- PhairOh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For some reason, I just can't see this as being a legitimate claim. If match.com has over 15 million subscribers it would be impossible for them to set up these fake dates for even 1% of their subscribers, over 150,000 people, especially with a work force of only 250.
I suppose you could argue that they have 250 official employees and these other fake dates are unofficial employees and are kept off the books, but even then, how many could they possibly have to make it financially sound? Especially since if they got caught doing this, they would absolutely know that something like this (lawsuits, public outcry, canceled memberships) would happen. Not to mention the fact that if they were caught they would get audited and someone would ask questions about the payments to the thousands of non-employees.
As far as I can tell from the article, there's only 1 guy complaining about match.com as of right now. I have a feeling that this guy got burned by using match.com, which is not unbelievable in the world of relationships (especially blind dating), and wants some payback. - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Match.com CEO: "I think it would be a good idea to whore-out our employees in order to raise stock prices." They have no soul...
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK so everybody is trashing Match.com because some guy somewhere said that some girl said that she was an employee of Match.com? That's all it takes to convince you people? I mean, does anybody even have a copy of the complaint to read or anything other than taking a news article on the internet at face value?
Even taking what the guy says as true - that he went out on a date with a girl that turned out to be a Match.com employee, does that mean that Match.com has a policy that sends it's employees out on dates with its customers? That is a hell of an assumption as is assuming that the profiles are fake. Both his claims may very well be true, but damn, how about a little objectivity. I see no evidence whatsoever that the profiles are fake and that employees are required to go on dates with clients other than the word of some random guy that got dissed by a girl on a date. - soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just cancelled my membership. ***** match.com.
- mentallo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats sucks. Me and my girlfriend met on Match.com and we have been toether for over 1 1/2 years now. I guess now I gotta probe her and see if she is really just a Match.com employee. Damn, and it was going so well.
- LeeVal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dam so that russian girl wasnt real
She did seem a bit off - wyngnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Been on all the dating websites.
Just a gut feeling is that the ratio from women to men is around 10 to 1 (if not worse). This obviously inflates the egos of the women on there, because they easily get 25 contacts a day (from speaking to women who have used the service).
To further add insult to injury, Yahoo definitely fakes ads. If you do a wide enough geographic search on a very specific type of girl, you can find her picture attached to 5 different profiles. I noticed that the fake profiles are very vague in who they are looking for (shock).
And I haven't even gotten into the quality of women who are real....Now thats a story in itself...
Online dating is screwed. - ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man...that's just mean.
- moose_diggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure this was all set up by that old bahstid from Eharmony.
I get all my onling poon from HOT or NOT.. I usually pick up on the NOT's they are much easier.
Dont Hate!!! - markusff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I run Plentyoffish.com all by myself. The site is bigger then all free and paid sites combined in canada and the 7th largest of all dating sites in the USA according to hitwise.com
Fraud is rampent in the dating industry, yahoo has a bazillion users from russia that come in and milk millions from members. All they need to do is put up a IP block, but like that will ever happen.
Nearly all the paid sites seem to send out fake winks and emails to members to try and get them to convert to paid. A little research and you'll easilly be able to find the most obvious abusers.
http://www.badbusinessbureau.com/reports/ripoff142721.htm The link above is to a former online Ambassador who describes exactly what her job entails. The instant she accepted the job the site sends out hundreds of potential subscribers telling them she is interested in them and she has to reply to them.
Here is a job posting for a "online Ambassador".
Title: Online Ambassadors
Location: Work from home. Anywhere in North America.
Schedule: Schedule: Flexible. 15-20 hours/week.
Pay: $1100 for 6 weeks.
Are you a sociable person who loves to meet new people online? Do you have a home computer? If you answered yes to these questions, you can earn nearly $200/week working just a few hours each day on your own time.
Mate1.com needs Online Ambassadors from all North American locations. If you are over 18 years of age, outgoing, courteous and can type reasonably quickly, you can do this work in no more than 15-20 hours per week, at home.
Your mission would be to communicate with our members by internal Mate1 email with a view to familiarizing them with the web site and making them feel a part of the greater Mate1 community. Your work would consist solely of replying to emails from Mate 1 members. The ideal candidate will have some experience with or interest in online dating. - mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. What a scam. Faking interest in people who sign up for those services is terribly dishonest.
- aliensporebomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What if she just SAID that to get out of a date
from hell with a saliva excreting maniac?
