- Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+82Apparently Mr. Wiseman doesn't believe in karma.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Same color scheme and a basic layout that is similar.
But the layout is generic to begin with.
Now if MS's design was very unique and somebody "stole" it, that might be a little more appropriate to complain. - weezer1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Kind of like Microsoft's http://www.live.com ?
Let me see, where have I seen a barebones search page that offers web, image, and new searching.... damn, I can't recall... - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27It's not even close. Yeah, they used the same colors... that's not stealing though buddy.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I guess this guy was looking for viral public sympathy, but the comments on the blog speak pretty accurately about how the general public feels about this post.
So what, they are using a similar color scheme to MS's. Does MS now hold a monopoly on colors and web interface design too. - womber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19If that is similar, I should be mad at Brad Pitt for looking like me.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Oh the irony.
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I just think there is a certain amount of irony considering that Microsoft is crying about someone stealing/adapting something from them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -30/+43All you knuckleheads talking about the pot calling the kettle black and all that *****, you're kind of missing the point...
The fact is, a lot of countries with under-developed technology and design industries do this on a routine basis, and it's quite a problem. Microsoft is not the only victim of this. For instance, the official web site for the Turkish Daily News copied their design entirely from CNN.com (before CNN had their recent redesign). You can see that website here:
http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/index.php
Essentially, the problem is that many professional designers in these countries are thieving scum, and there are apparently no repercussions for doing this if even large corporations employ these numskulls and pay them big bucks. You may laugh now that Microsoft is involved, but let's see you laugh when some poor guy submits something to Digg talking about how HE got ripped off by someone who made hundreds of thousands of dollars off his website design in a foreign country that has little respect for copyrights and common decency. - PanteroBlanco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Goodness, Apple fans are going to laugh their asses off at this one.
I can't tell how valid the complaint is, because the image in the article is incredibly fuzzy. The layout doesn't look all that similiar, though, other than the bar at the top and the fact that it's predominantly light blue. - crapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13to quote the simpsons - "The ironing is delicious!"
- cvayala, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Hey, that page kind of reminds me of www.google.com
- hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20Cry me a river, oh kings of copying!
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8big deal, as if Microsoft never stole IP before,
if ya cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen... - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Xerox management didn't think that anything PARC was doing was worth protecting. If Apple hadn't brought those ideas to light, there's a good chance they would have just died in Palo Alto.
- PAJK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think Web designers have pushed the limit of...Web design by now. Nothing out there is truly original anymore. There's just only so much you can do, before we get VR Web. (Which is never...)
- wtfdan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Why would he even care about something like this? It's obviously not stolen. In fact, Microsoft's page looks incredibly better.
People confuse me. - alexandreracine, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Is it me or some big Apple conference showed us how Microsoft color scheme look just like some of Apple?
Poor baby. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@ilyag @angrycat
M$
EDIT: I just noticed something funny. I am using Firefox Beta2, you know, with the built in spell checker. Anyways, it works pretty well. But for some reason, the word M$ passes the spell checker. Easter egg? - KayMan2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It happens, get over it. Like Microsoft has never stole interface elements from another company ::cough::iCal,Recycle Bin::
- JashX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Garry Wiseman must not know much about the history of M$...
people who live in thieving houses shouldn't uh... throw rocks? - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Anyone find Microsoft's website a pain to navigate, and just flat out ugly? Live is an improvement, being that they are trying to mimic google. Some things never change.
- pixelfox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6THe layout isn't incredibly similar, though some of the icons are the same... otherwise it's so generic you could probably buy a theme like that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9anybody heard of the xerox palo alto research center that demonstrated their gui to steve jobs? you know, the interface that revolutionized computer use for non-technical people?
- adidax, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9It's like rraaaaaiiiinnnn.... on your wedding day.
isn't it ironic? - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Other than the PIN image, I see not much similarity between those 2.
And Microsoft probably got the same Pin image from some Graphics Library anyways. - Ascus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How could they steal the push pin graphic...omg Copyright Violation, call the MPAA, RIAA, they need to add DRM to GIFs and JPEGs so people don't copy them.
- argusbargus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Well, I think it does look stolen"
Funny, I just checked, and Microsoft's web pages are still there. Why do you think it was stolen? - sublimemtb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5really why does it matter? just as stupid as not letting people copy the aqua theme.
@burfbarnaby
you're an idiot to say japan doesn't innovate. - anonydigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Notice that on the Chinese site, the home button is OS X's Home Icon. Same with the folder icon.
