- NoUse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81That's crazy. I'm a man and I'm at work. I don't see any men surfing for personal use... Oh...
I retract my previous statement. - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67That's because men have years of experience dodging spyware on porn sites while women (generally) do not.
- sirsteveh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Conclusion: Then you'll never meet one. ;)
- DrakeGTA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Ironically, I’ve been surfing at work everyday for three years, no problem. They hired this chick a while back, it took her one month to get the whole network full of spyware by downloading games off the internet.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Of course we surf more at work. We have digg!
- enthalpyofsleep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Blah! I hate it when "my own kind" ruins my reputation. I can drive and I never have problems with spyware. It's even worse when some girls parade around that they can't drive and can't use a computer as a fact.
- cflorig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Wow it's official...I'm a statistic.
- theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Conclusion: Women shouldn't use computers.
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I agree with the spyware statement, I go away for one weekend, and my sister uses my computer. When I get back, I find my Windows partition has 9(!) viruses. I ask her what the hell she did, she replies, "oh, I just downloaded some cool Sims characters, and this great new game!"
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23I never ever digg at work ;)
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20capn_caveman,
You sir, are a bad liar. :-) - montiff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@theman8631
I support Women using computers, only if under the supervision of a male.
Or When the life of the Woman is threatened. - sja32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16You fellas aren't seeing the solution here. My boyfriend has been a digg junkie for as long as I've known him...the trick is to pass on your nerdy to knowledge to us ladies, and we repay you accordingly...plus we'll be less likely to infect your computer when we borrow it.
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18There's girls on digg!?!?!
JK :) - Progranism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Real men use Firefox.
- jpfinch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15This and more in the next edition of the Encyclopedia of Duh
- wizpig64, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15The problem isn't just surfing the net for personal use, it's downloading bullcrap. Like DrakeGTA said, Ms. Spyware infected the network by being ignorant and downloading games. Drake wasn't a problem for 3 years because, like most digg users, he knows a thing or two about the internet.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13confuscius say, chop your own wood and it warms you twice.
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Real foxes use Fireman.
- Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The two women at my office are constantly on MySpace
- dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9At work I have a squid proxy configured to block digg, slashdot, google news, and a number of other news sites except during lunch and break times. And I'm the only one who uses the proxy.
- bitt3n, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14you are all just male chauvanists retarding the forward march of feminism!
ps. can somebody tell me how to get White-Out off my monitor? I accidentally deleted the wrong word. - BitCrusher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's why you should always have a hard to guess password on all of your user accounts. Life is too short to waste cleaning up your computer after someone decided to download Spongebob screensavers and pictures of emo bands.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I do this too, I just can't resist it.
Program for a few hours and its nice to go to Digg or Reddit to chill out for a bit. The only problem with those sites is I want to look at them every 10 minutes (and I often do). - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you want to know what a world without women is like, i suggest you take a computer science course.
its an inexcusable incompetance that is engendered in us from birth by societal norms, i guess. kind of like the way men aren't expected to know how to cook.
who the hell is downvoting all my posts, and why? - Ashex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's hard not to surf digg at work. I have an internship in a computer lab, and sometimes my boss will call me over when he finds a cool site. Plus we're the only two people who use digg so we tend to surf the web and talk about digg articles together.
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm more scared about this girl I know installing Bittorrent on my computer and using a root-kit to hide it and then using it to download the OC.
To just prevent spyware getting on a computer, just simply put limited access on an account and don't let them use IE, then your set. - neutrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought the bit about "Women more likey to download spyware, call help desk" was a joke and cracked up until I saw the actual article.
Note that it's 65% of men vs. 58% of women who surf at work, not a really huge difference. And this part surprised me too: "Of those that admitted to viewing pornography sites at work, 6 percent of the men and 5 percent of the women admitted it was intentional."
What?! - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i make them work to ***** my computer up.
by running linux, of course. - lbeaty1981, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I majored in computer science, so for my first 3 years of college, I thought I was attending a men-only university. My senior year, though, I had a course in the business building. Imagine my surprise the first day I walked into the building and saw WOMEN! It was then that I realized that I had made a horrible mistake in choosing my major. :(
- falcyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hate to say this, but RTFA. Their own title is off the mark.
