- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -19/+84Funny, I found a podcast in the iTunes Music Store about how to kill Mark Cuban.....weird...
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -50/+110Mark Cuban is an idiot.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47He got his start by being an Internet entrepreneur. He knows a thing or two about how to treat customers (look at the Dallas Mavericks - he took them form zeros to a huge team - and they are top five in fan experience for ever year since he took over) He owns a large section of Lions Gate films, HDnet, and 2929 entertainment. I have dealt with his high ranking employees on the film side of his operations (even had one as a professor). He invested in HDnet not for the revenue or the movies it shows, but for the chunk of bandwidth it encompasses. Owning an HD network = a lot of bandwidth straight to consumers - and when the market starts to shift, he could sell that to... say, Apple for content distribution for their 4th generation iTV....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Digg Posters never give the real article...what the hell are people thinking. The actual article in question is Mark Cuban's own blog, here.

- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"MSFT is all about baby steps in the wrong direction."
haha. what a funny image - sporkmonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"and with eMusic you can pretty much put that on any player minus the iPod and the Zune"
Uhm? eMusic songs work with any MP3 player... including the iPod and the Zune. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17@ TheReport
Other companies have done much better than the Zune. Your facts are pure *****.
And MSFT designed "playforsure" to be the answer to multipule players and multiple services - then they didnt use it themselves. This isnt an isolated event, this is how MSFT does business. Asking them to change this one lil support issue is asking them not to be MSFT. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Mark is a smart guy, he runs his multiple companies with great intuition and knowhow - The problem is he isn't tied down and old like MSFT. Cuban makes large decsions with full confidence. MSFT is all about baby steps in the wrong direction.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13When you have to watch 5 minutes of advertising every 20 minutes of game-time!
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13And when will Mark let people watch the Dallas Mavericks play for free?
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@ TheReport
If you know Mark Cuban then you know that he isn't riding the coat tails off one acquisition.
The business that he has started with the money off of broadcast.com's have been profitable. They have been making money and he has been investing. If you read what I wrote about HDnet - it isn't very profitable right now, but in the future, it has much potential. Cuban has the eyes to see a lot like that that many people don't.
Also @TheReport - you seem to have edited your question regarding my Identity to say "...." rather than
"@ Thinkbox
Are you Mark Cuban?"
To answer your, now, unasked question...
I'm not him, I'm just a Dallas guy who has had some business contacts with him on the film side. I know some of aids and took classes about film exhibition and distribution from one of his men. I know a good bit about the way he runs his businesses and the choices he makes in media distribution. I think he makes a lot of smart moves and many people miss them. And this story isn't even linking to his blog - where the real story resides.
http://www.blogmaverick.com/2006/12/12/googlenomics-itunes-and-zune/
(many below have linked to this as well) - taxonimous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Ad supported models are all well and good but I can't see the revenue coming close to what Apple get from charging currently which would make it a tough sell within the companies. Personally I would be much happier using itms if
- the music was more fairly priced (not necessarily as allofmp3 but better than is now)
- no DRM - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He got where he is today by being bullish and being right.
(and dont tell me he got where he is by selling braodcast.com that's not what I'm talking about).
Cuban did a lot with his mone, investing it in businesses, sports teams, film companies, and HD tv channels. He has done well in each of his endevors. - systemghost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I still want my flying car.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If the radio played the music I liked, I would listen to it. The reason I dont listen to the radio isnt because of ads (I still watch TV) - its because they are so controlled by the media companies to produce clones - If you are in a band you cant produce long songs - it just wont get played on the radio. I am friends with several professional musicians - They all complain about picking singles for their albums because they have to edit them and rework them in length for radio play. The radio sucks because the RIAA and those involved with it sucks.
Everyone involved in the promotion of artists and radio syndication of music is in a circle sucking each others dicks. You ever wonder how "musicians" get popular? Because the radio tells people so - that's why.
Radio sucking has nothing to do with ads. Ads do not affect quality content. - verticaltheory, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9As much as I can appreciate Apple IPOD owners and ITUNES users alike, I've been a Yahoo Music subscriber since they launched.
Why? Because for 5 bucks a month I can download all the music I want both to my PC and for 5 more dollars to my Creative Zen MP3 player. No per song fees. No 30 second clips - you get the full song.
Now I know many will reply whining that this includes Microsoft's DRM. Which is fair statement - but the same can said for Apple's DRM restrictions.
