- diggerdong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8rebates are like having sex with hookers. at first glance it sounds like a deal, but once you're through, you know you're *****.
- theevilshiftkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Take it from an IT professional, Maxtor sucks.
- tpstigers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, rebates tend to work. I've cashed in on hundreds (maybe thousands) of them, and I've never had a rebate fail to come through (although, truth be told, some of them have taken a notable period of time). Rebates work for manufacturers and dealers because they bet on the fact that most people are lazy and don't ever get around to sending the appropriate receipts in on time. Don't blame CompUSA because you can't be bothered to stuff two pieces of paper into an envelope and mailing it in a timely fashion.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2rebates suck.. frys has a 250gb maxtor ultra for $69.99 with no rebates.
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never used to think much about drive brands - until I had my 200 gig external baby (drive + firewire case) die after just over a year. I wont name the brand *cough*Western Digital*cough* - but when I checked out my warranty I realized that it sucked.
The important thing was that I made dang sure that my replacement drive had a decent warranty... one that would last longer than a year. Hard drives should not fail within a year - so what does it maen if a manufacturer wont even make that claim with their warranty? Chances are the drives suck. - ijonard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I worked for CompUSA for almost a year and the hate their customers. They will add things to your ticket without telling you and then at the end, when you are about to pay that there are mail in rebates. CompUSA has to be the last store on the planet that has you actually 'mail' in the rebates. If you put a single thing wrong on the rebate they will not give you your money. They won't tell you that you did something wrong, they just won't send you anything.
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That base price is horrible. It's over $30 more than what the drive sells for on newegg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take it from another IT manager -- Maxtor has had bearing problems resulting in error prone hard drives. The freezer tricks does work for Maxtor hard drives, if you want to spend your time trying to get your data back that way.
- tpstigers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For Christ's sake, children - calm down. $30 for a 100GB drive is a good deal, even if it fails to measure up to your (perceived) standards. You guys place way too much value on your own opinions.
- ImmortalSoldier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0300gb maxtor for $159 in Sams club no rebates
- Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree on the rebate issue....They do work if your willing to wait. This deal might not be the best use of it, but I've gotten so many good rebates. The best part is you start to forget you sent away for it and BAM, 100 bucks that you need is slipped through the mail slot.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Maxtor... better than WD, and $35 deliverd is a great deal"
*sigh*
Go ahead and make the purchase, and see if your credit card is charged $35. As you'll soon find out, your card will be charged $95.
In fact, the only thing known FOR CERTAIN about this purchase is that you'll be charged $95. (more if you have to pay local tax). What is FAR from certain is whether or not you'll receive the rebate check.
Here's some schooling for the naive: rebates ARE DESIGNED to FAIL. Why do you think they make you send in for them when they could just give you the price at the time of purchase? Why do you think so many people are screaming that 'rebates suck'? because they have a myriad of tricks and such that are designed to make you fail. And they can always just say they 'never received it' or that your check was sent but must've been lost in the mail.
The entire rebate industry is a scam. If that's not obvious to you, well i'll just say you're naive and leave it at that. - Titan615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had four Maxtor drives for around 5-2 years and so far they've been working fine. I personally think they are a fine brand. Also rebates aren't that bad. There is a reason why you send in a PHOTOCOPY of the rebate and the sales receipt. Makes life a hell of a lot easier and saves you a couple bucks. (also you can just ask for multiple copies from the store...)
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0though I always forget ot send them in my uddy says rebates are like bonus cash. You forget about them then seemingly out of nowhere comes a check in the mail. Could be that sixer you wishin you could afford
- hoowahman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dammit i just put together a rebate for 400 bucks from 50" plasma I bought last week. I really hope the damn thing doesnt get lost. Whats to stop these companies from just throwing away these things and saying "must have got lost in the mail". Maybe I should get insurance on it.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is how most of these stories go---
*insert comment about how i-knew-a-guy-who-had-one-and-it-died-type horror story, then recommend a brand*
*insert comment rebutting the above circumstance, and the brand*
*flame on* - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ummm 100 GB for $30 (even with the crappy rebates) = 30 cents per GB
The "OMG thats a good deal" rates are at 25 cents per GB (currently).