It says women are more likely to ADMIT to being infected with spyware, and are more likely to call the help desk for help. It specifically steers clear of saying that women infect computers more often, and almost infers that men have more problems but (as with the classic of lost/directions) are more hesitant to admit it and/or ask for help.
Note that I'm a man writing this. But the sub-headline still was funny.
"The Employee survey also reveals that men and women hold different views regarding web-based threats such as spyware and when to involve help desk to remedy the situation." - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I always surf at work. It's part of the deal. I'm salary. 40+ hours a week.
I dam well better be able to surf. - theguy10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe that you are on to something here. This could very well be true.
On a personal note, two days ago my wife forwarded me an email asking if she should call the number in it to see if it was a legit email. It was a typical 419 scam with a +31 country code(Holland) but I was amazed that she was even considering calling to see if it was real. Then I realized that she doesn't have anything like the AOL address I have been using since 7th grade (I'm 24 now) for junk mail. That address gets at least 200 messages a day of which i haven't read in years. - enthalpyofsleep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hahaha. www.teamxar.com. I'm the only girl on the DARPA GC team other than our chief advisor. Our website is under going major reconstruction right now though :P
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Define "accordingly." :-D
/pig - HTDUDE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shoot, My office web access is so restricted it's not even worth trying to use it...............$#!%
Beside my home internet is 10x faster than the office. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always digg, especially at work, i figure if caught i can say i was just reading "the real news"
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It was on the family desktop, and I gave her the password so she could play the sims(her account was a limited user one)
- tony23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@cohrtq - it usually helps to start dating first
- eleight4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2boys...
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad the description is wrong....the article doesn't state that women get spyware more often than men.
"45 percent of female employees who have visited websites containing spyware say their work PCs have been negatively impacted by spyware versus 35 percent of male employees. Once a computer was infected with spyware, 64 percent of women who visited websites containing spyware have called their IT department for help whereas only 30 percent of men have done so." - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4sapo
if you like man-only events, may i suggest an engineering major or a personals website? any will do. - jcronkhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1At work? Really? Hold on... my boss is coming...
- U2groupie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@nailbunny:
I can't. We have web-based applications we have to use that are provided by the vehicle manufacturers that have to be used in IE or nothing at all. Same with the way we pull credit reports. I've tried (in vain) to get the guys to use Firefox for personal use and IE for business use, but they don't care because all they have to do when their computer takes a crap is call me away from my more important duties to fix it for them.
Basically, it's just selfish behavior.
And because the owners of our dealership are cheap, I can't get them to pay for anti-virus tools, etc. that I could run on the server side. Our anti-virus protection? AVG (free version) run from each workstation individually. But if the guys turn AVG off, or don't use the tools provided (SpyBot, etc.) they don't do any good, do they?
I *really* hate my job. - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds like you need to take preventative measures. install firefox or thunderbird or linux or something, hide IE and outlook express, unless that would threaten your livelihood...
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wayjer Why Do You Submit Stories All In Capitals Like This?
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never surf the web from home, only at work. After being on the computer all day at work I dont want to be on my home PC for anything other then some ass kicking in Medal of Honor. My wife does all the mapquesting, bill paying, and googling at home. I only Digg while at work too.
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ring the help desk? Never!!!!
There's a cool sketch on Man stroke woman about this. - U2groupie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am a woman, working in a male-dominated company (car dealership) and part of my responsibilities include cleaning out all the spyware, viruses, etc. from the network and workstations here. It's disgusting how badly and how quickly these computers get infected. Last Friday, I had to reinstall Windows on a computer that was probably one of the worst cases I'd ever seen. By the time I returned to work Monday, it was all jacked up again.
If you men have to sit around cruising pr0n and casino sites all day, rather than doing your job, FINE. It's not my job to care. But it is my job (at this company, anyway) to clean up your messes... so learn to stop making messes!
As a woman, yeah, I'm surfing the Internet for personal things too... Digg, mostly. I have the only two computers in the whole company (50+ employees, only 4 are women) that have never been infected by anything.
Because I'm not stupid. -
