- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I tried mt and didnt' work for me. Never got my money back. :(
- cavemonkey50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I recognize that as the case now. I am amending the post with the new information.
Regarding my referral link, I had one for (mt) there while I was with them. Trust me, I'm not trying to sell ASO's services. I just want to vent frustrations with (mt)'s horrible support. - fortyjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dugg. I had a disappointing experience with my Media Temple DV account, mostly because of their seemingly incompetent support staff.
The worst instance was when MT's support recommendation was that I move all accounts (20+ data-driven sites) off the machine, reimage it, and start over. Instead, I found a local guy who actually knew what he was doing, and he found and resolved the issue in about half an hour. It just amazed me that MT was willing to put me through the ordeal of porting that many sites back and forth in order to spare half an hour of support time. And that's just one of many stories.
We've sinced move to Deru (http://www.deru.net/). Their current website isn't much, but they've been the best host I've ever had in over 12 years doing website, and their support is comparable to Rackspace, in my opinion. They're not a sexy lifestyle host like Media Temple, but they get the job done. - sonaro, on 11/06/2007, -2/+8So this is where Media Temple's customer service reps are. Surfing Digg. Now I know why you guys took so long to respond to my tickets.
Media Temple's Grid-Server is the worst hosting I have ever experienced, followed by their absent customer service. They are knowingly selling a broken product. Within days of signing up, I first reported errors with MySQL and they sent me a link to their blog that documented their troubles and fix attempts. Thanks. Thanks for sending me that link. So you wanted me to wait while you fixed it?! Why was I even able to sign up in the first place if you guys new the damn thing didn't work?!
That's like McDonald's selling uncooked hamburgers and telling their customers to come back in 2 weeks when the ovens work. - howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've switched providers 4 times in the last 5 months... here's my chronicle:
Dreamhost - Slow, but cheap. I still have a dreamhost account for other sites, and probably always will.
MediaTemple GridServer - I had nothing but problems with this service. I am surprised and rather annoyed that they are charging for entry-level MySQL containers.
Pair Networks - Great service, didn't handle digg traffic very well. To be fair to them, you guys did send 20k hits in the first hour...
MediaTemple DV - I've had good luck with my Dedicated Virtual at MediaTemple. - sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@hkcavalier
The problems I had with MT were not due to pligg being incompatible. The site would work just fine until certain times of the day, every single day, like clock work. I know this was due to the increase in traffic to other websites on the grid because my site did not have that much. Also, the site was generally slow *all* of the time. I am also under the impression that if something uses php and MySQL, it should work on servers that have that software installed. Of course I could be wrong, but in this case, the site worked, the service was just slow and unreliable.
I also did check your list of compatible apps and I noticed the note:
"If I don't see an application on the known compatibility list does that mean it won't run on the Grid?
Absolutely not! The list of applications that are known to be compatible is for convenience only and doesn't represent a comprehensive list of applications that are capable of running on the Grid Server. "
I would also like to point out that there were plenty of times when the problem with the website was completely unrelated to compatibility issues or MySQL. These problems ranged from the control panel being inaccessible to my website being unreachable, as if I deleted the DNS. Minutes later I would refresh and the website would reappear. To show you what I mean, click this http://fj48fn3g5hedkd3e.com/ That's how bad it was.
This is also in reply to acomachine's comment as well:
Yes, they gave me a refund. Not hiding that at all. But I don't mind the $20.00 as much as the lost time. And yes, I have been through many hosts over the years and I certainly do my homework when choosing one. I chose Media Temple because of their reputation, but it goes to show that you should still do searches for blog posts such as this one:
http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/10/17/media-temple-crushes-shared-hosting/
Make sure to read the recent comments all the way down.
Yes, I found a new host; they're http://apisnetworks.com/ and they are unbelievably fast, reliable and the customer service is amazing. Matt is a very nice guy who helped me set up my software and some other options. I found these guys by doing a whois on websites that I saw get 'dugg' repeatedly and never went down or slowed up. When my site finally got dugg, it didn't go down either.
To each his own. Thanks for replying hkcavalier. - howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@hkcavalier:
I didn't realize there is a free version of the container. Thanks for clearing that up.
I'm going to stick with the DV, though, at least until I see a lot of proof that that new GridServer is actually worthwhile. - controltheweb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3First, of course, this cavemonkey has amended this.
Logically, any company that grows too fast is going to have service issues. What does "too fast" mean? Services that get a lot of press on social media sites (like Digg) often get a ton of new clients rapidly. Call it "Digg Effect 2.0" --- when a business can't handle the increased load from new clients who heard about on social media and blog sites. Looks like MediaTemple is the latest victim of it. - Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg for ASO... Been with them for years.
