- HacKing, on 11/21/2007, -2/+100How ever much they lose, it wasn't enough.
- Metoz, on 11/21/2007, -2/+66Ha-ha!
- britishrob, on 11/21/2007, -1/+45These guys were useless at reducing BitTorrent activity, they joked about it in the emails. Maybe the settlements came when the clients finally found this out!
Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch. - pigfister, on 11/21/2007, -0/+28And who foots the bill for this mpaa dept?
the mpaa are: Sony, Paramount, Buena Vista(Disney), Universal, Fox & Warner. - BuzzFriendly, on 11/21/2007, -0/+26Too bad it wasn't enough to bankrupt them.
- gothicform, on 11/21/2007, -2/+21They'll lose a damn sight more when all the people who have paid up or been sued get wind of the evidence and move against Media Defender for doing things like lying about them. From what I understand Media Defender said that people were downloading movies when they were placing fake movies online that were not actually the original which rather raises the question of how people downloading from them were able to infringe copyrights of movies they hadn't downloaded. Financial oblivion beckons :)
- heavygravity, on 11/21/2007, -0/+19And here is a link to the leaked emails and source code of their software : http://mediadefender-defenders.com/ - have a look at it all, I am sure the more people that know about this, the more pleased they are :)
- whiski, on 11/21/2007, -0/+9Fully deserved.
- Cruelapollo, on 11/21/2007, -1/+6From the looks of it, everyone has done the opposite.
- luchid, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5Why, thank you Captain Obvious. What would we do without you!
- mjl5629, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4From the Financial Statement:
6. MEDIADEFENDER SECURITY BREACH
During the weekend of September 15 and 16, 2007, MediaDefender experienced an unlawful online security breach by hackers, which resulted in approximately 6,000 e-mails, as well as access to other confidential information and data, for the period from mid-December 2006 through September 10, 2007 being stolen and posted at numerous web-sites on the Internet. These e-mails contained confidential information and communications covering a wide variety of internal issues, including personal data, customer data and pricing information, and other sensitive information. This matter has been referred to the appropriate federal, state and local law enforcement organizations and an investigation is ongoing. An internal investigation of this matter is continuing, as a result of which the Company has revised various procedures and policies and enhanced its online and Internet security protocols. The Company does not believe that this breach has any impact on the Company’s accounting and financial controls or reporting systems.
As a result of this development, MediaDefender recorded approximately $600,000 for service credits to customers, which were recorded as a reduction to revenues during the three months ended September 30, 2007. This amount was determined based on various factors, including discussions with customers, and is subject to adjustment in future periods based on additional information. MediaDefender also recorded approximately $225,000 of legal, consulting and other direct costs related to the breach during the three months ended September 30, 2007. - gritta, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Pwned!
- Dayyve, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3$825,000 and possibly more. That's the most I've ever heard of anyone paying for a gmail account.
- tingrin87, on 11/21/2007, -2/+5want to discuss?
#mediadefender-defenders on efnet - xkorbin, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3I'm so confused right now... This argument is getting weird.
- Phusion, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Hah, take that you butt monkeys.
- misterjangles, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2"MediaDefender also recorded approximately $225,000 of legal, consulting and other direct costs related to the breach"
forget file sharers, lawyers are the ones losing everybody money. - bjornski, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Your CDs going up to $21.95 is what's gonna pay for it.
- darnit, on 11/21/2007, -3/+4Thar she blows!
- wil2200, on 11/21/2007, -5/+6oh now this is good news - i wish it was more
- bigteebo, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Is it truly $825K or is that trumped-up piracy lawsuit claim $?
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Yarr! *passes around the ale*
- Qumahlin, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1on a side note 15 people have dugg your comment, so thats 16 people in total who have no idea what MediaDefender actually did, yet are rooting for their monetary loss....interesting when you think about it
- jlane, on 11/21/2007, -2/+3can i get an 0wn3d?
- Qumahlin, on 11/21/2007, -1/+1Your completely incorrect. Media Defender actually wasn't involved in that aspect of things, thats what companies like BayTSP do. MediaDefender was only responsible for releasing and seeding fake torrents to make it harder for people to get the real stuff. If you read through all of the emails the only thing MediaDefender did that involved lawsuits/criminal charges in any fashion was due to the child pornography stuff they were helping the NY state general with.
So that answers your questions by invalidating all of them. - dupswapdrop, on 11/21/2007, -2/+1Oh you just wait Media Defender will get tons of government money to make up for their losses at the hands of hackers. Lets see who can guess their loss 10 million 50 million? After all it wasn't their fault right?
- azharcs, on 11/21/2007, -2/+0This is what happens when you are the bad guy in a good business....was i talking about Piracy.
- leerayIG88, on 11/21/2007, -8/+6$825,000? That's chump change for the company. Yes, I said chump change. I am rich and I consider this chump change.
Good day! - csplinter, on 11/21/2007, -4/+1Dugg up for retardedness
- riggs32, on 11/21/2007, -10/+6i buried you -1 times
- banmaster, on 11/21/2007, -7/+2Or movies not yet in cinemas of course!
- jonpotz, on 11/21/2007, -13/+6It is amazing that more people respect MDD than MD and a good thing at that. It is people like this that make it hard for me to download the King James bible, not to mention Comcast.
- capiCrimm, on 11/21/2007, -12/+3hrm, well if their banning bibles then perhaps comcast isn't so bad.
(and honestly, Gutenberg or any of the free online bible places should have sufficed. Linux is more proper for bit-torrent. - p2pblog, on 11/21/2007, -23/+1Check here for original story: http://digg.com/tech_news/Mediadefender_hack_costs ...
