- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -10/+50The only people who use MSN search are the ones who don't know how to change their homepage in IE.
- synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Not to be an *****, but.. if you want your search engine to be better than Google's, make sure the first links it comes up with aren't of shops selling what you're looking for for the lowest price.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17About 6 months ago, wasn't BillG saying something like "we are going to own Google with our new MSN search"? But then the new MSN rolled out, and (at least IMHO) it's no better than the old one.
Actions speak louder than words. I'll believe that MS has a better search engine when I see it with my own eyes. - synchestric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13All generalizations are wrong ;)
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15This new comment system really has to go. Krazilogic made a good point and suggested an alternative to Google yet his comment was buried while Lukas88 just made a cliched insult inferring that people who use MSN search are too ignorant to change their homepage in IE and he has over 30 Diggs. Digg should be about the free exchange of ideas, not a forum full of people preaching to the choir. Tech is not about burying unpopular opinion and I don't think Digg should be either.
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No, it's not. Google is far superior to the depth and complexity of their search, and MSN is filled with an incredible amount of garbage. When I do searches on MSN for top contested keywords, I don't expect to find Blogspot blogs on the list. Yet with MSN... I do!
- Kazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They either decided to concentrate on other things, such as Vista or perfecting their perfect-home-takeover-gateway drug to Windows universiality, decided concentrating on searches as a source of revenue could be spent on other things, or maybe they believe Google will accidently destroy themselves.
- MrJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8www.live.com still doesn't work in opera (version 8.5), and until it does I won't even consider it. You hear me Microsoft? Start supporting multiple browsers.
- Markrosoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Seems pretty obvious to me. Vista will be about in about 6+ months (at least by the end of the year). You can bet the default IE home page will be their new search engine. I personaly won't be buying Vista, but you know its going to be huge. That's a lot of new users of MS's search engine who probably won't bother to change thier homepage.
Long way to catch up with google though. They'll be looking to do it brute force. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8MSN search is as relevant at Google at the moment, however Google's Big daddy update is much better.
I still wont use MSN though for two reasons;
1) I think they tried to do a Web 2.0 design and failed miserably although removing of the blue background for silver/grey does earn them a gold star for finally realising how awlful it was.
2) I disagree with Microsoft's business pratices in general. - havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Capturing 11% of the search market when you are the default for nearly every computer out there is an amazing failure to be sure.
- tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MSN responds: http://blogs.msdn.com/msnsearch/archive/2006/03/03/543032.aspx
This sounds like the same thing that Yahoo did a couple months ago. They admitted they were not the #1 search engine and that they were trying to catch up to Google. See http://www.topclickmarketing.com/2006/01/28/yahoo-in-it-to-win/ - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They might focus their effort more on the whole transition of their services to the live.com platform, including search capabilities such as MSN search.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Windows Vista will have a better 'desktop search' imho. Google desktop doesn't even have advance searches to trim down on results. The results show too much garbage, with no obvious way to dig deaper, or to better sort. It sucks. I'm sure I can find a command line to sort my searches, but why should I have to? I can't even sort them by create date, or by folder (for example)... these are simple, basic search tools! Use the term 'disney' on my pc, and you get 9800 results you have to dig through a frickin page at a time. useless and time consuming.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Someone needs to muzzle that billg guy. He keeps making these bold sweeping claims that have no bearing on reality. Remember his vow to eliminate spam in two years... which was over two years ago? I think he's starting to forget that Microsoft is becoming less and less relevant.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's funny to watch Microsoft unable to recognize when they aren't the number one in a given market. They don't seem to know how to deal with it.
- energeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In the desktop search category I have never used either Google Search or MSN because I'm a linux user and this may even be a bit offtopic but KDE 4 may be getting ported to Windows and they are working on a contextual search engine called Tenor. Instead of searching by keywords it will search by its relation to you and to other files. It may be a long way away but its something with a difference and potential. http://appeal.kde.org/wiki/Tenor
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bet the search will also be built in other areas of the operating system for consumer lock-in. It's already integrated into MSN messenger, with only one engine option. Who's to say they won't do the same with an integrated browser search? Even if there is an option to choose, don't think Average Joe ever strays from defaults. He wouldn't want to break his computer.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Bravo, 7of7. I've found the new comment system actually creating more work for me as I find myself displaying all the comments with negative scores just so I can Digg all the ones that were unjustly scored down. Undigg for trolling and for fanboyism, not for disagreeing with you. If someone says, "OMG, M$ IS T3H SUX0R," mod them down. If someone says, "OMG, MICROSOFT IS T3H 4W3S0M3," mod them down as well. But don't undigg someone who criticizes or praises Microsoft by way of a logical post. There are often many valid statements and opinions on both sides of an issue.