I can see it now:
Guy: Blurble Bloop Dribble! You're hawt!
Female: (Yecch!) I'm a paid employee of match.
Guy: WOT?
Female: Go away, you drooling catastrophe.
Guy: (Blink) I'LL SUE!
Female: (That excuse worked, next). - loki49152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call absolute BS on the guy suing match.com.
I worked for a "sister company" of match.com for over three and a half years. As a perk of employment, everyone employed at math.com and any of its sister companies can get a free 6-month subscription to the match.com service.
Now, over three and a half years at a related company, you'd think that if this was actually going on there might have been rumors about it, at the very least. No. Until this article popped up, I hadn't even heard it whispered that match.com might actually do something like that. Not even as a joke. Not even from disgruntled employees.
This guy is a loser, and/or an ass. Obviously, because he's suing over this.
No, I am no longer paid by any company related to IAC (InterActive Corp, which owns Match.com and its sister companies). If they want to send me a check, I'll cash it, but I haven't worked for them for nearly a year now. - antifuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So??? Did they put out or what?
- fw12fw12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now Match is saying that they've gotten the employee to sign an avidavit that she was never and employee. Yeah right.
Isn't that too easy. If anybody brings up an allegation against a giant like Match that seriously damages its reputation, do you really believe that all Match would do would be to get the person to sign an avidavit? No way, it'd be more like suing the pants off that woman.
The case of her signing an avidavit just means she's been bribed with a few millions to keep here quiet. Scams will never end. Support the free sites: oasisoflove.com. - Dicknose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those poor devils! Their minds were too clouded by horniness to realize that internet dating is a CASH MILL. If you want to get rich quick, start your own online dating site. If you want to meet some really nice women, check out craft stores like Michael's. The place will probably have 50 people in in, and you're the only guy there. :-D
- john1007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can you tell that a photo on an online dating site is fake? I just registered as a paying member at http://www.hornymatches.com. They are now refunding my money. Here's the strange thing about joining this site. Before I paid to join, I would get at least 2 e-mails a day from women wanting to chat. Of course, I could not reply to them inless I paid first. Since I was getting so many e-mails before I subscribed, I figured I would pay just so I can reply back. I only paid for one month of their service, which was $24.99. So after I paid, I replied to each girl that sent me mail before I paid. Not one of those girls will send me back a reply now and they are on everyday. From the looks of it, from my point of view, either these girls don't exist or they work for the company. Anyway, I sent e-mail to support of that site and they replied saying they will refund me. How can you spot a fake profile? I also got ripped off by http://www.americansingles.com as well in the past. The samething happen to me there as well. I sent women e-mail that were online that very minute and they never replied.
- zbowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its such bull. This got thrown out almost over night. Can't believe it got press. Match.com (my former employer) sued these people so bad...
- spnashville, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, the best completely FREE personals website yet to be discovered is none other than http://www.myLoveToGive.org
Look why pay so much to these high paying sites and their CEO's.
Love is for FREE. Isn't it. - DirtyCash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or skip the whole website thing and go outside somewhere. I know Blasphemy (-_-)zzz
- Cathy4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! Why am I not shocked by this. Their are now so many sites out there which cater to the single community why even bother with Match any more?
I just discovered a secret code that will give you a fully paid one year account on MatchActivity (http://www.matchactivity.com/ )
The code is: SAL19 - Stormlor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL I knew this would rain on their parade. Match and Yahoo both are money grabbing personal sites. They are not hoping you get a realtionship, not even a date so they can put up more profiles so you would pay more money for it. I'm glad I left both Match and Yahoo years ago. I found my girlfriend of EHarmony. While I don't agree with EHarmony's system (its all random) so far its worked the best for me.
- Sheriffs1780, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0Match.com sucks. Messing with peoples heads like that. Makes you feel sad for the singles that are truly seeking love. Try http://www.thebadge.org. It's another 100% free dating site.
- Ciribirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow! I can't believe you spammed us with that BS Cathy4u!
And Match.com is still up to there dirty tricks. I just put up the most goofy profile, "I like air. Fish are fun." and the most stupid picture I could find and I immediatly got winks from "women" who's pictures were clearly taken out of magazines or are stock photos. - fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha I wrote the SOAP service that tells TRUE.com if someone is a convicted felon or is married. http://rapsheets.com
- ewhac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had a Match.com account since shortly after its inception. When they went to monthly subscription fees, they grandfathered in all the charter accounts, so I've had a fully-functional free account there for about ten years.
