- rowhard99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just bought 2x250gb Western Digitals for $104, woot.com
IT'S REFURBISHED!!!!! I'd stay away from refurbed hard drives!!!! - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very Nice.
Stay away from woot. They're 'deal's are usually refurbished drives that will only last a few weeks. - mfalkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Got this same drive at Fry's couple weeks ago at same price; just happened to stumble across it when there for something else. Worked alright so far, but I'm definitely going to back up the files on it ASAP just in case I end up another Maxtor horror story.

I've been coming to digg for about a year now. I didn't even bother with the front page for the longest time because I only visited a few sections (deals included) that had stories that interested me.
Like it was stated sometimes you don't know to look at other sites for deals or somebody has a promo code that's not listed on the company's site. Alot of times that's what it use to be about. Honestly, I wouldn't think to look at Staples because it's not a business I see in convienent locations in my area.
I always thought the deals section was a continuation of Kevin Rose's Dark Deals from TSS; you know, cheaper prices on computer tech in out of the way places, I could be wrong but that's what my impression was. - Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When did Digg become Fatwallet? I come here for tech stories, I go there for sales.
Anyway, my 2cents on Maxtor. I own and use at home around 30 HDs totalling close to 3TB on a daily basis. These drives consist of Maxtor, WD, Seagate, and a couple IBMs (yes, even the dreaded 75G Deathstar thats still working to this day). Most of my HD failures occur with Maxtor, then WD, IBM (pre-hitachi drives), and so far not a single Seagate has ever died on me (I know, just a matter of time). But my point is, in my experience, Maxtors seem to fail more often than the rest, but out of the 30+ HDs I have running, 1 dead Maxtor a year isn't too bad. Last year I lost 2 120G HDs, 1 was a Maxtor and 1 was a Western Digital. I still have half a dozen 120/160G Maxtors and another half dozen 120/160G WDs running without problems.
I do like the 5 year warranty Seagate offers. I got screwed on a Maxtor 320G that died 1 week past its 1 year warranty. That was a $400 HD when they first came out. I say buy from whoever has the longest warranty. I have been picking up 400GB Seagates for $150 now for close to a year at Fry's when they go on sale (usually once every 2 months) and couldn't be happier. 3 of those are in my Xbox and working flawless. - fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Out of stock.
- technstuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12 people mentioned woot.com, so I looked there, $50 for a refurb. PATA HD, blah.
- ephekt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you buy a refurbished Maxtor you deserve to lose your data... and probably will.
- silentbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i work at a staples, FYI for next week, in the presidents day sale ad theres a Maxtor 200gig PATA for $39.94 after instant savings and easy rebate.
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bought a Seagate 250GB SATA HD from zipzoomfly for $100, so this Staples sounded like it was good while it lasted.
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Out of Stock.
Maxtor Rocks. I have been using them for years - silentbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About half of the hard drives i've owen were maxtors and i have never had one die on me yet. I still have 40gig ones i bought 4 years ago still running in great condition. I was able to get one before they sold out, good deal, but there are better ones out there.
- wraithemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it says click here for canadian instructions. if you do and you search for that SKU or part (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=519271&affixedcode=WW) you will see it is $180 canadian. so i would like those deal posts to keep coming. although they should be placed in a particular section.
- brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Out of Stock
- _jinx_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@dazeweeble
Does it honestly belong on this site, are people to lazy to shop anymore and get prices for themselves, now your prolly going to throw back, well then why does digg exist ..why not just go all over the web to find your news... This is advertising in an annoying ( really beyond annoying )! Digg does not neccessairly have to be built based on technical intense indepth news or articles, but really how freaking hard is it to go to newegg since they have the best prices anyway and shop from them.
90% of the time I shop I go directly to newegg, find good deals on the homepage and call it a day, why does it have to be on digg aswell? - doafhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll never buy another Maxtor HDD ever again. I bought a PC from Dell just over a year ago, and it came equipped with a Maxtor HDD. Shortly after the warranty expired, the disk totally failed and I had to go buy a new drive. What's [tragically] ironic is that I was reading many of the comments here on digg from other users complaining about the quality of Maxtor hard drives and was considering buying a new drive just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, I was a little too complacent in thinking that I'd probably be safe in waiting a little while before buying a new drive, seeing how it was still fairly new.
