- mogera, on 10/10/2007, -62/+252Just a quick thought, I think its fairly juvenile of Bay to say "Oh yeah! Well I''m not making Part 2!"... but the point of why he did it is clear, esentially Paramount's decision has cut into his install base. People who own Blu-ray players deserve the right to pick up the movie in the format of their "choosing". This deal screams of black-balling the consumer, forcing them to adopt a format, AND limiting their choices. All of which are BAD. Sounds just like the vitriol that Microsoft was screaming at Sony... ironic no? So I'm glad "someone" is putting up a fuss, and oddly enough its a person in the limelight. I may not like his movies, but I respect his point. Let the consumer decide what format we want to purchase HD movies on, not the studios. I'm sure his goal isn't so altruistic, and it has more to do with the bottom line, and maximizing sales, but ultimately he's right.
- WiZZLa, on 10/10/2007, -25/+197...this is coming from the same guy that re-used Pearl Harbor footage in Transformers.
There is also not much of difference between Dreamworks & Paramount deciding to now go "HD DVD only" as opposed to Sony and others being "Blu-ray only" from the beginning, at least some of those companies tried doing both. - hazard, on 10/10/2007, -18/+180"No Transformers 2 for me!"
You promise? - Anpheus, on 10/10/2007, -30/+185Dude, the two formats, except for names and some minor differences in capacity, are almost identical.
The sooner every company in the world sides with exactly one format and we move on, the better. - geoken, on 10/10/2007, -18/+141It's a movie about giant robots, who can transform, fighting each other and wrecking *****. Assuming the special effects budget is adequite, I don't think it matters who directs it, it will be awesome. I don't think he'd be missed in the slightest if he's absent from the sequel.
- ibeetle, on 10/10/2007, -8/+104New York Times: Paramount was paid off for 18 month HD DVD support.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/21/technology/21disney.html?ei=5088&en=d4e1f285e2f41437&ex=1345348800&adxnnl=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&adxnnlx=1187698143-B5wO3L/F+4r1NyAsum87vQ - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -20/+114Kind of childish. But I agree that the consumer should be able to pick the format.
- PimpMoneyRich, on 10/10/2007, -26/+99Great....now Michael Bay can't ruin Transformers twice...next thing you know he will want to re-make Pearl Harbor and replace all the guns with 2-way radios
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -26/+63"This deal screams of black-balling the consumer, forcing them to adopt a format, AND limiting their choices." - You just summed up the PS3 and Blu-Ray all in one. Clap.
- BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -6/+41You read Michael Bay's blog? Lol. You loser.
- Cwiddy, on 10/10/2007, -23/+56At least then we might get a movie that isn't complete *****.
- vandy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31hmmm....spend a cool couple million, get a ship for a 2 second shot or reuse this footage i have and add in a couple helicopters with cgi. seriously? you'd want to reshoot that?
- chay83, on 10/10/2007, -11/+40I'm sure if they gave him the right script and the right paycheck he would change his mind
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29No, it's not true. VHS beat Betamax because Sony wouldn't license the player technology to any other manufacturers. JVC sent the VHS spec to everyone who would take it.
- spillingvoid, on 10/10/2007, -11/+39Thats right and all of us with Beta Cassette players should be able to get our Favorite movies on beta max..... unfortunately usually there can be only one winner when it comes to format wars like this. Some people spend money on things that go no were(beta max, Atari jaguar and the such). and some people don't spend any money tell they know which format is going to be the winner. remember many considered the beta max the superior video cassette in both video quality and sound and VHS won because it was cheaper. power to the dollar.
- PhantomRogue, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28Its more than Minor Differences in Capacity there slick.
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/415/2
Blu-Ray is almost 2x more capacity, and has on AVERAGE a faster read rate, note the Average, HD-DVD goes from Fast to Slow, where Blu-Ray is a standard transfer rate throughout the disc.