Plus 100GB is pretty small.... this is 2006 you know... - loomis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg. rebates suck, and you suckers who use them keep them popular.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eff rebates.
- longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh, i got a maxtor 200gb hard drive from staples on "black friday" for 69.99 then got a $40 check back from them in about a month
- lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they could give maxtors away and i wouldn't take one....the last maxtor i had lasted about a year.... the maxtor i had before that lasted about a year....it's like you are renting hdd space for a year...so 100 gb for 30 bucks a year sucks compared to a WD or a seagate for three times that much that'll last way way longer...i have an 8 gig WD that still works great
- FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is nothing wrong with maxtor. I have NEVER had a problem with any of my maxtor drives. I also love western digital, but I've had one of those burn out.
- paulrb02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I got this today, mine came with a free extra 20 gig, so yeah it was actually 120 gig pretty nice, just upping my home file server, ALSO the rebate can be done online so thats super easy and no postage
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"rebates = lame"
no...CompUSA rebates = lame
They are consistently the one place I never get rebates from. I don't even try anymore. I mean, I still get Best Buy rebates! man... - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maxtor sucks. The last time I touched a Maxtor drive, I had to have it replaced by Maxtor 4 times IN A ROW!!!! I would ship them a drive, they would ship me a new one, and it would be DOA! After the 3rd one I was really upset at having to PAY for the shipping costs on 3 drives that should have worked in the first place. So they upgraded me from a 40 gig to an 80 gig (Before it hit stores), AND they pre-shipped the 4th drive to me, and included a shipping lable so I would not have to pay to ship the 3rd DOA drive back. (They only did that after I lost my temper with them and told them off for shipping me 2 DOA drives in a row) However THAT drive only lasted 2 years before stopping with the most horrid sound I have ever heard from a hard drive! When I removed the drive, there was a dent on the top of it... made FROM THE INSIDE!!!!! o_0 Well I was SOL as it was out of warranty at this point. :( I have no idea HOW Maxtor stay's in buisness, they make the WORST drives on the planet, and they have the HIGHEST return rate of ANY ONE ELSE!
Rebates are a scam! They can reject your rebate for ANY reason, and you have no way to challange their descision. "You used black ink, and this rebate requires blue. Sorry you loose!" They are also hopping that your live is too busey to get that rebate sent in BEFORE it expires. That way you are stuck with their item, AND they do not have to pay you the $$$ that was the main reason you purchased the item anyway! Another reason that it is a scam is that they get the $$$ up front, but then they can take a few MONTHS to pay you back! They get to earn interest and such on YOUR money. I never purchase anything based on the rebate price, I look at the price BEFORE rebate, if it is good, then the rebate is a bonus if I manage to send it in... But if something comes up, and I do not get the rebate sent in, I still am happy with the deal I got.
The pre-rebate price sucks! I would rather get the referb Samsung 250 gig drives for $99.00 than this POS for $90.00 and then have to mess with a rebate! I have 4 250gig Samsung referb drives, and they work GREAT! Not a problem from ANY of them! - JjcampNR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome deal G.
- Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"rebates suck.. frys has a 250gb maxtor ultra for $69.99 with no rebates."
No it's actually a 200 gb not 250. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0100GB only...pass.
- kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also find Maxtor drives to be dodgy. I avoid them at all costs and would rather pay more for a better brand. Remember, you get what you pay for!
- CrustyOldman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0.
$30 plus $60 stupidity tax = $90 100GB Maxtor hard drive.
BFD.
. - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People who claim rebates suck are ones who are what we call lazy. Hell, im lazy, but when it comes to money, I dont mind throwing a receipt and a form in my mailbox to get a check sent back to me.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer Seagate, but I've never had a Maxtor HD fail. I picked up a 120gb Maxtor HD at OfficeDepot for $20 (got my rebate checks in the mail a couple of months ago). It's useful for storing vids, and that's all I use it for. If you want a good system-level HD, go Seagate. If you just want storage, get something else.
