No one loses anything real from file sharing, and no one is making money from it, they are just helping others -- they are sharing, which we all are taught is a good thing. Instead, they should focus on those who actually sell pirated material, or use it for commercial purposes, because that is a much more selfish act.
There is a lot of annecdotal evidence that file sharing is positively correlated to legal music sales (although it more often is spun as sales up despite increased file sharing). If artists cut out the middleman, and stopped letting record companies beat their customers over non-commercial distribution, and instead focused on collecting income from the fans who like the music they are sharing, they would be much better off.