This is sort of turning into Intel vs AMD chipsets, and it doesnt appear to be going away anytime soon. The worst thing to do is for Companies to only support one side. Its a wonder one side hasn't accused the other of offering Price Gaurantees/Fixes or some crap (like AMD accuses Intel of all the time). - fplouffe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25I guess DVD format is bad then since it has no competing format.
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -9/+32Welcome to the World of Bay. The guy's blog entries are like those of a 12 year olds.
- astrotrain, on 10/10/2007, -7/+29Michael Bay... not making Transformers 2?... what a blessing..
- Slashriffs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26Who really cares about Michael Bay?
Lets get Peter Jackson to do it. - MonsterChaOS, on 10/10/2007, -14/+35Yeah really, do don't hear many people bitching about the companies that are exclusivly blu-ray. Grow up already.
- KraftDinner101, on 10/10/2007, -14/+35And I thought I was the only guy in the world who thought Transformers was crap. Thank you!
- bossm4n, on 10/10/2007, -16/+36You're beating the guy up because he recycled 5 seconds of footage of an aircraft carrier from Pearl Harbor? If that's the worst you've got on him or Transformers you're one picky bastard.
- WNW3, on 10/10/2007, -10/+30Transformers? You mean "Bad Boys 3: With Robots", Yeah I can live without Bay further violating my childhood memories.
- vandy, on 10/10/2007, -15/+35Except this move by Paramount just set us back another couple years. We were making strides towards the Blu-Ray camp, and now they just messed it all up.
- Monty2, on 10/10/2007, -24/+42It's pretty bad when a company yanks support from a format at this early stage. Leaves customers in the dust for no real reason. Heck, they were sellnig more on BD than hddvd. Hope that quick $150m was worth it for them, cause it's going to piss a lot of people off.
- actorboy, on 10/10/2007, -10/+28Dude, they made a movie about the Transformers -- did you really expext it to be great? It was a sucky cartoon in the 80s and destined to be a sucky movie as a result. It'd be like them making a movie of Scooby Doo, which was awesome when I was little, but horrible once I became old enough to realize I needed more than moving shapes and funny voices as entertainment. Oh, wait...they made that movie too.
Scooby Doo, Transformers -- and Thundercats (for all you drooling over that thought) -- are the cartoon equivalent of mommy shaking keys in front of baby. Just because you liked it then, doesn't mean it's worth two hours and a box of popcorn now. - canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -20/+37i'd be more impressed if he would pull transformers 1 off the market and allow it to be remade so it wasn't a giant crap fest. mr. bay, my inner 80s child is pissed at you, megatron is a gun you ass.
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19You can't forget that it is still coming out on DVD!!
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Yeah, it was whiny, but no Bay on Transformers 2 is the best news I've heard all morning!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21The difference between Paramount and Sony's decisions is night and day. Sony is a member of the Blu-Ray group and as such they are supporting their investment 100%. Paramount is neither a member of the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray consortium. Paramount made their decision to drop Blu-Ray DESPITE it being the better selling format (2:1 sales ratio) and as such went AGAINST what consumers were telling the company they wanted with their wallets. So basically, this is a big screw you to people who have been buying their blu-ray movies up until this point.
- Sketchcast, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19You know what I expected from a Movie about Transformers? I expected a goddamned movie about Transformers, instead I got a generic Michael bay disaster film who's main characters were some kid and his 'badass criminal' girlfriend, some 'hackers', mission control and some old government dude, a goofy ***** from a secret government agency, and some US Army guys. Seriously, where the ***** were the transformers? I think Optimus was the chattiest of the bunch and he maybe got 4 lines in the whole goddamned films.
Also I'm sick of hearing this "Michael Bay can direct action" *****. Michael Bay has no ***** clue how to direct action, all he knows how to do is ruin action sequences by shaking the camera so violently that you can't see what the ***** is going on. Want to see some glorious action? Watch Ronin, watch Children of Men, watch anything but a Michael Bay shakey cam hackjob. - bantam, on 10/10/2007, -10/+25the world just became a better place :)
- HenvY, on 10/10/2007, -14/+28This guy sticks up for the consumer and you gun him down? I thought this was digg?