I can't comment on CompUSA because I don't shop with them, but if you follow the instructions **carefully**, you **WILL** eventually get your rebate money. That's how it works, because anything else is fraud and you're looking at a massive lawsuit.
So get off it. $30 for a 100gb drive ain't bad. - buckdog05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got a 300GB WD on Black Friday for $30, and just got a notification that the check's in the mail. I don't really care about the delay, I don't have anything pressing to spend my money on, and with the new online rebates (Staples, BestBuy, CompUSA), there's no chance of it getting "lost in the mail."
- palosheights, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0got a 200 gb maxtor from staples for 29.95 after 50 dollar rebate but.... staples rebates are all done online, you type in your receipt number on staples rebate site and then your rebate is sent to you in 2 to 4 weeks. already got my rebates after 4 weeks from the black friday sale. also, check out epinions before purchasing anything and i mean anything
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldnt touch a Maxtor hard drive
- Burner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got a 200gig maxtor for $30 on black friday at staples.

Name one such "massive lawsuit," please. Bad-faith rebates have never been uncommon, but I have never, ever heard of any legal action -- criminal nor civil -- against the perpetrators. Never.
Actually, the worst rebate hassle I've ever had was from CompUSA's eRebates, and it was just resolved this week. It was not bad faith, but simply due to a computer problem with their receipt records that resulted in them seeing my receipt as payment with no purchases. I stayed on it and got it squared away, but it was a remarkable hassle. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm that outpost HD doesnt look too bad. My sis needs a new hard drive for her computer to replace her 5GB drive.
- wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Costco rebates kick ass. Hit the web site, type in the receipt number, fill out address, and bam. Never had a problem. Everyone should do it this way.
Another IT pro's opinion. Most data recovery places will tell you that they see far more Maxtors than any other brand hard drive come through their service. But, I've yet to see real numbers on the numbers of Maxtors they see compared to the number sold, and let's face it. Maxtors are all over the place. In my own experience from building hundreds of systems over the years, Seagate drives are #1 in reliability. Maxtor and Western Digital tend to fail considerably more often. - Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a particularly good deal. Fry's beats this frequently, and with better drives. The last HD I got was a 120G Western Digital for $19 (after rebates) from Fry's. Better HD, better price. Yes, I got my rebates. I _always_ get my rebates because I submit them properly, scan all my documents and follow up religiously. People who whine about rebates are lazy and pathetic.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd hit it, but I don't feel like spending $30 at the moment. Not too bad for storage.
- mkillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6942302&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat33200050001&id=1099381238350
- Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't know why everyone is complaining about maxtor. where's your proof? nearly every drive i've ever owned has been a maxtor, and never once has a drive failed. i've never heard more complaining than i do on digg, all you people do is bitch.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy *****, people don't know how to find good deals. That's expensive as hell.
"Micro center had this same hard drive (PATA and SATA) at FREE after 70$ mail in rebate. This isn't big news."
Yep, I bought this hard drive a week or 2 ago at Microcenter. Sent in the rebate... still waiting. They have free stuff after rebate all the time. It's great, and the rebates have always came. Microcenter owns all. Hell, I don't even need a receipt to return my items there. Fry's and Comp USA suck compared to Microcenter. People, learn how to shop. This is NOT a good deal. - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maxtor is *****.
Spend money for a WD or a Samsung... something that will last you over 6 months. - mkillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best Buy has 250 gig hitachi drive for $89, no rebates.
- dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have a Maxtor 200 gig extrenal and i have no problems at all with it.
- Akiha_Tohno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What are the chances that there will be any of these left a few minutes after this had hit the frontpage and feeds?
- chiefwahoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg! The rebate is expired.
Look closer at the rebate from CompUSA, the deal was for a HDD bought between 1/15/06 and 1/21/06.
http://image.compusa.com/pdfs/0020801.pdf - CyberSmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do you think they make you send in for them when they could just give you the price at the time of purchase?
It prevents people from immediately reselling the said good to other markets - simple measure against self cannibalization - the store would be in competition with itself. They often make you bundle the UPC from the side of the box, essentially lowering the value for resale and making returns at other stores impossible. -
