They're also carefully excavating and moving the graves beneath the statue. The Russians want you to think the statue is being destroyed, but that's completely false!

First attempt at a Soviet Russia joke that could've been epic and you manage to ***** it up.

- angrycat, on 10/11/2007, -11/+24They're MOVING the memorial to a cemetary for red army soldiers. That's much more civilized than the Soviets that DESTROYED estonian memorials remembering their victory against the russians in some previous war, and replacing them with their own.
The fact that they're protesting this disgusts me. Russians are such dirty pieces of ***** it makes Hitler look wonderful. - lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19I wish I could digg your reply a hundred times, angrycat...
The Russians are unhappy that they are moving a memorial to soldiers that rape, pillaged, and committed genocide against the Baltic states. Cry me a river. If they weren't communists, I'd call them a bunch of fascists.
Being of Lithuanian descent, this whole episode makes me nervous... The Russians under Putin are looking for some of their old glory. It wouldn't surprise me if they were to invade again at some point. NATO is keeping suspiciously quiet about this whole affair. I think that if they did invade, NATO would protest, then protest again, but not much else. It would not be a good thing.
The russian people have had little to crow about in the years since communism fell... I can see some turbulent times ahead in this area. I hope the baltic states are gearing up their military.
Thanks,

You could not be more dead on. I think everybody deserves a good history lesson and read about Molotov Ribbentrop Pact (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov-Ribbentrop_Pact) in which Nazi Germany and Communist Russia divided up the Eastern Europe between themselves. Estonia was supposed to remain under Russian rule, whereas Poland 'belonged' to Germany. Comparing this to Iwo Jima is ridiculous.
By the way - Estonia was "liberated" by Russians 2 days _after_ the Germans had left the country and Estonia had declared independence again. Followed with deportation of some 30'000 people to Siberia, where my grandfather and his 2 sons left their lives. Thanks a lot, Russian "liberators", I "owe" you one...No, three at least... - kahlessreborn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9It was Probably digg since we take down almost any server that makes it to the front page.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10of course, russia is behind this cyber-attack...no one else has a motive to do this to estonia.
as someone with partial russian ancestry, i say, please get over this, russia. no one is dishonoring your sacrifice and valor in helping to destroy the third reich. if that's where the story ended, the estonians would probably have a few monuments of their own to honor russian soldiers...but no, after the war, ***** stalin claimed half of europe as booty and proceeded to kill 50 million of his own countrymen. the ussr kept eastern european and baltic people enslaved for decades. the scars are still there...do you expect no hard feelings after raping all these nations for so long?
be grateful the estonians don't spit and piss on this monument. other nations would do worse under the circumstances...don't push your former 'comrades' too hard...it will be your own downfall (again).
p.s. you'd better stop hating and start procreating over there...you're almost an extinct people (thank stalin for that). - gerbil20, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8May be the monument to russian war dead should be in russia, as opposed to Estonia which views russians first and foremost as occupiers who enslaved and pillaged their country for 50 years? Just a though.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Commander: Warning: Soviet Russia has just launched a preemptive DDOS attack on Estonia
General: You dont mean...??
Commander: Im afraid so. We will be feeling the repercussions of the Russian Reversals all the way up to the east coast. - ahto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8And maybe the monument was not "torn down", maybe it was just relocated to a war cemetery where it fits a little better. Maybe. And maybe it's just Estonian internal business anyways and attacking another sovereign country (be it cyber or non-cyber) should count at least for terrorism, if not an act of war. Maybe.
- ahto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7SickFinga,
Not quite as many as you would like to think. Majority of those measures were 'wasted' during the Asian/Russian crises of the 1998 when almost one third of Estonian imports/exports were Russian-oriented. But as that crises proved - Russia is not a country to rely on, so what happened was that Estonian trade reoriented more towards Western European countries (helped by the accession to EU), so now less than 10% depend on Russia. Estonian economists put the actual 'expected' damage percentage around 3% or so of the GDP. But this can just be considered the Russian tax we have to pay every 5 years or so just to remind ourselves that Russia is not our friend and never will be. I am willing to pony up my share as long as money is the only thing at stake here.
As said before - Russia f's more their own countrymen than ethnic Estonians by doing everything that they are doing now (stopping all rail transit, shutting down main bridge in Narva, pulling all Estonian products from the shop shelves and posting "no Estonian merchandize" signs etc.), because the main benefiters from the East-oriented trade are ethnic Estonian Russians. Pity, but Russia really does not give a rats ass about you. Talk about the great democracy of the motherland... - ahto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I would agree with your post 100%, only after these minor corrections:
- "removed" = "replaced to a cemetery with full civilian and military honors"
- "statue commemorating the defeat of Hitler" = "statue to an unknown soldier"
- "They are claiming that they were on his side" = "They are claiming that they were occupied by Nazi Germany, only to be outdone by Soviet Russia which occupied them twice, with the latest occupation ending finally in 1992"
- "They get what they deserve" = "Kuvaldin is a prime example of Russian nashist/nazist and a reason why Russians are so much despised outside their borders" - Niallgriff, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9why digg this guy down? He seems to know what he is talking about better than us. And you dugg the guy making the retarded "i'm in yer serverz" joke up 19?

