- SectorNation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39*Sigh*. READ the article before you post. A Forbes analyst BELIEVES McNealy may quit. It doesn't say he's announced anything. NO DIGG!
- SFBay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23So let me see. A Forbes analyst thinks that McNealy might quit. And some blogger reckons that Google might buy Sun.
Seriously .. this is not news, this is not even informed speculation, this is just some blogger jerking off. No fricking digg and I wish I could undigg this until it had minus one million diggs.
So, does EVERYONE want digg to turn into the "stupid blog rumour of the hour" web site? It seems so? - scaaven2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23No digg moron, McNealy hasn't resigned...
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yea, that should read..."If McNealy Resigns, Will Google Buy Sun Microsystems?"
- amalik49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@sfbay:
Right on. Seems like every idiot on Digg wants to make the front page and posts hearsay and rumors in order to do so. The front page is turning into a tabloid like smattering of *****. There needs to be a "negative digg" option on stories like there is on comments so that crap like this can be buried deep in the bowels of the *****-show that Digg is turning into. Wink.com anyone? - LaslarsFermion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Google needs an OS, an OS that already has its own branded hardware, tested reliability and also interoperability with every other OS is a good bet. Sun are a MASSIVE company in business sectors. They just dont really sell to the end user. Add googles "user centric" stuff with suns "reliability is king" backend, and you have a match made in heaven (for me anyways)
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"Google has been trading well under the NASDAQ benchmark index for some time now"
Heh heh lol. Dude, use a 1 year chart instead of a 4 month chart. Then come back and talk to me about how poorly GOOG is doing compared to the NASDAQ! - mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -12/+20You guys missed the memo. The Java-is-way-slow meme went out several years ago.
- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Uhuh...And exactly why does Google need/want Sun?
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Google needs an OS? Why? Solaris is now open source, so if it is a new OS they want they will need to develop it. Sun is primarily a hardware company, NOT a software company. Just because they have Solaris and developed Java (and a slew of other apps), doesn't mean that they don't derive most of their revenue from server and workstation hardware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I work directly with upper management at Sun and have heard that Scott is not leaving yet. So no digg.
- ratsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5reported as inaccurate. McNealy has not resigned.
- tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, Google is also building a new global wireless Internet, assembling a moonbase, converting all motion pictures every made into high-def 3D animations, curing cancer, cataloging every spec of organic matter on earth, and is buying India for backup storage.
- technstuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Report as inaccurate, enough of those will bury it.
- dreadsword, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This would fit with google's stated plan to be a $100 billion company
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm getting kind of sick of these idiotic sensationalistic headlines on digg. McNearly hasn't resigned, it's a rumor. Please change the headline accordingly. Story reported as inacurate.
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Exactly! The headline is amazingly misleading and was making me jump up and down all over the place... then I RTFA. I suggest the poster do the same next time.
- twylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3submitter & blogger = ID10T
- Jagmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree with sfbay, regardless of his flame style approach.
This isnt news so much as a rumor mill. I like seeing things on the front that are solid. Also it seems like there are digg bots out there that just news items... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This one has been buried off the frontpage. Pat yourselves on the back diggers. I call for a reactionary 3 month reflexive burying of blogs that make the frontpage. After 3 months we can reevaluate if we want to encourage people to post blog links by letting them make the frontpage.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google is a software/services company. Google has developed their own custom Linux distro for use in their infrastructure, complete with distributed network filesystem. Sure, Google needs growth, but I don't see why they'd want to get into (business oriented) hardware as anything other than a side business. If this did happen, Google could make a lot of people happy (especially IBM) if they immediately opened the Java source, which the developer community has been demanding for years. This entire scenario just seems bizarre.
- wheremyarm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Congrats on the well written tagline, best I've seen in awhile.
- rpdillon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say Java is designed for the lowest common denominator.
Oh, and at JavaOne last year, I spoke with a couple of guys from Google (since they had a booth) and they were saying that Java plays such a large part of their overall plan that they have a whole seperate heirarchy for hiring Java programmers (outside of their normal hiring cycle). Not sure if this is still true (it was last May they mentioned this), but I don't think you're correct in saying Google has no use for Java. - pwinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article itself isn't inaccurate. The submitter changed the headline and made the headline inaccurate. The difference between "Will Google Buy" and the parallel "Google Buys" is enormous.
- kitykity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They think those criteria have been met... I work with Sun servers for a living... they haven't established diddly as of recent. In fact, we've had more trouble with their support lately than ever before... and can you guess why?
- 700c26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why on earth would Google buy Sun? Both the OS market, and the hardware market are very far out from Google's primary interests. How would buying a mediocre performing hardware company benifit them in anyway? I think their stockholders would have a heart attack if they purchased Sun.
- harim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The info is false - McNeally has NOT resigned
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I wonder what an Open Source Java would be like.
- goofballjm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where have you been?
http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/0,2000061733,39149502,00.htm
Already in the works. This article is from nearly 2 years ago. - JohnA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2One word: Niagara
If you're wanting to create a "data center in a tractor trailer" for a wide variety of web apps, what better way to go about it than lots and lots of T1 based servers? - brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the continual cluelessness of Digg users. Google *already* uses Java for a lot of its backend code. There is a movement within Google to make Java ubiquitous throughout the organization's applications.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google should really buy SGI.
The machines match Google's pretty colors!!! - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seriously, let's get some perspective if we're comparing stock performance. Here's a one year chart for GOOG vs SUNW vs NASDAQ. Now who's underperforming? Who the hell looks at 3 months?
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=%5EIXIC&t=1y&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=GOOG&c=SUNW - boringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I have argued before, without a hardware platform the world's favourite search engine has little to rival Microsoft's Windows Vista"
Is having the hardware really that important anymore? What a poor comparison - Microsoft isn't really a hardware company either. This smacks heavily of conjecture.+ - CharlieInCO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guys, don't count your chickens ... as noted above, this is some analyst speculating. PROBABLY a scam ---
1. Buy SUNW straddles
2. Announce you think Scott will leave
3. Profilt! - senixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't keep my self from posting a comment...
If this happens this will be the biggest news in technology in over a decade. With this alliance MS will have a big problem on their hands.
Imagine... Gsungle :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You think YOU hate blogs? Check out this dude http://*****.blogspot.com
- manonmars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0McNealy has not resigned but he does have intentions to resign (Probably waiting for an offer from Google which he can't refuse).
- matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1gosh, i want to be a well known analyst and spout off about some crap or another, only to fatten my own portfolio.
seriously, this guy probably has a large amount of stock in Sun Micro, and wants to butter his own bread!!
all of his evidence doesn't show a single thing! so what the guy sold 10 mil in stock, maybe he wanted to buy a house. CEO liquidate stock as often as you or i change socks! - MRKisThatKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OMW, a google Solaris would be so awesome! The solaris kernel is years ahead of linux, it's just a bugger for desktop users because of it's unfriendly interface. But imagine if it was googlefied. I can't wait!
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'd digg this simply because it was time for McNealy to go...a long time ago.
However its a blogpost, so its gets a "+this is lame" instead. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0SparcloogleStation? Sound catchy. Sign me up.
- JohnA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1replied to wrong thread, sorry

- LaslarsFermion, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Google Os = Solaris?
I can dream - wyngnut, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Ummm, who cares? When was the last time you used a Sparc? Was about 5 years ago for me.
