- tanxadillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The program brings back lots of memories. I was five when my parents bought their first computer. It had this program on it. Sure, the GUI sucked to anyone who was actually planning get work done with this program, but to a five year old, it was a game. From what I remember, you basically rearranged rooms, and there was a few office programs in it. Kind of an early "The Sims" you could say.
- a_penguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So that looks like the preschool edition of Windows kinda like ME.
- genconkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't Bill's wife project manager for this turd?
- nickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to love this thing, I thought it was a game. I would go around fixing up the house and adding a car in rooms they didn't belong. I never new what the actual purpose of the software was just thought it was a game.
- smoochypoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe BOB is now a helper in MS Office (the paper clip guy and his friends). I heard that a few years ago. After all, MS Research Labs paid who knows how many millions into that stupid little turd. They called it revolutionary A.I. at the time.
- ender78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember selling machines from NEC that had BOB on them. Product did not last long, anyone over 3 was unable to resist the urge to pummel the computer with a hammer after seeing the interface. The second worst product to come from Microsoft , only better by Windows ME.
- KdoggMDF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good old M$...try to make $CASH$ any way possible...
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was a little kid back when that was around, and I actually had some fun with it. It was a customizable kid-friendly UI that was almost fun in itselt. Too bad it had some major flaws. It made using a computer a bit more attractive for me.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So that's where that damn dog came from. Thought I'd seen him before.
- EdHaber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think i've seen something really similar to this on an old packard bell.
- disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I remember this program too...it was great for like a 10 year-old but obviously didn't appeal to the 18-34 crowd. I liked it though
- Bgoui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i played this thing like a game too as a little kid.
- m1k3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Download link for MSBOB http://www.winhistory.de/downloads/dateien/MSBOB.EXE
- InsaneShow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good Old Bob came with our first Gateway 2000. I used it at the time for the fun of it. However, my mother, to this day still doesn't run a computer well, and she actually misses this program. Back before we had the internet and somebody would want to write a letter or keep and address book, this program seemed to put it in a way that anyone could understand. Bob's layout was logical to my ma. It was neat, but very very niche. It was for the young and the old. Anyone between 15 and 30 that didn't fear a PC could figure out how to run one. But on the otherside, the people that are over 40 and into cutesy looking thinks, this appealed to them also.
Peace - svloco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet i love it, an actually diggable story
- capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here's a Tech TV demo of BOB with Leo
http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/features/27528/Remembering_Microsoft_Bob.html - ImmortalSoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used this when I was 9 years old on my first computer which happened to be a Gateway 2000. I had lots of fun with it beucase i had never used a computer before. Unless you were a guy 10 years or younger or a girl 15 years or younger, this program would not suit you.
- genconkeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Was not the present Mrs. Bill Gates the project manager for this....porduct?
- smash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That seems like a really great idea on paper, but the way they turned things out it just doesn't work. I was thrilled by the concept, though!
- raceoftime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha. i actually remember this on my old compupter. it was a great way for passing time...AS A NINE YEAR OLD back then.
- MLBudToo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reminds me of KidPIX on the old Machintosh computers back in the day.
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At least they were trying to address the usability of systems for people who have absolutely no computer experience. That's more than I can say about a lot of software out there. Most of it assumes you are a computer programmer.
- dementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used this all the time as a kid on a Gateway 2000 Pentium 120 MHz with a 1.2 GB hd. I loved it. I wished my bedroom looked like the postmodern bedroom. I had a room in all my friends' houses too on my block.
- Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"here's a Tech TV demo of BOB with Leo

That just opens a pop-up loop of the same page. - purezero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, I used to play with that all the time when I was a kid. I never actually used it as an interface, just as a little game to mess around in.
- lzlaxhacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i used to love this when i was a kid. it was all a game to me.
- Andir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bob came with my parents computer back in 1995...that's how old this is. I can't say I think this thread needs to continue, but it was a horrible program.
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was on my first computer of my own (not one the whole family used) back in 1995. It was an NEC with 16 whole megs of RAM and it was a BLAZINGLY fast 100 MHz Pentium! I upgraded it with a Diamond Stealth 4 meg video card and it was AWESOME! Oh, yeah... and it had this resource-hungry Bob thing on it. This was right before Windows 95 and when I get my FREE upgrade to Windows 95 in the mail, it was toast.
Not more than a year later I installed Red Hat Linux 4 and never looked back. Ahh, those were the days. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0am I the only person that thinks it's a kinda cool looking UI? I mean, if it was updated to todays standards (32 bit color, 3d acceleration), something like this could be pretty cool
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where can I download it? For real! I have to try it!
- geetee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait... so this wasn't a game? I was 10 and my friends had this "game." They never let me borrow the cd to install it at home :(
- scubasteve03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember playing with a preinstalled version of Bob on one of my school's computers. Had I known that it cost $100 retail I would have thought it was even more ridiculous.
- elfhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember BOB, I used to love it, although I was 10 at the time.
- adam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh wow, i totally forgot about this. It came with my Packard Bell 486DX. The article says it requires 8mb ram. I remember it running slow with the 4MB it came with.
- spazsquatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I've been hanging on to a MS Bob promotional t-shirt for over a decade now... I've always liked having that reminder of Microsoft's biggest failure.
There's a pick of it up at http://www.spazsquatch.com/index.php?itemid=16 - sspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the fact that even though its acting as a pretty program I have a picture of the castle with Quake, Quake II and Doom Running on it
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember this also - and again it was all about the decoration aspect, kind of like The Sims, rather than an actual useful program. I remember looking at a wall lined with BOB in a Circuit City-esque store - there must've been a hundred copies on that one wall. I remember disctinly looking up and asking my dad why they hadn't sold any, and he gave an anser along the lines of "Well, that's because it sucks."
I always did like it though - a very easy way to understand computing back then. - lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, god I remember this...
- KillerTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember using this program on my moms 120 Gateway when i was 5 or so. It was a weird product and I never used it except when i was bored.
- Gepetto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was on my old Gateway 2000 Back with Windows 95. I remember putting tons of cars in the castle room, and then going and playing Geo-Safari......Oh the memories...
- mjgiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Above comment made reminiscing about KidPix ... this app reminds me very strongly of KidDesk we had on the family Mac in 1993. See KidDesk Lite, now a freebie:
http://www.theteachersguide.com/Kiddesklite.html - feedscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In 2001 when I worked at gateway I had a customer who wanted a replacement copy of Bob.
I said excuse me, he said "he loved Bob" LOL - LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0hehe i like the little pugger at the end
