!
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i just want to know how digg feels about this blog jacking their comment thums up/down icons. stealing an idea is one thing, blatantly stealing the same damn icons is another. pathetic.
- geekoid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Uh... Learn to speak like real people then come back and make a comment.
- jazbek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So after everything that this guys is complaining about, it's OK for him to steal digg's digg/undigg comment graphics?
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, he hardly vandalized the page. I don't see any non-factual information there. Arrington's just pissed off. The Digg headline for this story is nice and biased too.
- MichaelDotNet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You could argue that Mike is squashing Dare's freedom of speech rights. Dare posted a line /with references/ on the wikipedia entry. He didn't post "Mike is an idiot." He posted a legitimate concern. I for one enjoy Techcrunch, but this really is blowing it out of proportion. Call me when MS uses the DMCA to get a post removed, or sends Mike's ISP a C&D.
- bertram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6but he does 'up' then 'down', whereas Digg does 'down' then 'up' ! clearly different instead of just blatantly ripping off Digg!
///sacrasm? you bet! - a7an, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Dare Obasanjo "attacked" techcrunch by adding factual information to the wikipedia entry. Wow we can't let that happen now can we.
I think Dare's post was effective in making his point. How does MS go about fixing inaccurrate or incomplete information about their technology on wikipedia without being able to directly modify it? Mike A. suggested MS should write a whitepaper about it and wait for the wikipedia entries to be fixed by strangers which is pretty unrealistic. To make an example, Dare modified techcrunch's wikipedia entry to include accurate info that places techcrunch in a bad light to see how he would deal with it. However, once the tables were turned against Mike, he blew it out of proportion and cried a river. QQ - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, be sure to check the comments at the end of the post on the blog!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Just because he works at Microsoft does not mean he speaks for Microsoft. If your respect for Microsoft dips because of this, you're an idiot.
- jblanch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I dont see how microsoft should lose respect, if he did something wrong then the company will take care of it. The guy is only pulling the "i lost my respect for MS" card because he wants them to take ANOTHER hit on top of anything they're going to get. What REAL importance is it that somebody wrote something on your Wiki entry? Dont you realize that any shmoe could do this and there would be no-where near the same reaction? Don't preach about "being mature" and "adult thing to do" over something thats not even an issue.
- madjo, on 10/12/2007, -19/+23Is that really the way to act as a representative of a large corporation? To alter someone else's Wikipedia page?
If I somehow publish incorrect info about actions of your company, how is it then your right to spraypaint "MadJo is a crazy nutcase" on the wall of the city-library?
Instead you should take it up with me directly, and tell me that I'm wrong, that I've written incorrect info. That's the adult way of doing things (even online).
You don't go around and vandalize other people's property just because they've wronged you. That's just juvenile behaviour, and you know that too!
And that is what Michael Arrington is saying here.
Vandalism in real life is punishable by law. So you shouldn't do that online either. - bertram, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6just another chance to spam Digg with one of the 'crunch' sites. boo-farkin-hoo
- WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Two crybabies overreacting.
- Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'll be the first to ask, who the ***** are you man? Just another ***** with a blog bashing others? Oh, just trying to make a name for yourself and get your 15 minutes of fame. Well contratu-*****-lations. Your whiney bitchness made it to the front page of digg. Luckily I never heard of you before, and now I know never to read your worthless ***** again.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"My respect for Microsoft just took a very, very deep hit"
Funny, my respect for crunchnotes, which I did not know about before, is now very low. He's crying because someone edited his wikipedia entry.
"No “Roy”, I don’t think I over reacted and I don’t think I’m being a drama queen. I think a representative of Microsoft just vandalized the techcrunch wikipedia page in response to an article I wrote about them and I’m pissed off."
"Dare, it isn’t what you wrote, but WHY you wrote it."
Jesus, someone get this guy laid. - HoosbinPharteen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was going to say the same exact thing, thanks for saying it for me.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree that his personal opinions, when stated, shouldn't be taken as MS policy. But the whole "let MS employees blog" thing espoused by Robert Scoble etc. was in part to put a face to the corporation, and to make people realize that MS employees were the real Microsoft, not just Ballmer and Gates. They can't have it both ways-you are either part of the face of MS or you aren't. You may not be speaking company policy, but if you are defending the company in what they did, and you work there, then yeah, you are considered part of Microsoft, and proud of the fact.
- heavensblade23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this was more an attempt to illustrate a point than to be venomous, but in any case it was a bad idea.