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't care what others here think; personally I find it utterly amusing that M$ is crying foul over this. M$ begs, borrows, and steals nearly all of its technology from other sources. Sure, M$ may not copy something outright, but the fact that much of its technology has been inspired by other sources that existed (sometimes crushed out of existence by M$) at one time or another is evident. On that note, I don't believe there's more than a passing similarity between the two sites in question. I say M$ needs to get over it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
- MacBastard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Xerox was able to buy $1 million worth of pre-IPO Apple stock and allowed Apple engineers 3 days of access to everything in PARC for that opportunity. When Apple went public, they made $18 million off of something that Xerox upper management weren't at all interested in selling or promoting.
The folks at PARC were thankful that someone was going to use some of their ideas, and some of the PARC researchers went to work at Apple. Xerox fully knew that Apple was going to use PARC's work as inspiration for their own products.
It wasn't until much later, during the Microsoft look-and-feel suit, that a sagging Xerox and their lawyers decided that the previously chummy vibe of the Valley wasn't gonna cut it anymore. They decided to hitch a ride on the Apple vs. Microsoft battle for sheer PR value, since no one was interested in Xerox anymore. They're lawyers - it's their frickin' job to know when the statute of limitations is up on a potential lawsuit. They knew that they were going to get dismissed; Xerox just wanted to see their name in the news again. - MacBastard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Because Apple didn't "steal" any ideas - Xerox made a flaming metric @ss-load of cash after Apple went public. Apple traded stock options for a peek under the kimono.
- bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn, it would have been a lot less trouble to simply use the Ubuntu logo...
Microsoft are acting as if they NEVER copied ANYTHING that wasn't theirs. - Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah what goes around comes around Microsoft!
http://digg.com/linux_unix/MSN_steals_Ubuntu_logo - trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6But they are both ugly...
- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Boo frickin' whooo!
LAME! - pstreck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it really stealing? I mean isn't more like borrowing. Apple borrowed some concepts from Xerox, Microsoft borrowed some concepts from Apple, The GiMP borrowed some concepts from Photoshop.. its how we improve on things... ***** lawyers screw it all up
- polyfrolic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Serious IRONY here! Considering not one part of Windows UI was original until XP (and then only a couple of new parts) it is laugable they are claiming foul now.
They have actually been going as far as breaching patents ikn some cases. Like the scroll bar with the resizing handle. That patent always belonged to Commodore. The "Start Bar" always belonged to BBC Micro.
Of course they copied the whole WIMP system.
Not an original bone in any of their combined bodies. - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Where is all the hate coming from?"
People who are unsuccesfull in life tend to be hatefull - greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7
There are no new ideas... just people copying Apple... - Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish to copyright colours.
I wish to own land and animals. I wish to steal (but under a law I can misuse)
Maybe I should bring my open source deity back under private ownership?
http://peace.wikia.com/wiki/Cecil - MacBastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is so ironic I have a metallic taste in my mouth after hearing about it...
Snark. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"why doesn't anyone ever bring up how Apple stole ideas from Xerox??"
Others have mentioned the facts but haven't totally got it right. Apple licensed Xerox PARC's GUI technology via giving Xerox shares in Apple. At one point, Apple and Xerox almost merged back in 1984.
In comparison, Microsoft outright stole the GUI concept from both Apple AND Xerox (and Digital Research's GEM Desktop).
If you wish to go further back, Microsoft's DOS was outright theft of Digital Research's CP/M operating system.
Some things never change. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ya, it looks very generic.
About the only similarity's I can see is that both sites use blue and white. - TigerWalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3forgot to mentioned this;
icons..icons..icons...hundreds of them :-)
http://www.maxpower.ca/free-icons/2006/03/05/ - lululu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looking at the juxtaposed screens, it doesn't look similar to me at all, besides the color scheme. They don't even have a left nav, the calendar, logo header is different and the page layouts are different! I think if they change the color and swap out the stolen icons, it'd be like any other site. How many ways can you arrange sections of information in a web layout anyway?
Now this site right here: http://catholic.org, is a proper ripoff (of http://nytimes.com). - min_t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Garry...
look at live.com ....I mean google.com
If you want attention, just ask. No need to show your stupidity. - waynechng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh no! Some bastard built a car with 4 wheels too! What are we to do!
Honestly, there's only so many ways to build a website that's legible and easy for users to read. Eventually, everyone will stumble into a design that's similar to everyone else. One reason for this is the sharing of information over the Net. Once information is shared, people will reuse. It's just a fact of life. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Screw intellectual property, it just hinders development. If somebody comes up with a good design for doing something, it should be copied, not forcing poorer product designers to come up with ass-backward implementations just to keep from being sued.
