- benthere16, on 07/20/2009, -1/+14Isn't this article just perpetuating that free media coverage?
- liquisoft, on 07/20/2009, -0/+12The "media" loves twitter because twitter is free and they think all the cool kids use it.
It's just like facebook was, and how myspace was. - netneutrality, on 07/20/2009, -1/+12I get to bury this for:
1. Twitter.
2. TechCrunch.
Excellent. - zantos420, on 07/20/2009, -5/+14twitter is full of self-important douche bags.
- prateeko, on 07/20/2009, -1/+7TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER TWITTER TRACKER !!!!!!!!
OHHHH YYEEEEAAAHHHHH!! - SteveMTyler, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6I think twitter has replaced press releases for lazy publicists. Now the reporter has to report about twitter and the twit instead of repackaging the press release into an article.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6Of course they love Twitter... it provides them a platform for free advertising. And a league of morons are always there, waiting for them to post more *****. These people, on both sides, are pathetic.
- migitalwarfare, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6Never found a solid use for Twitter.
It's not a game changer, as it's own 140 character limit only serves to differentiate itself from a blog, and blogs have been delivering information better and doing it longer than twitter has been around.
It's not suited to deliver breaking news, as the media would have you believe happened with the Hudson River plane crash. Yes, many people posted about it on twitter long before any major news outlet reported on it, but none of those twitter posts carried any actual useful information past what people saw that second. No control tower feedback, no interviews, no concrete facts, just what the twitter user thought was going on at the time. No useful information was being delivered until the news outlets picked up the story and started investigating the story, so please tell me again what twitter did to inform the nation? the 5 minutes of "heads up" didn't do anything other than distribute a lot of false information and panic.
It's not useful for communication, again, because of the 140 character limit and the fact that it's primarily web based. If I want to send someone a quick message, I'll send a text message. There's no reason for me to have to log into twitter when I already have easier communication methods with people I would be following on twitter.
The fact that twitter has trouble finding ways to financially support itself should be telling you just how useful it really is. They can't charge a fee for membership, because most people would stop using it. They can't figure out a way to make a lot of ad revenue because, again, people would stop using it if it were plastered with ads.
There are just better, more useful options out there, and it'll only be a matter of time before it's abandoned as a stupid idea (read: Second Life's story) - Trifold, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Hey, remember those few months there where the media was convinced that Second Life was gonna change the way we live and work and interact with each other?
Yeah, the media doesn't really know much about technology. It's facebook statuses with a little bird logo. That's it. Just because Shaq uses it doesn't mean it's gonna change information forever, let's all just take a step back and calm down a bit. - t0x2c, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4“This is huge. It’s very, very high. In fact, we looked at online coverage of Twitter vs. Google. Twitter is running significantly higher than Google and I didn’t think anything was more popular than Google.”
Fail at 140 char limit. - gureyes, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3the only good thing to come from twitter
- enevitable, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I wish it was her interns tweeting, but something tells me not even her interns are this daft:
"# & mama bear doesn't look 2 anyone else 2 hand her anything; biologists say she works harder than males, is provider/protector for the future10:40 PM Jul 15th from TwitterBerry
#
protect & provide for her young; She sees danger? She brazenly rises up on strong hind legs, growls Don't Touch My Cubs & the species survives10:38 PM Jul 15th from TwitterBerry "
The lack of cognition aside, how hard is it to type to instead of 2 on a blackberry? It's even the same number of keys. - Rotzooi, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2If you want to read what are undoubtedly unpaid interns tweeting as Sarah Palin:
http://twitter.com/AKGovSarahPalin - enevitable, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3I vehemently hate twitter like much of the internet, but it has proved useful for one thing: Quantifying how intellectually devoid Sarah Palin is.
- thesportoflife, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1oh the irony.
- akula89, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1their number should be 48 million 5 thousand or so since this article will bring in visitors equivalent to 5k worth of advertising
- LordVance, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Because there is so much as a single person who views digg or techcrunch that didn't already know about twitter...
- theOster, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1as everyone keeps saying, twitter is more useful for timely searches than for listening to DBs. and actually, i hate to say it but http://bingtweets.com/ is actually pretty cool. (and i'll be the first to admit that i'm no fan of MS)
- wjlaw100, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1I found one use for it.....ONE. Turned it on, Turned it off.
Was coordinating seeing a steam engine as it made its way from Oregon past the Chicago suburbs.... a person on the train was twittering (or tweeting, or whatever they do), with location and status in real time as they went. I was able to judge its eta to our location based upon this (the person could have been more efficient)... was useful for one way mass distribution of small quantities of data in near real time.
This has been the only use. I really don't care when people are doing anything, nor should really anyone care about what I'm doing, and people who use twitter as a daily, hourly, minute-ly thing need to observe life around them.
Perhaps useful for things such as this? Going to Disneyworld and "subscribing" to a feed for lets say, space mountain, and getting updates with waiting times??? Once again, one way, near real time broadcast (push if you will) to a mass group of diverse receivers (different types of cell phones) of small amounts of relatively important data...
Usefully cause automated self-subscribed system for data in near real time, and issuer does not have to care about who is subscribing, knowing who is subscribed, etc. - PontdePierre, on 07/20/2009, -3/+1Except kids once used Myspace and are using Facebook at the moment. Very few self-respecting people under 30 use twitter.
- serif69, on 07/20/2009, -10/+7Said the person compelled to spew his opinion to random strangers on the internet.
- xdevit, on 07/20/2009, -7/+3What a waste of money...
Why not spend all that on say new show ideas ?
One or two less (insert crime/cop show).
One less stupid reality show ?
NBC, Maybe just pay off Jay, I love Jay but ***** NBC has bent over and gave him a nightly /PRIME TIME/ time slot to do jokes ?
List goes on... - FI5HERMAN, on 07/20/2009, -8/+2Well Well there you go, a perfect example of giving quality and value to your customers and the money will follow............say no more !!!
- inactive, on 07/20/2009, -7/+1I think I'll Retweet this!
