- MikeyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"a hacker that spends 9 hours a day on the computer, has no friends, and helps people to steal stuff is a hero?"
He's my hero. People are able to exercise their fair-use rights thanks to him. If I buy a DVD I should be able to make copies for back-up purposes, transfer the movie to a portable device or Media Centre PC and even make a limited number of copies for family and friends as is allowed under Fair Use. Sure piracy is rampant, but tough. My right to do as I please with a DVD I've purchased trumps Hollywood's need for control. And 9 hours a day in front of a computer isn't that bad. - Califax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jeeze, this guy gets way too much noteriety. Release groups could release movies without the need of 'decSS' all he did was help people back up their movies
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I buy my music and movies, but I admire what this guy represents. I doubt the MPAA or the RIAA will ever understand the losing war they are fighting, but its people like this guy who help encourage all in the fight against these ruthless corporate money-grubbing idiots. Being told that we are is essence just "renting" the movies and music we purchase is moronic, and I look forward to the next wave of "protection" being cracked by the world.
- raster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only 9 hours per day? Slacker...
Working full time and doing my own stuff at home quite often equals more than 9 hours. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hero? Maybe someone you are thankful for doing what he did, but hero? Is backing up a DVD really that important to you?
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Lol, a hacker that spends 9 hours a day on the computer, has no friends, and helps people to steal stuff is a hero?
What an age we live in. - jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1without this man.......... someone else would of broken the code :-P
- gorjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding, I mean, to achieve this guys level of infamy in the piracy world, I sure as ***** woulndt want to be this much of a loser...more power to him, but wow, what a life.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny how success seems to breed resentment in some people. Oh well. Hero or not...
Keep Rockin John! - hemidurango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Backups, copies for friends and piracy?
No one remembers the ultimate FAIR USE of being able to watch a movie on Linux? OK, all of you that have guns, knives, hammers, hacksaws and coat hangers better turn in those criminal tools right now! - PGvildys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, someone else would've eventually did it, but here's a 15 year old kid who did it. And the hype around him was mainly because he could be used for this publicity (being a kid and having done NOTHING illegal... at least, the courts eventually said this). The rights in what you own when you buy something digital - DVD, song, movie, etc - were brought to the forefront, which is the best reason behind his popularity.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if he started that blog, So Sue Me before or after he started breaking the DRM on iTunes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sosumi - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Jeeze, this guy gets way too much notoriety.
No, I'm pretty sure that his level of notoriety is just about right, if not under rated. If you just know him for DeCSS, then you're pretty lame and haven't been keeping up with the times... and whatever you do, don't confuse him with the Pirates Bay folks.
> I doubt the MPAA or the RIAA will ever
> understand the losing war they are fighting,
In my opinion, not only did this guy do a huge favor for the entertainment consuming public, but for the entertainment industry itself, What did they do? For all practical purposes: they shat on his head (you try living through a law suite sometime without settling). He is litterally saving them from themselves and they will never recognize or appreciate that fact.
> because of this guy, I can actually watch DVDs
I live outside of the US (region 1) in a country who's language I don't speak (very well). I represent the .01% of the world the entertainment industry directly *SCREWED*UP*THE*ASS when the cooked up CSS. I thank this guy *EVERY* time I watch a DVD.
> If "DVD Jon" had [remained] anonymous then I'd
> really consider him smart
Well, actually, you wouldn't consider him smart, because you wouldn't know who he was. You understand this concept of subjunctive future context, right? Fortunately for all, he had the balls to be open/share, face the music industry head on and won! For that I consider him both courageous and smart. Of course, he lives in a freer land than America; so, maybe being courageous and smart isn't such a big thing where he comes from.
> What were any of you doing at 15?
Pirating Apple II games (yes, they had copy protection).
> What are you doing now?
Pirating just about everything else.
I learned a very important lesson when I was a young pirate. You see, Byte (does anyone remember that magazine?) used to have these ads you could place in the back offering to trade software. You were safe as long as you didn't place and ad, but only responded to them (seeders vs lechers). I understood that one day after receiving a letter from a ad placer who was forced to explain (as part of his settlement) that trading was Bad(tm). Ah, yes... thank you, lawyers of America, for the sound education on why it is so desperately important to avoid you at all costs. - quietk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11337 diggs http://img460.imageshack.us/img460/3194/13373gd.jpg
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He is my hero too, ever since DeCSS. I hope EFF takes him under their wing when he comes to Cali.
- MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's very ironic considering I just happened to be running JHymn in the background while reading the article...
- wired4christ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^thats what some of his nine hrs infront of a computer end up doing
- basset, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a great article! What were any of you doing at 15? What are you doing now?
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And the millions of graphic designers, programmers, IT personnel, and secretaries don't spend nine hours a day on a computer?
- Bindibadgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0---------------
"no one knocked Einstein for creating the Nuclear Bomb"
Oppenheimer.

Ab-so-*****-lutely. - DogWings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really interestng article. If "DVD Jon" had the sense to remain anonymous then I'd really consider him smart.
- lunaemt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very interesting article. I hear about him a lot but don't know much about him. Until now. Hero maybe not but I would still like to shake his hand for what he has done. I still use juste tune so I can listen to legally purchased music from apple through my tivo. Its funny to me how the MPAA and RIAA say that him and people like him cost them so much money. I would like to see the numbers that they both pay to lawyers and court cost to track down and prosecute people for 1,500 to 7,000 settlements. I bet that adds up really fast.
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good.
- MikeyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hero? Maybe someone you are thankful for doing what he did, but hero? Is backing up a DVD really that important to you?"
Yeah, you are right. "Hero" is probably too strong a word. I am thankful for what he did. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apparently, yes. I bet that most people who backup movies give them to friends or something. Remember, I said *most*.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's to the crazy ones
- Flyinace2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting read.
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, mikeyc is correct. There is no question making a backup of a DVD is covered under fair use laws. Then why should software be crippled to not allow for that legal right?
It's dead simple. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0right, hacking Google's video player is SOOOO difficult.
- pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He is an awesome guy! Cracked Itunes DRM, CSS, and Google's video player...Amazing! Do you think his skill at de-DRM'ing is somthing anybody could learn and become proficcient at with practice or is it something "hard-coded" into him?
- robweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this guy is definitly my hero;
who cares how many hours he spends a day at a computer, and how many friends he has. if he likes what he does and does it well leave him the hell alone. - notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"he thing is, yeah 9 hours a day on a computer is pretty damn depressing in my eyes. But hey, no one knocked Einstein for creating the Nuclear Bomb or his Theory of Relativity did they? "
Are you really comparing him with Einstein? lol - csb138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good work. FTW.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i'm sorry but that's just ***** sad. Never going to get laid, NEVER!!!
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Internet movie piracy and "backing up" aside, because of this guy, I can actually watch DVDs (which I purchased with my own money) in Linux. Thank you Jon for letting us enjoy the media we own without restrictions.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only 9 hours? What a wimp.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice read but damn that article is LONG
- kinapuffen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He might be a real geek but arn't we all? Most of us would have loved to be able to have the brain power and programing skills this guy has showed.
DVD-Jon!!! - naiku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good read. jon is awesome.
- Braveheart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't Know about hero, but this guy has balls, At the age of 14 or whatever it was, standing up to Hollywood. Go DVD Jon.
- orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
im surprised paypal hasn't shutdown his donations page. - TK99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why some people think Einstein was any different than a 21st Computer Geek.
Einstein spent 14 hours a day with note pads and paper, and some times 20 hours in front of chalk board. He didn't have friends until he was in college and 23 years old. He was slow and never could tie his shoes nor talk well outside of typed letters. He never did well with people outside of the 5 friends he made in college. Heck he had one girlfriend in his life and it was his cousin (by marriage).
Is 'DVD Jon' a hero?
He is just a good man, who did a good.
And that's is all anyone can really do in this world. - snownskate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Johanson is the man, pure IT revoltist
- thefist_of_funk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So that who DVD Jon is... Johanson.. =D
- ajaykilkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice
- foolish.turkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd do him.
- JonestownTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Time for me to start making Free DVD-Jon Shirts.
- Wade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hero: sombody who gets innocent people killed"
You're drunk again Zoƫ. - Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I admire DVD Jon. I wish I had his brains. He's one smart fella.
- munroe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not much to say other than DVD-Jon is a hero to us all. We've all had the dream of 'hacking' something, but this guy does it daily. To major corporations. And gets away with it.
