- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this really a surprise to anyone? It was just a matter of time really.
- Cannelle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sites like Windows Update don't work in Firefox due to it's ***** ActiveX support (yes, it's proprietary, but Microsoft created it so they are able to do whatever the hell they want with it).
Really it's nothing new. There are a ***** of sites that do the same thing OUT OF NECESSITY, not because they want to get rid of 10-20% of their user base. - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Come back to IE with the other 86% of the world. ;-)"
this time last year it would have been over 90%. also, just because lots of people use something doesnt necessarily mean its the best option. lots of people drive fords, lots of people watch MTV, lots of people rush out to buy the latest drug for the latest made up disease that they saw a commercial for, and lots of people still use AOL. does this mean that these are smart things to do? of course not. if you look at the world, you'll find that most people are ignorant about most subjects. they do whatever they are told to do first and usually dont even realize that there are other options. IE and AOL came with their computer, so they use it. then after 2 years when it gets jammed up with 2 years of unrestricted spyware and viruses, they toss the machine in the trash and call dell up for a new one. also, its stupid to completely remove IE from your machine. if you're running windows, you need windows updates. Keep IE for windows updates (and nothing else) and use firefox for everything else. - beezn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, I can see microsoft.com no problem
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just tried it and it works fine.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^no, it's very intentional. This is how they "break" competing software. This tactic goes back to the days of Windows 3.1 not being able to run on DRDOS due to a "glitch." It went to court and Caldera had Microsoft by the balls. They settled for $$$ Millions. That's where Caldera got all their money to take on SCO/IBM/Linux debacle.
They won't let you download crap if you're running linux either. Not that that matters. - kortiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, anybody got some examples, i can browse microsoft.com with no problem in firefox
- ekmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised they would only make certain pages inaccessible rather then making all of Microsoft.com inaccessible. Could this just be poor coding of the pages? Seems stupid to only make a few pages inaccessible, instead of most if that was your goal! Just my 2 cents.
- MacGyver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should cite some example links in that article. The MS download section works fine for me in firefox 1.0.4.
- alpha7q, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft. Pwnd.
- thumper650, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Microsoft site dowloads link also blocks Safari 2.0, but not Camino on a Mac
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good for them, then they are shooting themselve's in the foot. How are firefox users ever going to switch back, if they can't get to microsoft.com to download IE? Ha ha....***** stupid ass company.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^it is indeed possible to remove IE 100% from your system. There are a couple of programs that can do it like ie eradicator.
The problem is that it also removes "activeX', which is the root of much evil anyway. Which means you can't run some antivirus programs from Norton, houscall or watch some of the videos on Yahoo (who must have a deal with microsoft on this). No great loss really. I have been able to live quite happily without activeX suckage. - giggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not surprising...If Microsoft ain't making money or its better then they hate it.
- TheIguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty pathetic that Microsoft would bow this low in the browser war. The least they could do is "battle" with some dignity...
Iggy :) - RyanXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now all we need is for Microsoft to block HellBoy.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not being able to remove IE from your system is "The Big Lie" that Microsoft wants you to believe. Call it mind control if you will. They perjured themselves at the antitrust trial.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"good for them, then they are shooting themselve's in the foot. How are firefox users ever going to switch back, if they can't get to microsoft.com to download IE? Ha ha....***** stupid ass company."
if you go so far as to remove IE from your system, which isnt even 100% possible afaik, so much that you have to download it again (if you can even DO that), then youre a ***** idiot in the first place. - kortiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, internet explorer cant be completely removed
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Conspiracy theories abound! You FireFox guys are creeping me out... Come back to IE with the other 86% of the world. ;-)
- AmZa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep, I checked most of those sites, and the ones I checked all worked for me.
I'm running Firefox on Fedora Core 4. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have any problems in FF on Microsoft's site (and if I did, well, oh no, how horrible - no microsoft.com for me), but I remember that a while back Microsoft kept Opera from accessing MSN or something - just another chapter in Microsoft's long anti-trust case history.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^Windows update sucks crock, and is MS' way to force IE crack/s onto people. Google for the unofficial service packs which are better because the have ALL hotfixes issued by microsoft, not just the critical ones. And you can burn it to a disk and use it in the future when you need to do a re-install (which MS does not want you to do).
Yes, it's a friggin conspiracy, and yes I wish that there was a way that Microsoft could be put in the electric chair. - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They aren't blocking anything. The only problems is that some of there pages requires IE because of the Active X. The Active X plugin for Firefox is really bad.... no offense to who ever made it, but it is extremely buggy. The main thing that is bad with Microsoft is the Windows Update. To me that shouldn't be designed to work with only one browser.
If you were Microsoft, you'd do the same thing. - Branden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The main thing that is bad with Microsoft is the Windows Update. To me that shouldn't be designed to work with only one browser."
Yeah...thats why you can download the updates directly. Windows Update just needs IE. - bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works for me. every link works and i use ff.
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft would never do that, would they?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MSFT does the same with Opera, but nobody whines about it.
- PhaseDMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:cough: Maybe I should bitch when IE is blocked on some sites :cough:
- vikramkr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn. False stories again? Someone is using an outdated version of Firefox or something. This story is *****. Every single link works for me in Firefox.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^Dude, spyware, adware, hijacks, trojans are what creep me out. And they come courtesy IE. 86% of the world is a zombie army waiting to be deployed.
- FoxCore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Cannelle
You do NOT know what you are talking about when comes to technical issues. Having read most of your lame-ass digg comments it is obvious, you do NOT have a clue about ___ and stop filling digg with your nonsense. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm with stupids. This is being blown way out of proportion. I've been surfing through the Microsoft site for half an hour, and I haven't had so much as a hiccup. Sorta attests to Firefox, though, doesn't it?
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stay far, far away from microsoft.com as it is, so while it is upsetting, it doesn't effect me.
- Slavakion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>Sites like Windows Update don't work in Firefox due to it's ***** ActiveX support (yes, it's proprietary, but Microsoft created it so they are able to do whatever the hell they want with it).
Way to read the article...
I haven't seen any problems on MS yet, but the article also mentions that there seems to be less problems with 1.0.4 - WolvenSpectre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey guys, welcome to the party... Us Opera users have been dealing with this for YEARS. M$'s M.O. is muck with other browsers performance or display or say that this thing genrated with that M$ thing won't work with other browsers (even though they do). This is why Opera built in Browser ID Spoofing, both dynamic and static, to let it have access to pages that would automaticly and incorrectly block or send corrupted formatting to Opera.
Unfortunately that skews the numbers of Opera Users tracked Way Down. Oh well... que ca ra... - BangoSkank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bad dig. I use FireFox on Microsoft.com all the time. I have more problems with formatting with Digg.com on FireFox then Microsoft.com.
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if Microsoft was smart, they would make another way to download updates, and they would fix their browser... they spend too much of their money on too many unneeded things like advertizing and "Microsoft Netmeeting" and all that *****
- jcb1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"good for them, then they are shooting themselve's in the foot. How are firefox users ever going to switch back, if they can't get to microsoft.com to download IE? Ha ha....***** stupid ass company."
mGee... are you stupid? Anyone who really wants to download IE is probably using Windows... which means that they already have a version of IE which means that there really isn't a problem... For that matter, isn't this all completely irrelevant? Anyone who really needs to use any of Microsoft's websites is probably running Windows? If you can't stand to use IE for five minutes of your life, then you need to stop being such a pansy and deal. - fitzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I noticed this a couple days ago, when I was trying to download .NET 1.1. This is just wrong, but what can we do about it?
- HellBoy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0IE SUCKS I hate IE