- hkcavalier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Again, MySQL was an issue but it didn't affect everyone. We have been transparent, we've offered refunds and we have launched updated MySQL solutions.
I've taken the time to look at your previous account and saw you were running Pligg. I see our support didn't ask you and point you to our list of Gird compatible apps (which does not list Pligg as compatible). That would cause me frustration as well: http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/faq/grid_compatible_applications-faq.htm
I also see on the Pligg forums we have not been approved to run Pligg as it might need some code tweaking: http://forums.pligg.com/showthread.php?t=193
I do hope you've found a good hosting solution. - hkcavalier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@sonaro: Sorry I wasn't clear. It's the MySQL issue that needed to be revised, or fixed, not the Grid-Server product. In our anatomy of MySQL blog post we we're very open about these issues.
@adsoftheworld: I looked up your account and you received credits on your credit card. Email me if you never got them. - tacomachine, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3sonaro,
As frustrating as this issue must have been..and apparently you're frustrated. Seems to me the issue has been explained. Hosting is a service, if you don't like your provider..you get another service. I'm shopping for hosting right now..i'm researching mt, Dreamhost, Godaddy and a few other smaller hosts like joyent...did you not research your product before you bought it? It said on the mt site that there's a money back guarantee as well..so I'm assuming you took advantage of that and did that work?
i've only seen the dreamhost and the mt post their issues in blogs..OH, also the joyent...have you seen this elsewhere? That's a good thing in my book and i'd like some more suggestions - hkcavalier, on 11/06/2007, -5/+7I'm not a customer service rep at (mt) but I do talk to customers all the time (I'm in marketing). It's not a broken product and we have been very forthcoming about issues we are fixing with it (we also offer a 30 day money back guarantee). Few hosting companies put a "system status" link directly on their product page and try to be open about issues and how fast we are trying to correct them (our revised MySQL solutions are now active btw)
The previous MySQL setup did work for many people but from what you are telling me, that was not your case (we do have over 55,000 domains on the Grid-Server). I'd like to know more from you about what issues you we're having and what apps you we're running, feedback is always welcome. Based on what you're saying, it sounds like I could learn a lot on where we failed you. You can email me directly at alexatmediatemple.net
Finally, the service dept has been busy as we have been growing incredibly fast with the Grid-Server and the (dv) line. We are always adding more techs and are looking for more to hire. I apologize for your tickets not being answered in a timely fashion. - sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well then, there should be a post to your blog from the product page that states the problems. This link should be highlighted.
Also, MySQL is part of the Grid-Server product. - howtogeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@hkcavalier again:
After looking at the marketing docs... you should really add the "dedicated 64mb Mysql" into the "Features Include" section on this page: http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/
Also, you really should state that right on the overview page. It's understandable why people are getting confused. - hkcavalier, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@howtogeek:
Thanks! That's a really good point. going to bring it up today to the team.
The (dv) is a great choice as well. As a consumer myself, I understand why you want to stay put for now. I think when people see that its a stable platform and feel comfortable, they'll considering moving over to it.
People don't seem to realize these MySQL GridContainers are close to the power of our previous (dv) base, it's only 20 per month, and its mated to the multi-clustered front end of the Grid-Server. Might have to revise that marketing as well! - webtweakers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man, deru.net gives a 404. Can't be that good!
- hkcavalier, on 11/06/2007, -6/+6Greetings, there are misconceptions going around on the Grid-Server's revised MySQL. You do get a container on the Grid-Server's free MySQL system (aka MySQL v.2 SmartPool). When you need dedicated resources you are bursted into it seamlessly (when you have a Digg, Slashdot, etc) but you don't get the controls and the tools that come with the paid container.
You can read more on our site here: http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/mysql-pool.htm - barbados, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The url should be http://www.deru.net - the link above has a period and parentheses attached to it as fortymedia wanted to put the link inside parentheses...
- chokeumout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In the "Last Straw" section cavemonkey claims that (mt) is charging for MySQL containers, but per the above comments I guess that's been debunked. I wonder how a post that bashes one hosting company while sporting a referral link to a competitor (A Small Orange near the bottom) can be viewed as unbiased?
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wrong reply.
- sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@hkcavalier
"It's not a broken product and we have been very forthcoming about issues we are fixing with it (we also offer a 30 day money back guarantee). "
So why are you fixing something that is not broken?
