- Cararan, on 03/11/2009, -5/+28Not bad... Bye Bye iPhone..
- yunus, on 03/11/2009, -0/+22Metro PCS doesn't even have good coverage, check out their own website. They are lacking any coverage at all in large parts of the country. This might be good if you only plan on using it in your home city.
- homer4199, on 03/11/2009, -2/+19Good now LOWER YOUR PRICES VERIZON!!!
- motang, on 03/10/2009, -3/+16Finally I have been bugging them to get some type of smart phones!
- mg101153, on 03/11/2009, -0/+13metroPCS does not have contracts, its a pay as you go service.
- Topher06, on 03/11/2009, -1/+10Sigh, this is good as more "unlimited" plans are emerging these days offering a flat rate for anything you want to do with your cellphone which is great for comopetition. But what is dissapointing is that Canada is about 5 - 10 years behind the US in implementing these pricing schemes as the 2 monopolisitc communications companies insist on nickle and diming Canadians for every little service you might want on your cellphone and unlimited plans tend to start at around $80 and are not actually unlimited.
- ubitendo, on 03/11/2009, -0/+9Hell yeah man! Some random dweeb on the Netz says some ***** then it must be true!
- DevilInPgh, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8As long as MetroPCS's service continues to suck, Verizon will see no reason.
- Cowicide, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8Agreed. iPhone needs to step up or it'll be roundly ditched.
- theragu40, on 03/11/2009, -0/+8I would think that most people are more interested in the unlimited texts and data than they are in unlimited voice.
- realestateloop, on 03/11/2009, -5/+13Good bye Tmobile!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- paker, on 03/11/2009, -0/+7That's why the company is called "METRO"
- sodypop77, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6... and iPhones use EDGE and 3G networks, so no you would not be able to use an iPhone with their service.
It would be like wearing roller skates to the ice rink. - Eliminator, on 03/11/2009, -0/+6No, MetroPCS uses CDMA and also the 1700 frequency band. (1900 as well).
- ileftfark, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7Yes, but US healthcare.
I win. - CoD4, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7One just opened up near my house too, they're gonna kill verizon with this
- blapierre, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5LG razr? Is that some kind of direct rip off of the Motorola razr?
- pook187, on 03/11/2009, -0/+5I'm with you guys. F you ATT!
- UselessTrivia, on 03/11/2009, -2/+7***** YES!!!
I hope the big boys cut prices to compete! I'm in the market for a personal cell phone and this might just do it. - slamtv7, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4News Flash: Poster above doesn't know anything
- bbqribs, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4The fact that you're not locked into a contract and if you can't afford the bill they simply shut you off instead of sending collection agencies after you is a HUGE selling point for many people.
- SoopaflySAM, on 03/11/2009, -3/+7*****!!! I had ***** before.... service sucks big time. I wouldn't get reception in my own apartment, half my text messages sent were lost, and you cant call out of area.
- slamtv7, on 03/11/2009, -0/+465 - 50 = 15
- andy3109, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4An extra $200 for the phone OR an extra $1200 for the 2 year contract...you choose.
Either way, MetroPCS is crap until they can serve a larger network...I want to be able to talk on my phone when I go on a road trip. - inactive, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4awesome now all the crackheads and drug dealers can have unlimited texts :D
- PathmarkPolice, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4Iphone's GSM. Metro PCS operates on CDMA bands so you can't use it. Even buying used CDMA phones that were originally configured to work with specific carriers, but operate on the same bands, tend to have issues after a while. For example, even though Nextel and Boost mobile operate on the same bands and are both owned by Sprint, you cannot use the Nextel BB Curve with $50 unlimited Boost Mobile service. Text and calls work for a while, but Nextel somehow stops these functions from working after a while and you'll receive an error message regarding a non-compatible SIM card or another.
GSM is a bit easier in that as long as the phone is unlocked, text and calls will work by default once the sim card is inserted (and if the carrier operates on the same bands that phone is configured for. But pretty much all mid to high range phones nowadays are Quad band, so, again, this isn't a problem)
So no iphone for MetroPCS, unless Metro PCS goes GSM (way to expensive) or they commission apple to build a CDMA iphone to operate on their bands. - jonmlm, on 03/11/2009, -0/+4but... it's metro pcs.
- tekhna, on 03/11/2009, -2/+5What are you talking about? MetroPCS works in NYC. My girlfriend's mom just came here for a semester sabbatical from Israel and she got the MetroPCS 40/month plan, month to month and a free phone. It works really well. She never leaves the city, so it's perfect for her.