- LurkerSteve2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dare wrote RSSBandit, one of the best standalone RSS readers I've used. I think it's unfair to label him in this way.
Of course, that won't stop this article from being Dugg just because people scanned the topic header and saw "oh, it's anti-Microsoft, CLICK"! - memetomancer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A coupla things to illuminate the nature of this silly drama:
1. Dare is the son of non other than The President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo and a recognized, self-made expert in esoteric data formats/manipulation techniques. He formerly kept us amused with his intense yet undeniably intelligent participation over at Kuro5hin.org. Always well mannered and insightful... it was always a pleasure to interact with him until he wandered off to some esoteric bloggish subculture concerned with his exact area of expertise.
2. Michael Arrington is a self-professed "serial entrepreneur" hell bent on capturing some of the yellow muck rake ethos from the slashdot business model, shamelessly self publicizing with techniques such as "rope-a-dope an actual expert" and "make me a mountain out of a molehill for fun and profit".
The fun thing here is to watch for how much mileage the windbag gets out of the fickle digg mindshare, and how much further an actual decent sort like Dare has to seclude himself as a result. - necrokosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lolz...funny to watch 2 nut jobs flaming each other....reminds me of the time in school when my friend(not anymore :)) cried to the teacher cuz I scribbled in his notebook.... c'mon Mike, face it like a man....
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, I read Dare's blog occasionally; he's definitely protective of Microsoft's moves in general, but usually in a pretty steady manner.. but-he's totally lost perspective on this one.
- whackjob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4we all just need to face the bloody music - Michael Arrington's a wanker.
And that's that. a sorry conflicted wanker with a bulldozer for a brain. poor loser. - Wang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just want to point out one thing. Regardless of whether he is an ass or not, Microsoft has over 70,000 employees worldwide. Don't be cliche and blame the company, one person out of the 70,000 was bound to be an ass.
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I flagged it as inaccurate because the intention behind the Wiki edit wasn't actually to insult / attack TechCrunch. I'm not saying that the example was in good form, but it wasn't an attack.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Removed from the front page. Thank God.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3For crying out loud, do no Americans understand their 'freedom of speech' rights? I'm not even American, yet I do. Your freedom of speech protects you from being silenced by your government or public bodies. You have NO right to ANY speech on a private website, in a private building, etc. etc. Learn where your rights start and end and what they apply to, and stop crying 'freerdom of speach!!1' whenever someone gets told to shut up.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a better record than Google, where 99% of the company are asses.
It's about even with Apple. Unfortunately their ass just happens to be the top ass. - SirGrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2KeekDaSneek is the best thing to ever happen to Digg.
Stop digging him down, spread the love. Yo. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They're doing the same thing here on Digg too. Some Diggers still refuse to believe that. Or they think they're getting back at the Apple and Linux fanboys by Digging any anti-MS comment down without even responding to it. It just stifles the debate, and that's precisely what MS wants.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3These ignominious Microsoft vandals must be stopped!
- amihuman1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yes all publicity is good publicity for wikipedia too during this time I guess, the stock is up 15% http://www.trendio.com/word.php?wordid=2315&language=en so it shows there is some buzz going on around it
- richstyles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think it all goes to show that any publicity is goood publicity.... if you're a blogger.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -13/+12piss. my turn. piss. your turn.
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4What amused me the most wasn't the drama but the comments on Mike's blog. Some interesting notes:
1. There are a *lot* of people defending Microsoft's squashing of Mike's freedom of speech rights
2. The Microsofties repeatedly call their side of the story "facts" - a continuation of their "get the facts" campaign no doubt
3. There is a huge dig at the open source community by the Microsofties
I can see where Mike is coming from - he makes a few comments on a controversial issue and these Microsofties all collapse on him like a tonne of bricks because they're trying to suppress any open debate or discussion on the issue.
Oh, and of course, the most hilarious part I thought was stringing together the words "My respect for Microsoft" - do people other than shareholders and gift recipients (shills) actually have such a thing? - matrixlinkin03, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Ohh Microsoft...what are we going to do with you this time
- rubberpants, on 10/12/2007, -18/+11"Is that really the way to act as a representative of a large corporation?"
You do realize he works for Microsoft, right? - wesamel, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4What respect for Microsoft?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Well, I guess even the "pro-Microsoft bastards" have to win sometime. See you next time.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1
and of course, a few antimicrosoft bastards proceed to digg me down.
Antimicrosoft bastards? That's like me saying that pro-microsoft bastards Dugg my comment down. Maybe some people just don't agree. Or do you agree that pro-MS fanboys exist? -
