- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually USB security keys are nothing new. And they are hard to hack without actually changing the code that depends on the key. It's not just some dumb storage device that does the security, but it's actually a small "security processor" that can run a small cryptographic routine that allows you to do a cryptographic Challenge to the device. Also security processors tend to be difficult to open up and read the bits out of, the key is stored in essentially a write-only architecture. SmartCards and other things have been using simple processors for quite some time, with various levels of difficulty to hack.
- elusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now if only someone could develop a 10 GB usb key we could get rid of DVDs. ;)
- trev0006, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1This is simply genius, I would have thought some of the other higher end companies would have this before Mazda. http://www.dpccars.com/
- Drumrboy247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how long till someone finds out how to dump the key codes into a Linux laptop and runs a brute force program to turn on the car??
- AnotherName, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1honey, could you email me my car keys again?
- Slinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that the USB key wouldn't be nearly as durable as a normal key. I want to keep my USB keys in computers, not cars.
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess Mazda hacks are gonna be the new rage.
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wanna brute force a car
- Jozone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dammit, page is down, I like the sound of it though.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For real! These aren't even out yet and people can see how easilly
it will be to exploit. - punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dead link
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Highly efficient auto-virus delivery system.
- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does the car run Linux? If it does I'll buy it!
- Draconiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the idea of the key and transfering music and maps...but could they work on the look of the car a bit?
- gModo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can understand having a usb input for flash drives, but a key just seems so vulnerable especially since the same layout of the plug comes on just about every external device for the PCs now a days.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice idea, but they're gonna have to come up with some kind of spectacular security. The last thing I want is a co-worker making a copy of my car key while I'm getting a soda from the vending machine.
- leitjaxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know what my next car will be.
- Jaesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if you'll have to worry about virus infections?
- Chamunks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0screw brute forcing thats a neat idea but why wouldnt car thieves do something more along the lines of completely bypassing the entire system as they used 2 u kno the sparking of those wires (besides that) you could do what those people were doing a while back where they were "spoofing" cover plates over the atm card slots so your card would be read twice and save all the info to a flash card for later pickup and such im sure u could do something like this u know hooked to a wifi transmitter n the outside of the car that you just upload the algorythms to a laptop and than upload it to the car and off u go type thing not even a spudder in the engin and off u go
- ddaydude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the outside looks sweet!! but the inside looks too minimalistic (i think thats a word) it looks too plain.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds cool.
I'm sure they'll make it deny any keys for a few seconds if a wrong key is supplied. This way if someone tries to bruteforce their way in and hooks up a laptop to your usb key hole on your car it will take them forever to guess the correct key. - The_Lance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah I have a feeling Mazda car theft is gonna go up..
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, I think the fact that the USB key starts the car is a bit of a worry, but if they would only use it for data transfer, it'd be great. They could also seamlessly integrate iPod or other DAPs into the stereo system
- isolino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it!
- allemannster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not only is the car sweet looking, but the USB idea is awesome.
- veneficus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, this is interesting... you guys know that Ford owns a large percentage of Mazda?
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well its nothing really that "new" per say. The USB part is new, yes, but BMW cars have had a similar feature for a long time. You cant plug it into your computer but it saves all your settings including what music you were listening to, what your seat config was, etc. (Anything you can change in the iDrive computer gets saved to the key) So when someone else uses their key to enter the car, the car adapts to their settings automatically without you having to switch the radio station back to yours or fix the seats, or the air conditioning settings, or even the GPS settings.
And heck the 7 series dont even have keys. You put in the whole remote and press "Start Engine" to start the car. Man I love BMW. - camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The invention of car hacking, I bet the next thing is built in wifi so you can plug your laptop in.
I wonder if it will come with "Mazda Software". That would be cool, then you could look at diagnostics from your car on your own computer. - Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do not want to buy a car without a non-electrically dependant mechanical unlocking mechanism. Engine is another matter, but I want to be able to get in the damn thing if the systems fail.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why on earth would you do this when all the other companies well the luxury ones first with the lower brands soon to follow I'm sure... are introducing wireless keys????
- Mais, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like the idea, but diggDoug makes a great point about lost keys. I think they should use an interface that's not so common though, something proprietary. Perhaps have a usb adapter for it that grants access to a separate storage area, one that isn't connected to the ignition portion at all.
- jk47h3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they are obviously going to have at least a 2 stage security systm in it. like you supply the usb key and a proximity card is in your wallet(which also can be duped) or a biometric scan would be administered.
- diggDoug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A steering wheel !? Boring!
The idea of starting a car via dongle is not new, but I digg the concept all the same.
However, like existing security keys, they fail and you're screwed without the help of a dealership. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand. My regular key works just fine.
- wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't understand. My regular key works just fine." Agreed
Newest is not always best. True techs know this. - piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what happens in 20 yrs when usb keys become obelete?
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, I'd definately buy it if it included a fingerprint scanner that was also required to start the car. USB key + fingerprint = teh win!
- piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0obsolete*
- jamisonfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome idea...
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can just see what happens when somebody hooks this into their computer and finds "password.txt" on the key.
- hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid idea... I work at a secured site and you can't bring USB drives in. Guess everyone in my profession can't drive Mazda's now since I can't take my car keys inside.
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why even bother with the USB key, but why not a bluetooth fob? similar to the prius.
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Key Gens for cars could easly be used. Most newer pocket pc's have very fast processors. Most come with a USB sync cable. Get in the car plug it in, scan for possible codes to pull model info or whatever to help with correct algorithm. Hell there probably be a diagnostic/service key code somewhere right? And who wants to update firmware on their car with the usb key to help keep it secure!
- notkevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0keygens for cars?
- Virus08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mazda should make a deal with apple and have ipod shuffle keys...
- Virus08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think they should abandon the cylinder key though... there should be a backup slot incase you cant the the usbkey for whatever reason
- The_Lance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they should just use fingerprint scans to start a car.. thats just the simplest and easiest way to go..
- Sagg, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0Massage the neck, Massage hands, Lumbar massage: http://traditional-medicine-traditional.blogspot.c ...
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a) This is a concept car.
b) Just because it's digital doesn't mean it would be hackable. There are secure protocols that could be utilized to prevent this from being easily stolen.
Simple example: The code that controls the firing sequence of the engine is stored in the system in an encrypted format. The USB key contains the key needed to decrypt that data. Therefore, without the key, the engine simply cannot run, unless you replace the Powertrain Control Module in the vehicle with another one.
So anyway, yes, with something like this, you can indeed make it harder to steal a car. If it's designed right. Not saying it is, but it's entirely possible. -