Edit-I see now that it's the bandwidth issue. That sucks, but the normal MetroPCS in NYC is awesome. - Eliminator, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Metro PCS uses CDMA and also 1700 frequency band.
- paker, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3You you don't get "raped" unless you have Travel Talk turned on. If you don't you just don't get a signal.
- PathmarkPolice, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3It depends on what area you're in. Coverage is spotty in some parts of North Jersey like Jersey City. Newark and other "bigger" city areas tend to have more coverage. But if you're out in the boonies somewhere you're most likely going to get screwed. Granted, emergency calls work almost everywehre though, so you're not COMPLETELY assed out if you're being chased by homicidal maniacs in the woods.
- anders5689, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3Oh man when my plan expires i'm jumping all over this. Luckily, I go to school Miami, and Metro has pretty good coverage throughout most of florida, especially tampa, my home town. So, I'll be able to get coverage like 90% of the time without roaming.
Either way, competition is nothing but good! Hopefully as their network grows, their reputation as a shoddy cell phone company will disappear along with their dead spots, and the other cell phone companies will be FORCED to switch their rates. I eagerly await the day when I can stop being raped by T-Mobile. - ScottyMcBaggs, on 03/11/2009, -1/+4Yea, except that doesn't include voice. That's why this article is even on digg. *****.
- zirconx, on 03/11/2009, -3/+6If they cover your metro area and you don't travel a lot, its great. It works when you travel, too, its just 19cents a minute.
- eros42, on 03/11/2009, -0/+3MetroPCS may be one of the small players with not the best coverage but this shows that convergence in pricing can be established. The cell companies already get away with murder, it's time to drive the price down.
- NicoNicoNico, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2@m00nmaster, when I was growing up, we had Kaiser Permanente. Two months or more wait for an appointment if it wasn't an emergency. At least mom got it for free through her employer.
- Knowone, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Careful, they have limited coverage. Wash DC area :(
- mizike, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I would much, much, rather pay a high upfront cost and then a low monthly payment than the other way around. If the phone were free, but the monthly payment doubled, you'd be losing money after 9 months. Most people keep their phone for longer than that.
- ubitendo, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I'm in North Jersey and in the New York area. I see that they have the coverage for my area, but I'm wondering how good the quality is.
LOL, who the hell gave me a negative digg -- Verizon? - Trifold, on 03/11/2009, -2/+4How long have these guys been around? I live around Boston, and 3 of them have popped up within a mile radius in the past couple of months. (Sorry, if this is in the article, firewall blocks it)
Anyways, that is a damn fair deal. Hopefully this will cause the major providers to rethink their absurd rates. ($10+/mo for text messages? Really?) - carlosos, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2At least in Florida they got coverage almost as good as the other big ones (only the North-West is missing)
- malonie, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2I was just in one of the new MetroPcs office right next to my house 30 minutes before this article went frontpage, Im here in Queens, NY.
They do have a great plan, i wanted to switch to them from Tmobile , too bad I still have a year and a half left on my contract - notman, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2Unfortunately, that is very true. I actually almost went to MetroPCS this last summer, but the coverage area is still too small, and my coworker has Metro, and his calls to me were dropped several times around that time. I stayed with Verizon, but if Metro ever addresses these issues, I'll be leaving Verizon. Verizon should realize though, if a customer leaves, it won't matter what you do, it's hard to get those customers to return if you didn't take care of them
- litkaj, on 03/11/2009, -2/+4Check the coverage map for MetroPCS. It's not very good, even compared to T-Mobile, and they charge 0.19c/min for roaming (which is pretty much everywhere if you're not within 30 miles of a major city).
- bri719, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2this is great in concept, but I agree about Metro PCS, which is why it's so damn cheap. it's T-mobile's coverage (which is still shady) minus 5 years. half the price of Verizon, and half the area. makes sense.
now if Virgin Mobile (Sprint network) would just offer this Blackberry deal, I'd be first in line..... - cheddaro, on 03/11/2009, -1/+3If you are usually in the same geographic area then MetroPCS and Cricket are great services. I've had both for years, and was always happy with both services. Especially considering the price. To get a similar plan on T-Mobile is $100+
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1That's cause Cricket is there.
- Deeh, on 03/11/2009, -1/+2I say this is another attempt at digg gaming for advertising by power user. How much they payin' you badqat?
- bbqribs, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1MetroPCS has actually been around for quite a few years, and they've been doing pretty well. They have a growing footprint in the SF Bay Area, here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, Atlanta, and a few other metro markets. They also have a new agreement with Cricket which expands that significantly.
- paker, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1You can with Travel Talk (roaming), but if you're in an out of state Cricket or metroPCS area you talk free.
