- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+77ARGHH! All those times I've studied his videos trying to figure the trick out and falling flat on my face trying to do it myself!
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+65Michael's moonwalk was before TMNT or Power Rangers
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51But the culture is different. Most 'black' people have a completely different culture than most 'white' people. The same goes for asians, indians, hispanics, etc...
That said, it all depends on how you grow up. There are black people like 50 cent, and then there are black people like Wayne Brady. There are white people like Eminem, and then there are white people like Bill Gates. They're all completely different. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Interestingly I was watching this trick last week, in that video you see the little bolts in the stage sink back into the stage in the next camera shot which is unfortunately not shown in the website. This is what alerted me to how it was done. I always assumed cables had been used in the music video and then edited out, or were thin enough to not be seen (dark set anyway).
And one last thing to anybody under the age of 20, during the 80's and 90's Michael Jackson was the greatest star hands down. His dance moves still cannot be bested and he was genuinely talented unlike the tripe of this decade. - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -25/+56"Michael Jackson is black, but he acts like a white man...?"
How can you act like a white man you fool? Black skin is only caused by a different gene, it doesn't affect your mind or behaviour whatsoever. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40Little known fact: The moon-walk was not made up by Micheal Jackson. It was made up by an English dancer who call it "the back-slide". The moon-walk is a better name though.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -24/+54Michael Jackson doesn't care about black people.
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35I think OJ patented that one already
/action rimshot - BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -19/+40No it doesn't.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+32@doctornkul: Remember Black only second-class schools in America?
Black people happen to live on-average across the globe in larger deprived areas. Inside the first-world, they're discriminated against, given second rate places as civilians by the fear in your society. But I also know that your ignorance will only bite you back at some point. There's a million black people a whole lot smarter than you, drop the stupid "black sterotype" and get a clue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Another celebrity patent is even more interesting
Penn Jillette's "Jill Jett"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_Jillette
Scroll down to the patent item under "Projects" - kidblast, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I agree. A few years back, my uncle was awarded a patent for coffee tables that have a motorcycle engine as the base. Give me a break.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Slashdot phoned, they want their "called and want it back" joke returned.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Oh yeah they'll just slap on some SKIS and stomp around with those on. I totally could have thought that up.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Yeah, cause that's what I meant, they should all dance in skis...
- drigz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23In their defence, the point was how it was integrated into the stage show...
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25Anyone who skis knew this trick long ago. I wish I would have patented "attaching your feet to something to drop your centre of gravity"
- tehJR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Your uncle sounds like a fun dude.
- HumbleDialog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I guess I'm a little confused why this IS a patent -- or rather why they bothered. Were they afraid someone would steal the technology, and develop a better, cheaper Michael Jackson?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10wait a second...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZE2bQZXRs&search=Cyril
how the hell is this guy doing it on a subway train then? (about 35 seconds in) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Then digg for a good simple trick that doesn't rely on millions of dollars of CGI.
Here's to when ingunity reigned! The Stephen King film "It" was done without any CGI, and it's incredibly scary, gory and detailed compared with the so-called "horror" nowadays. - wilerson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14The eighties called, said they want their news back.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21And @ pjh3000
Then why do Asians score higher than Whites? Don't tell me that they're more white than white people! - Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Done better here and on the streets by a guy named Cyril Takayama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apIBOPFCjLw&search=Cyril%20Takayama - darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10OMFG - Dexotaku nailed it...I'd never known about that before...

Thats a video clip that he's referring to...and I'll be damned...we have a guy...dressed like Michael dressed...doing dance moves that are the same or very similar in style...AND he's talking to...wait for it...a young kid.
I wonder if you just unlocked the entire inspiration behind MJ...from his fashion, to his dancing, to his...um...fetishes. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Unfortunately, the baby tipping on the balcony still unexplained.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Look, friend, you have misinterpreted what I was saying to mean I was being overly critical of the patent. I am not. I was saying that, once revealed, the trick was nothing more than what millions of skiers have done for fun in the past. That is all. Had I been smart enough to see the potential here and patent it first, I would be rich.
The first responder was correct, the actual patent is for the specific deployment for a stage show. I understand.
Don't get your panties in a bunch and don't assume you know what I meant. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wait a minute! A 1993 patent on a lean-heel shoe? People have been using those since Vaudeville! You can see it any number of old silent movies.
-jcr - tkerwin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13While it's true that the Power Rangers phenomena was firmly in the 90s, Smooth Criminal and the TMNT cartoon both came out at the same time: 1987-88. The Flintstones and The Jetsons were both in the 60s, before Michael's first record.
- SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15its amazing what you can patent...
- ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Michael Jackson is black, but he acts like a white man...?"
No, he acts like a white woman. - kidblast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He's got lots of "ideas". Yea, he's that guy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16Why is it so hard to digg something about Michael Jackson?! The conflict within me!!!
- Kendalf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've aways wondered how this trick was done. I like the fact that I still don't see the hooks in the video. Why wasn't this revealed before?
- aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6thanks for making me spit all over my monitor... digg up...
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this guys been working on this problem since 93?
someone needs a dayjob - davidkain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Totally! I wonder if Britney Spears patented that "boobs-changing-size" trick.
http://www.anomalies-unlimited.com/Britney.html - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10"Michael Jackson is black, but he acts like a white man...?"
Michael Jackson is black!!!??? Since when? - TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg Effect.
Here's the original music video:

- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Too expensive
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3most of you are making references to films where the lean was done (except for the guy talking about the comedian) but this patent isn't for that. this is so the same move could be performed live, on stage for everyone to see. Chaplin nailed his shoes to the floor as im sure did Haley for OZ. The POINT of the patent was so that you can move freely, lock into possition, do the move and then continue on with the rest of the show.
the patent is for the pair of shoes, not for the idea...and if you're all so brilliant lets see you pull it off. Trust me, just nailing your shoes to the floor wont get you perfect results. - aximbigfan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4dude, why were you watching an nsync video?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Because it's more "old entertainment news from the early 90's" than "breaking technological news from the 21-st century".
I mean, it's kind of interesting...but shoes that lock to the ground isn't really a groundbreaking invention. - dr-steve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've seen similar "extended leaning" in Cirque du Soleil performances (on TV) from a number of years back. Were they using a similar technique? Does it predate the 1993 Jackson patent?
I wonder if there's prior art from the vaudeville era? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Exactly. Next, hopefully he'll explain the eye-popping digital effects they used to make the video for Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing".

"I was a teen back in the 80's and I still thought he sucked even back then. I never understood his appeal back then and still don't."
If you were unable to appreciate his ability to dance back then..... Wow. The man was an incredible dancer. Much talent. - SavannahLion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4About time someone mentioned this. I've known how this trick was done for years, ever since I saw a Jackson video where this is done. However, I always assumed the notch(es) were between the shoes, not in the heels.
The video used in the example is a piss poor example. It shows the guys foot getting stuck (not tripping) presumably because the post starts to drop below the stage before he has his foot off of it. There *is* a better video out there that does show the post. In it, you notice a tiny shadow just as the dancers swing around into position for the lean. As they finish the lean and the camera swings to a different position, the shadow is gone. - MrLunk, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1.