- fuutott, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4There is a joke similar to this:
Question to Radio Erewan:
Is it true that they give out free mercedeses on red square in moscow.
Answer
True, but with corrections, Not in moscow but in leningrad, not mercedeses but bicycles, no giving for free but stealing - Zique, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Ridiculous, Russia is like an angry child getting a temper tantrum. And even further so, EU completely shames itself by not doing anything but wagging its finger at Russia.
- kocharoches, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5it always seems that the most intellectually challenged get the most diggs. it is quite obvious who grew up in an overly privileged home and who didn't. if they digg up rape jokes and condone the brutally oppressive Russian regime they are just showing their blatant ignorance. fadeout-that's for you.

- ahto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4And US is a country of 1.3 million people with a hostile neighbor 100x its size across the border meddling with business that by all standards is Estonian _internal_ issue? You ever looked into which countries are still in the "coalition of willing" fighting side-by-side with the US in Iraq and Afghanistan? I think we are doing it because we just are too stupid and/or stubborn to realize that if ***** hits the fan, US and NATO would not back us up anyways (which they actually do, but by your standards they should not).
Thanks for the support, mofo. - SickFinga, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6It's true, Russia not gonna send military to Estonia. But there are a number of ways that Russia can strangle Estonia economically.
- Grouser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The reason I can't submit my homework is because of this damn Russian DDOS attack.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Dear US: Please wake the ***** up already!
While you were completely preoccupied with the ridiculous make-belief hobgoblin of "islamofascism" (consisting of, at most!, a couple of hundred thousand unorganized if fanatically religious arabs armed with improvised weapons, so weak they're even unable to overthrow the corrupt, weakling, local governments) an empire which considers itself your enemy, which has 150 million inhabitants, 3 million trained soldiers, 20 goddamn nuclear subs, 10000 nuclear weapons, 50000 tonnes of chemical and biological weapons, *and* the capability to deliver those weapons to the US, *and* a proven willingness to use force to reach its goals, have risen.
If that doesn't sound scary, try this: that empire is a dictatorship flush with cash from oil and gas, governed by the mafia, and has the key member states of the EU (notably Germany and France, but also to a significant degree Britain) in its pocket. Which also means that Russia now control the UN security council.
It's not like Russia strong-arming neighboring countries, even going to war against them, or murdering journalists and oppositionals, is a NEW phenomenon - they've been doing this for the last several YEARS, only the US hasn't noticed, because it's been too preoccupied with the domestic politics surrounding the "war" against a numerically inferior band of goatherds armed with AK47's and improvised weapons in a middle-eastern desert!
But hey, at least Russia & Putin is on the US side against the hobgoblin of "islamofascism", right? Wrong.