I went to my local Staples, where they sold ONLY Maxtor drives. A sales clerk asked if he could help me, and I asked if they had a better selection of drives. Naturally, he takes me for a schmuck (who wouldn't?) and starts singing the praises of the Maxtor hard drives they were selling.
"Oh, I've had one of these for almost a year now, and it's never gave me problems," he says.
"Yeah," I replied. "You just wait a couple of months, and get back to me on that."
I shopped around other stores in town and then bought a Seagate HDD. Only time will tell, but hopefully my new drive will be a little more dependable. - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there seems to be an echo in these comments because half way through someone mentioned they were out of stock. Yet 20 comments down people are still stating the obvious, so im gonna jump on that bandwagon and do the same. OUT OF STOCK!!!
- _jinx_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats what I'm saying, deals on a site like this only makes it worse.. to me. Now if 51% VOTE for deals on digg thats cool, other wise get rid of the section as a whole. Everyone has there own opinion but it seems to me, those that starting using digg early back about a year ago.. enjoyed it the most when there wasn't all this spam on it.
- binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No rebates are cool but 25 cents per GB with higher drive capacities are just around the corner.
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ordered one for myself! Thanks for posting this. And a digg for you!
- MHKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg sold them out, NO DIGG.
- kuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks Digg, it's not OOS in my area.
- Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooops, sorry, my bad for my previous comment. I am still a little new to Digg and honestly didn't realize they had a "deals" section. I only look at the front page of digg and this was on it. It's the first time I have seen a "Deal" on the front page..
Still would be a good idea to have deals remain in that section and not on the front page as this type of stuff happens (comments, OOS very fast, etc). I think the majority comes here for stories and not deals. - JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just my 2 cents on maxtor drives: I've had a One Touch external 250 gig for over a year now which i'm basically in love with. It has been extremely reliable and I keep all of my data on there. I've also had a 40 gig running on an old system for nearly 4 years. I'm sure lots of people have had problems with maxtor drives, but that's probably not because they're made by maxtor. It's because hard drives in general are UNRELIABLE.
- wahooka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jinx
yes it does, as long as it's better than deals you can typically find. fyi this drive is $15 more on newegg.
newegg is cheap but they definitely are not always the cheapest.
deals means deals. i'm not sure realy what you think it means - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sold out. :(
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*click*
"That was easy" - techmaster7b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't a good deal at all. You can get hard drives that are better than this for roughly the same price. I bought a 250gb, SATA II, hard drive from tigerdirect.com two months ago for $88, with no rebates. Assuming that price changes do not occur in two months, which they do, that is only $19 more for 50gb more and for SATA II. Although SATA II does not really make a difference in real transfer, it doesn't hurt to have it.
By the way, if you don't have a tiger direct near your house, or don't want to pay shipping, just check other stores. There are plenty out there that sell cheap drives. Just because it isn't anouncced in the paper or online, doesn't mean that they don't have them on sale or cheap. - crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As I was ordering 2 of these bad boys,,, it went out of stock. LOL!
- rockindel1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SOLD OUT!!!
- minisu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could these cheap-hard-drive-stories have their own category please?
No digg. - drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same here, ordering 2, created account and it sold out by the time I got to the end. Oh well, I'll have to be faster next time.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh. I'm planning on 2 150GB Raptor's and 2 400GB Storage drives. That would be nice.
- wewa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I see a 'deal' post for Maxtor drives, I just keep going...
I have installed, supported, and used over 200 Maxtor drives in the past, from when they were 3 year warranty, until now, when they only give you 1 year, because they decided they needed to be honest about their quality and reliability.
I have RMA'ed and trashed over 40 Maxtor drives so far. At least their RMA turnaround shipping is prompt and fast. But often, their online warranty RMA page, is going to tell you that your warranty is expired, when its not. So you have to call and complain and bicker, until they give you the ok.
Now that they're being acquired by Seagate, its going to be interesting as to how good/bad these organizations products for the consumer is going to turn out...