I can count the number of dates I've had from Match.com on one hand.
Recently, I've started receiving what are clearly fake emails expressing "interest", mostly from Yeah-Who accounts. They almost universally have atrocious spelling and grammar. I don't think they're shills for Match.com, but they might be shills from other matchmaking sites, or from more garden variety scamsters.
Recently I've taken to responding to these fakes with the following, in the hopes they'll confuse the charlatans:
setsockopt(): SIOCGIFCONF: Invalid parameter (connection reset)
Schwab - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LMAO...duh people! You believe those pictures they show when a couple looks happy are authentic??
- gyrfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think these lawsuits have much of a case. From everything I could tell, Match.com seems to be one of the better on-line dating sites. True.com is bad though!!! They create fake users and send out bait emails like a lot of scummy dating sites do.
- sjors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is certainly a market for on line dating, but i think its wiser to find dates on Community sites rather than on dating sites.
- nickstang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also 'grandfather'd' an account from an early beta tester that received a free for life account. My statistics are as follows 34 sent emails 4 received. 2 of which were telling me that I was not a match. Funny, they were in almost the exact format. Granted, I have only been on here for about 3 weeks, but have not received even interest. However,.... I did go out on a date on my first contact with someone on match.com, but as online dating goes,.. you can take 100 good pictures of someone and end up with one decent looking one. So was the case with my acne ridden date. Yes, her mother put her on anti-depressants at age 5 and meeting her at age 25 is telling.
After reading the yahoo article I have sent out a ton of emails as a test with my email address 'encoded' and asking for a reply... hopefully X members will be able to receive and respond. So far,.. it's been a waste of my time. I'll report back with findings. I'm not a terrible looking guy and do have a personality, maybe I do. - burthahotel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow that is bad. forget match.com
- saifrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How great is it that Yahoo! News is reporting allegations of fraud committed by Yahoo! Personals?
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's all about www.dotmate.com ;)
- chiapet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 kajoob (true dat)
- eroctech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not shocked at all.
I have heard of positive stories coming from Match.com but for me, I say nay.
happy hunting... - jonti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Onliine dating software is naff.
Adult contact websites are strangely similar to the sites for jobseeker -- forms to fill in, details to be revealed to unknown strangers. Databases are scanned for matches, and application forms are produced for perusal. But adult contact websites are strangely similar to the sites for jobseekers. In either case, there are forms to fill in, details to be revealed to unknown strangers. Databases are scanned for matches, and application forms are produced for perusal. That's nothing like how it's done in the real world.
What you really need is a purpose built morg...
... see johntucker.biz/blog.html - dotcommunist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so do you think they made the guy sucker pick up the dinner tab too?
- Shadowsnake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sucks for all the people on match
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rofl
- vannyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i used match once , til i found out that even if i contact a non paying member they cant reply and if they want ot reply they ahve to pay. And they dont let you know ahead of time if the person is a member or not.
- ferrum999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, the best completely FREE personals website yet to be discovered is none other than OKCupid http://www.okcupid.com/
It has a really good matching system to based on a clever question/answer scheme. It also has some funny tests like what % slut you are, hahah. I'm only 31% thus far, so step right up ladies! - Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol too bad for those losers.
- Starlight7, on 04/21/2008, -0/+0I had good luck with Match. True was worthless though and eHarmony initially rejected me. When I finally did get into eHarmony, I wasn't very impressed with the other members and went back to Match.
- mpc72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And this is surprising in what way exactly?
- MaxCase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so not a surprise. The only online d-service I came across that was decent non-scammy was the Nerve.com network, but unfortunately, thats' been sold off...
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll stick to meeting chicks the old fashioned way: Hanging out in front of psychiatric units and rehab clinics.

- selloutvixen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In Match.com's defense, my brother and his new wife (married a month ago) met on Match.com. It's not a bad site.. people do meet actual awesome people.. you just need to weed out the jerks/crazies. It's definitely easier doing on the internet than in a bar, that's for sure.
I met my boyfriend on hotornot.com. Laugh all you want, he's awesome and we've been dating now for almost 3 years. Best 6 bucks I ever spent. So, why is online dating a bad thing again? Let me ponder that whilst I enjoy my "loser" relationship. Right. In 6 months, you'll be doing it, too. - freedating, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Free Manhattan Speed Dating, Free white-collar workers club!