- Apethanon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Live.com barely worked in Firefox for me, soon after I tried it. In order to get it to work, they wanted me to change a crapload of security settings to install new modules..or widgets (Whatever they decided to call them). No web site should require a drastic change of settings in your browser for it to function properly.
Has it improved at all since then? - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem with the msn search is that it takes to long to go to search.msn.com instead of just google plus lots of people go to msn.com and it takes waaay to much time to load for a quick search and start takes to long compared to google so think ease of use and spediness is a big factor of why msn is failing...
- coachted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I switched from Google Adwords to Yahoo Search Ads because the cost of Google Adwords clicks for my key words doubled in last six months. I can still buy Yahoo clicks for the same keywords for only $0.10 per click. I just get one half the volume I would like.
Since MSN uses Yahoo Ads. Maybe MS Vista will significantly increase the volume of Yahoo clicks? - xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't a big deal...some moronic Microsoft Exec said something very dumb...and now his company isn't backing him up? So what?
- pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ACalcutt, I think he was referring to Desktop search. It wasn't clear, but I know that Tenor is some desktop search project. I tried to give your question a digg, but missed and gave it a thumbs down. Sorry I don't see how to change my vote.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Well, have you actually TRIED the new MSN search? I'd say that it actually IS better than the Google search.
Just.. Nobody wants to switch which search engine they're using. (Even me, I still stick with Google) - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't win the hearts and minds of people by just saying your better then google.
You have to be better than google and so far from what I've seen MSN is not.
So far all Microsoft has done is trying to copy goggles features by giving you weak versions of the same tools.
They have tried to integrate product you buy with MSN example MS Money 2005 integrates with MS passport
hotmail and MSN.
I'm sure part of there upcoming feature plan will be integration of MSN and Vista.
Googles simply a better and search and data reference. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12or they don't know how to not use IE
- redsrule2500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Digg is starting to become a mac fanboy hangout.
- kacymartin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4yeah but they gotta wait for someone to release a good product so they can rip it off, fill it with bloated useless features, and then charge an insane price for it.
- treehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TRANSLATION: "We can't make it work."
- digboy99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What was Google charging for the same words after the increase?
- gamersedge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what crap.
- Prophetik, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Too true.
- juanbobo808, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This guy/Microsoft is blowing so much ***** out of their ass I wondering when they're going to be able to stop. I digg this article for the sole reason that it made me laugh when I heard that Microsoft was making a "long-term goal" of taking down Google.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd have to say google is far more relevant then MSN. when doing a few searches you can easily see results ranked improperly. google bases ranks more on who visits the page, MSN bases it more on the word relevance to what you searched. I'd personally rather have the more popular results show up first.
- RealyBigFish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I stopped using just one search engine. Just use dogpile and it give the best results from Msn, Google, Yahoo and Ask.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1started?!?!?
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1that's so funny you say that. I actually typed "digg", but changed it in fear of digg's spell checkers and some peeps apparent lack of sense of humor. :)
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I've switch from using google and yahoo to using google and msn.....I have found things on msn search neither of those search engines could find :P
- plusque, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1thats digg deaper not dig deaper :)
- Markrosoft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Oops, I meant "Vista will be released in about 6+ months"
- ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1what does being a linux user have to do with not using google or msn?....what search engine do you use?
- alphageek101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i'm pretty sure it should have been "digg deeper", not "deaper"...
- MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6ROFL that is so true. First thing I did when I first used to use IE was change the homepage.
- digboy99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The Digg community definitely has its favorites. Google and Apple can do no wrong, while Microsoft and Intel are mostly dogs. This and the mod system of Digg discourages thoughtful and honest debate as the zealots mod disagreement down below viewing thresholds.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3i stopped listening to bill gates. hes full of *****
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9I believe the actual quote from Bill Gates was:"LOL!!!!!!1 omg newb, MS clan is going to pwn u."
- howiloved, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2i don't really care but i just won a bose sound system from www.msnsearchandwin.com so they can do whatever the hell they want with their search engine.
- mathew_bug, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3yawn
- KraziLogicz, on 10/12/2007, -28/+17Not true. Stop bashing Microsoft just because they're Microsoft.
Give www.start.com a try and see if you say the same thing.
I consider myself a smart computer user and I like the path that Microsoft is taking with the web.

What is Digg?