Stop the *****, realise Bay saying this is a good thing and try to forget about your stupid and childish format alleigances for one minute. - axeshredder, on 10/10/2007, -12/+26Like anyone gives a ***** Bay. You suck ass.
- Bl4deRunner, on 10/10/2007, -13/+27Michael Bay IS a kid. And a poor director, which, again, is a result of him being so infantile. The ONLY guys to deserve credit on Transformers, are the great people of "Industrial Light & Magic", who saved Bay's ass & the movie with the most awesome effects ever seen on screen. Bay. doesn't deserve a fragment of the credit people give him. As long as ILM are the once creating transformers, F#ck off, Bay.
- themuse, on 10/10/2007, -10/+24I guess this means Transformers 2 will have depth. Woot!
- Schwab, on 10/10/2007, -10/+24Come on, did you expect anything more from the man who made Armageddon? The movie was beautiful and will be beautiful in hi def no matter what format. Bay, well Bay is just a dick, maybe with a different director Transformers2 will have a story and some acting to back up the beautiful effects.
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -10/+23You guys must be in the club that expected an intellectual thriller in place of robots fighting. If you want that don't go into a movie with Transformers in the title. The movie was EXACTLY like the cartoon, a few moments of comic relief mixed in with kick ass action.
- SteelChicken, on 10/10/2007, -17/+30his opinion is valuable, considering his sucess with transformers...but acting childish "im taking my toys home" was unnecessary and devalues his opinion.
- hysonmb, on 10/10/2007, -9/+22Luckily, I never watched Pearl Harbor. What footage was reused?
I posted on Engaget, so I'm not going to post the same rant here but I'll say I don't like Bay. I didn't have high expectations for Transformers so I was surprised and happy to see that it's a good movie. I think it had more Spielberg influence than they let on. - hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Some shots of Aircraft carriers (fly-bys, pretty much) that were altered. Nothing you'd really notice.
- mikejbam, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17I agree. It was one of the few movies I've seen in the last couple years that I was glad I spent the money to see at the theater. Maybe you have to be a child of the 80's to "get it".
- hichala171, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I agree with mogera. Paramount is getting paid off to drop Blu-ray, and Bay doesn't deal with that crap. Blu-ray's installed base is larger than HD-DVD's because of the PS3, and Paramount KNOWS this because its common freakin knowledge. The movie 300 sold more than twice as many copies on Blu-ray as on HD-DVD. Why would they not have their movies on both formats? To help end the format war for the consumer at the expense of lost sales to the Blu-ray customer? Please, they're being compensated. By whom, I don't know: Toshiba, Microsoft, anyone with a vested interested in seeing HD-DVD pushed and Blu-ray dropped.
I don't care either way, as I won't be going HD for a while, but the point is that the choice is being made for the consumer, not by the consumer, and I'm glad Bay is doing this (even though, as mogera said, it may not be for such an altruistic cause) - aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12"But money talks: Paramount and DreamWorks Animation together will receive about $150 million in financial incentives for their commitment to HD DVD, according to two Viacom executives with knowledge of the deal but who asked not to be identified.
The incentives will come in a combination of cash and promotional guarantees. Toshiba, for instance, will use the release of “Shrek the Third” as part of an HD DVD marketing campaign." - Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13To be fair, that wouldn't translate well to the cinema. The main enemy being a *Pistol*.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -17/+29DEAR MICHAEL BAY: The adults are talking, here's a cookie, go back the the kiddie table. Thanks.
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Yeah because the transformer I remember from my child hot had such wonderful depth and emotional scenes. The characters dialog were only bested by shakespears best work...... it was like moving art.
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12"Microsoft, the most prominent technology company supporting HD DVDs, said it could not rule out payment"
Looks like they got bought out to me. Stop being a fanboy, zybch. - UrsaMare, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11It also helped that VHS was the first format to allow recording of up to 2 hours of content, which made it suitable for recording movies that were broadcast over the air.