...and the warlord he's installed as president of Chechnya is an islamist who wants to introduce sharia:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/02/AR2007030201500.html
Take a good, strong, look at Russia. In case you've been staring too long at the manufactured, intended-for-domestic-use threat of "islamofascism": THIS is what an actual threat to US lives, US security, and US interests, looks like. *These* guys could do a hellovalot more than plant old artillery shells under banana boxes next to your patrol roads, so FFS start taking them seriously!
Sorry for ranting, but the fact that the US is ignoring *real* threats due to its bizarre fixation/mass-psychosis on the mostly imaginary threat of "islamofascists" just annoy the heck out of me. - f00xx0riz3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1.. USA.
- mookieXL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It won't. Skype is P2P.
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Yeah, and on the 14th and 19th you'll fill up your SUV with 25 gallons of premium unleaded.
- asaone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You will have more and more state sponsored attacks on other countries to hone there skills in a cyber war. North Korea, Iran, Russia , China, Cuba and others represent a threat to the Internet.
- Sanooj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I really hope this situation doesn't escalate to anything more serious. I have family up there and am planning on going back next summer. It'd be terrible to see Russians destroy the peace we finally have there.
- gerbil20, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dude, have you got this one wrong!
Egypt is not overrun by islamofascists because its government uses a good part of its Uncle Sam's allowance ($2B annually) to drive Islamofascists into the ground. A commendable effort. Same with Pakistan. Saudi Arabia, and Syria pay truckloads of protection money for a semblance of being left alone, and Lebanon's government is purely Islamofascist.
"Does that sound like a credible threat to the continued survival of the US, much less to "western civilization""
Only because Israel is presently taking all the heat (both from Islamofascists and "western civilization"). Once it is gone down, we all are next.
P.S. I am not American. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"Islamofascism is a lot more powerful than you think."?
Dude, they're so weak they've tried and *failed* to overthrow the governments of Algeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, and even Lebanon, which hardly even HAS a government. That's how weak they are.
They have no empire (not even really any country), they have no nukes, no bioweapons, no nuclear subs, no ICBM's, no armor, no airforce, no financial muscle, no influence over any major player in the world, and they're inferior in numbers to the US army *even inside Iraq*. Does that sound like a credible threat to the continued survival of the US, much less to "western civilization"?
Yeah, they're nasty pieces of work, yeah, they can and do kill individuals and deliver pinpricks, and yeah they should be smacked down - but they're not a credible threat to US security or US interests. They're a propaganda-enemy for domestic use, a hobgoblin to menace the US civilian population with and justify continued enormous defense spending after Soviet collapsed. - kodek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Then they'll bitch to bring back the admins from the datacenters. :P

SickFinga: u just reading wikipedia articles or u know something yourself also smaraas? We all know who is running this KC site - that's why they can public what they want, they are not afraid. Take these Estonian subject articles there (i say ESTONIAN subject) and prove me they are full of lies and nonsense? (except the FSB armed terrorist thing - what was based on some delusional russian movement letters what they send to our government, hopes to scare them, silly commies. But its just so funny Russians try to scare us like this).
And La Russophobe is racist web page? U know the meaning of this word? I think they are to far left some times (what may be anoing), not a racist. They criticize russia because russian fascism and rassism (like killing negros on front of police station etc)
These are alternative information sources, where from u get information what is not published regularly other sites. This is not some proved news site, but of course i am sore u would be unable to understand from this sites what is worth reading and what is not. I would call this person half-way informed who would ONLY read KC and LA Rus or who would take 100% every article as and cold. Tatswhay other people has a brain, to filter the information.
I only can tell You that news about Estonia has been on these sites better covered then any of other news portals (delfi.ee is also good sometimes).
And there does not exist group of terrorists who would be able to kill as many people on 100 years as communist/russian fascist have killed and will kill in future.
But i haven't NEVER seen lies like russian newspapers write and national tv there (of course i am not reading most of KC and La Rus).
Or even take the Fox - one of the world biggest news network - you would only trust them?
So nice try :P
---
& for specially stupid, i must repeat: these 2 websites was not meant to be as news sources for every kind of news. One is a blog other is run by u know u, jeesh! - gerbil20, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2a) Islamofascism is a lot more powerful than you think.
b) USSR is a good enemy because at the very least it acts predictably.
Given the choice I'd prefer to have the world ridden of Islamofascists, but if we can have two for the price of one, I say go for it. - WaffaDrunker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0lol, is that way NATO was coming to estonia, and sayd they see this kind of thing first time? there hasent been so massive 3+ week attack against all one gov networks by other gov before in history. there was more bots/computers attacking estonia then we have estonians in estonia lol. Ofcourse, if million computers attacks USA gov - its not so big deal, but it is for estonia. And yes, u would need probabaly bigger attack to just get ofline one mayor USA banking system - but this is not the point :P
- abcdefghij, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Please, instead of the Soviet Russia reversal, allow me to offer you something different..
In Soviet Russia, Chuck Norris once roundhouse kicked the blatantly ignorant, overly-privileged, oppressive regime.. overlords! - SickFinga, on 10/11/2007, -11/+11WaffaDrunker, your references are just a bunch of racist websites.
1. Russophobe. Don't need to be a genius to realize how biased that website is by just looking at the website's name.
2. KavkazCenter, for those of you who don't know. KavkazCenter is a news website of Chechen terrorist. Same terrorist that killed hundreds of children during Beslan School hostage crisis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kavkaz_Center
Nice try though.
