- Belldanime, on 06/15/2008, -1/+43Media Defender is such an oxymoron.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 06/15/2008, -1/+39What a mess.
There's so many problems with internet media...
-DRM that locks customers to services/devices
-what to do when your hard drive crashes
-somethings legal somethings illegal and laws different everywhere
-companies that sue, and drop cases before they lose
-no way to determine authorized content or authorized access
-your computer or net connection pirating content = you doing it. No proof necessary.
-technology that accidentally violates draconian laws designed to protect content providers
-that same technology used by content providers ironically
-endless lobby groups trying to change laws so they can sue mass amounts of kids or get the govt to arrest/fine them
-laws that criminalize breaking encryption which are so unrealistic few actually take them seriously
-disks that install monitoring software to protect profits, limit usage, and encourage up-sells
-The only uniform standard is the MP3 one that pirates use. Guaranteed to work everywhere.
-American companies sending DMCA take down letters to people outside the USA.
-Bots crawling the web mass emailing webmasters about anything named similar to their protected content - KdoggMDF, on 06/15/2008, -0/+34Somehow they will find a way to screw whatever they try up. I can see them distributing these 'legal and branded' songs and then WHOOPS! They had a virus attached. and I agree with say592... take revision3 down again and they are asking for an all out assault on everything they have online.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/15/2008, -0/+15Best part of the article:
"So, on the one hand record labels are going after people who distribute their files online, and at the same time they spam these networks with authorized copies. Strangely enough, there is no way for the filesharer to make sure whether a file is authorized or not.
I’m not a lawyer of course, but this double standard must have some legal implications."
I hope some lawyer has a FIELD DAY with this.
I wonder if this would fall under Entrapment laws.. - inactive, on 06/15/2008, -1/+15I'm guessing the files they host all have watermarks rather than DRM so that they can uniquely identify you as a bittorrent user, that way keep track of what files you download and in return, sue you...
- samthurston, on 06/15/2008, -1/+13This is actually the first thing they are doing that I can't object to on face... there's no subterfuge, they've actually figured out a way to make p2p profitable to the labels. I don't think I would mind free music provided there's an ad tacked on. how different is that from commercial radio?
Where it gets sticky, (and this is touched on by the article) is: how am I supposed to know if the file I am downloading is an authorized copy or not? - inactive, on 06/15/2008, -0/+11...kill 'em.
- AnarchyIsOrder1, on 06/15/2008, -0/+9I have a hard time trusting anything coming from MediaDefender.
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -1/+9Do your part by downloading http://www.mediadefender.com/marketing/Kanye_West- ... and subsequently removing the related "Boost" marketing crap and album artwork. Free MP3 thanks to MediaDefender!
- drsox, on 06/15/2008, -0/+7haha their website looks like it comes from 1997 - http://www.mediadefender.com
- Tatootian, on 06/15/2008, -1/+8:/
- twiztidsinz, on 06/15/2008, -0/+6I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after people for unauthorized redistribution though, you gotta remember...
This is MediaDefender, that's how they roll. - carpespasm, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5...try to ruin their fun.
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5WOOOOOOOSH

Seriously, they could get IP's from server logs... - Belldanime, on 06/15/2008, -0/+5Kissing ass much? Had to ask.
- Shreyasva, on 06/15/2008, -6/+10ahhh finally they r defending the media
- iiiears, on 06/15/2008, -0/+4The content providers only protect what benefits them. They have discovered profit in efficient distribution expect legislation to defend their right to distribute content efficiently very soon. Expect even more content filtering for those without a government sanctioned license. I think the next windows version will limit the number of simultaneous connections unless a properly licensed software is purchased.
- edgeofreason, on 06/15/2008, -2/+5If you can't beat 'em...
- benologist, on 06/15/2008, -0/+3By creating a way to catalogue or search their specific library.
- allyant, on 06/16/2008, -0/+2It uses tables, and the security is crap, all there directory's are open like http://www.mediadefender.com/news/
Looks like they closed of the /marketing/ folder. - inactive, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3Sucking dick much? Didn't have to ask something obvious.
- DalamarArgent, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3I'd put money on this just being another honey pot scam from those sketchy SOBs.
- gcnaddict, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2Already does for certain local-network-related tasks. That's what Windows Server is for.
There's no plan for expanding this to non-Microsoft services, nor will there be. - Shadowgamers, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2http://www.mediadefender.com/marketing/
Too bad their choice of poison tastes like piss. But looking at the dates, these files have been there for a while now.. - mCanada, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2I believe you have to be a Cop to entrap someone.
- Belldanime, on 06/15/2008, -2/+4Being a douche, much? Though you ought to know.
- praisethelard, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2The Ice King is an oxymoron.
- KaivenTor, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2Almost seems like MediaDefender is trying to play devils advocate, but I have this nagging feeling like they're really trying to set up some elaborate entrapment scheme. Then again, I would expect something like this to come from a company using torrent services all day for their nefarious attacks rather then the RIAA who probably think that torrents are the "Devils work" or some such.
http://www.socialbrew.com/photo/photo/show?id=2053 ... - blup3ace, on 06/15/2008, -0/+2i read it as ahh they r diarrheaing the media...
and it's not much different - jjb123, on 06/15/2008, -1/+3Nobody cares.
- danarama, on 06/15/2008, -1/+2not an oxymoron that would mean it contradicts itself as a phrase it's just ironic that Media Defender is called media defender considering what they've done
- fattony89, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1damn i was hoping they would go bankrupt soon.
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -1/+2MediaDefender are a load of Douches
- diggproof, on 06/15/2008, -1/+2Yeah but how would a watermark do that?
- samuraiswordsmn, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1So.. what they have done now, is not only disabled the ability for some P2P users from sharing files and essentially obstructing traffic on those networks, but now they're turning around and using these networks they have sabotaged as newly acquired "shop territory" to distribute files that are sold (force-fed advertising is still considered an act of sale, in my book.) by their shareholders? Yeah, these guys sure need to change the way they supposedly "do business"..
- flaknugget, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Lol... they still use limewire.
- ScrGrl, on 06/15/2008, -2/+3***** the RIAA
- happyseamonster, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Defend this.
- inactive, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1no matter how many battles they win the war is already lost
- twiztidsinz, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1It's not 100% entrapment as the definition is 'An action by a law enforcement agent with the intent for an otherwise innocent person to commit a crime, in order to arrest and prosecute that person'.
However it is a very similar case in that they are distributing the files in the same manner as those who are being punished and having no overt way to differentiate the two.
Hence I inquired if it would fall under Entrapment laws and did not say it WAS entrapment. - grungemusic3001, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1there is some wierd ***** in their marketing folder
for instance:
http://www.mediadefender.com/marketing/HBO_Watcher ...
lolwtf
The folder is wide open, you can view their powerpoint presentations on their attempts at p2p marketing, etc.
http://www.mediadefender.com/marketing/ - Tenoq, on 06/16/2008, -0/+1Some countries don't even have entrapment laws (Australia, for example).
- Belldanime, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Hence the joke. Trrrn-tish!
- Travelsonic, on 06/15/2008, -0/+1Looks like they still have the article on the original site, looks like nothing has been stolen to me. < / j joke>