I have clients who have lost photos of their children, no longer alive pets, vacations, legal PDF documents, MP3 music, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and more.
I no longer can, with good conscience, recommend Maxtor drives, for anyone, unless I wish them pain and suffering.
I consider using a Maxtor drive, equal to running a Windoze computer, with no Antivirus installed. A VERY BAD IDEA.
I, personally, have stopped using Maxtor, and primarily using Seagate, since they upped their warranty to 5 years (I never owned a Seagate for over 10 years until then, can you say 10MB RLL ESDI?).
I have seen reports from others about some external 300gb seagates going bad prematurely (amazon.com), but i personally, with about 20 late model seagates, do not have a single failure, ranging from 160gb, to 400gb drives, so far, that is.
Good luck! - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maxtor = crap
I've had 3 Maxtors that all died just outside warranty, compared to 8 WD's with only one failure and it was replaced with an advance shipment and I was back up and running within 3 days. - dgcrazykid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never got to see the new add for this week. I am going to have a lot of people asking me for one. too bad for them. I called in to my store and they told me that they are sold out and teh WHS is sold out...
- cypre$$, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know why everyone is bashing Maxtor. I have had one of their drives for over a year and a half and it has given me no problems. My friend swears by Maxtor, he has 3 computers each with 2 drives and they are all maxtor, and non of them have given him problems. On the other hand, my 40 gig Western Digital died after one year.
+Digg, I ordered mine this morning. - mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Woot sucks. Enjoy your Refurbed Hard drive.
- 511pf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The same drive is on Newegg for $85 right now. The $15 difference doesn't make it that great of a deal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got a Maxtor 200 gig about a year ago from Office Depot online for $90.00 total. This doesn't seem like that great of a deal, but it's decent none the less.
- ray023, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OUT OF STOCK! :(
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IRT Ace 25:
Please note that there is a "Deals" section of Digg. "Deals" as in "Where to get cheap tech stuff." Which is where this story was. It is too bad that there are so few stories in the "Deals" section; normally when one is posted there it is killer.
IRT Woot:
I saw that today, too. But that is a 5400 RPM PATA 100 drive, with only a 2GB cache. And it is a refurb. So, other than for storing all your pr0n and MP3s (the ones you don't care about) it isn't very useful. Refurbished hdd = discount bungee jumping equipment. - dazeweeble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are people getting pissy about a "deal" submitted to digg.com's "deals" section. This is a "technology" focused site, not "technical" and the last time I checked computer hardware is very much so technology.
- pullshot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can always Price Match stuff to http://www.staples.com/ They are the best with Rebates!!!
- 6dust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Odd that nobody is mentioning the aquisition here...
In case you hadn't heard, Seagate is acquiring Maxtor. This could be a good deal in that if your drive does die, it could be replaced with a Seagate! - IKbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To move away from the "spam!", "sold out!", and "maxtor sucks!" comments...
Anyone have any recommended hardware solutions for a barebones home storage server.
I figure I can get 10 WD 320GB drives for ~$120 a pop, hook up 2 sets of 5 to two raid cards, do a raid-0 on the processor, and serve it up to my home network. That's really cheap for ~2.5TB.
My question is about the rest of it. I want to spend as little as possible on a fast system, two opposing needs. I also don't want to mod a case that much to fit the 10 drives.
I guess I'm talking about a case/psu/MoBo/cpu/ram setup that would be ideal.
Any ideas? - Zoplax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maxtor SUCKS.
- ctheory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cheers, thanks for the heads up on the deal.
- mckinnej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had all brands of drives fail with pretty much equal distribution. In a nutshell, if it doesn't have a 3-year warranty, don't f**k with it. Those drives you see in the plastic boxes at Walmart and other retailers, in a word, suck. Get something the manufacturer is willing to stand behind for a respectable time period. That is, unless you enjoy losing data.
- rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg. Staples was runing a similar sale on this drive back in late November/early December, except that it was just the drive for $70. I bought one and it crashed within a month. I got it replaced and the replacement promptly crashed about a month ago. 2 crashes in 2 months. This drive is crap.