If someone really wanted to burn Yahoo Music to a CD or transfer it to their IPOD there's always FairUse4WM.
Yeah yeah I know Apple has the market share both in terms of their player and music store - but isn't it funny how when the tables are turned and Apple is the big dog instead of MS, suddenly it's only cool to have the same MP3 player as the rest of America, or only "logical" to use the music download store the masses use?
Yahoo's subscription service really is the one (of many) of the most underrated options for music lovers. The more you use it and rate your music, the more they start adding similar artists and new material from existing artists from your collection.
Yes, there were many issues when it first came out regarding the client software. However, the new Yahoo Music *Jukebox* version is MUCH more stabler and easier to use, especially with Yahoo's Launchcast Radio service...
I'm sorry but I download at least somewhere between 100-300 tracks (10-30 albums) a month - the idea of paying $100-$300 bucks a month for the same amount of music that I'm currently paying $10 a month for, JUST TO HAVE AN IPOD is ridiculous!
I know subscription means you don't own the music TECHNICALLY - but the trade for someone like me who isn't rolling in cash is worth it.
Also, everyone so busy talking about Apple's success and marketshare that they forget about the small guys BESIDES Yahoo and the other subscription competitors...
If you're into electronic dance music like myself, there's so many more worthwhile options for PER DOWNLOAD music: beatport.com, vonyc.com... I could go on and on...
Just had to get this off my chest - for those who think APPLE is the end all be all music store ... remember TOWER RECORDS and what they've become... only a matter of time... - taxonimous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actual link
http://www.blogmaverick.com/2006/12/12/googlenomics-itunes-and-zune/ - DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Mark Cuban is more successful than anyone on this site. He doesn`t give a ***** what the naysayers think.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yes... your logic holds up well... especially since they only sold one copy of every cd and cassette ever made.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ TheReport
You mention Apple's market share - when this article talks largely of the music sale and distribution.
eMusic ≠ Mp3 player
Zune ≠ Music Store - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Am I the only one who wonders...
What the hell is actually wrong with iTunes? It's got the selection my wife(who's a total audiophile) can't find in any other place. It lets her get just the songs she wants, and it easily interfaces with her music player.
Sure, I'd love to get music "for free". But why do you have to "Kill iTunes" to do it? - RedbeardUH, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13If MSFT is such a bad company...why is their market cap. 250 Billion? Why is it the X-box succeeded when few other companies could have done what they did. Why is it the Zune will eventually succeed when nothing else does? Oh sure, you're going to say "Because they can throw billions of $ at it." Well, true, but the question is: why do they have those billions in the first place?
- Dallas70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because Cuban is an idiot with guts to go out and do whats needed while others gripe about it on the internet?
- PeteyUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its a good idea imo.
At the moment I use mercora a lot, which is free and legal because of some of the ads in place. I just stream what I want to my pc and more often than not its available.
granted you cant download anything but Ill listen to stuff, see if I like it and then go out and buy it so I can listen to it whenever and wherever. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7cute got him 2 bil. not your average cute.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8If MSFT is such a bad company...
yes, they are. Period. By that logic why not talk about Drug Lords? - If They are such bad people, how'd they get all that money???
Money ≠ Good Company - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some days Cuban's ideas are smart, some days they're Crazy. He's kind of like Michael Jackson that way. You just never know what kind of day it's going to be.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"The advertising bubble burst."
"Google making tons of money with online ads"
why you think he talked about google doing this?
not that MSFT and Google would ever work together. ***** you didnt even read the right article in his blog did you? - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If everyone just bittorrents (what your argument states as a given) then why does online music flourish and cds sell (cd players play burned media, idiot).
Its because if you give the general public a good product at a good price distributed in a good way, chances are they will pay good money for it rather than just steal it. - RandomGuySteve, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"yes, they are. Period. By that logic why not talk about Drug Lords? - If They are such bad people, how'd they get all that money???

A companies' number one goal is to make money. I would submit that Billions = Good Company, regardless of how morally wrong it may seem.
Besides, not even Google is beyond criticism, nor Apple, nor Nintendo. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@ broomett
I'm sure they have NBA in Australia, they also have sarcasm.
Do they have sarcasm where you're from? - amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any "real" competition for iTunes would be good news for all.
- tdskate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It wouldn't matter cus i'd still pirate the ***** out of everything.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The more I hear about the guy the more I think he's just another fool who got lucky and now has more money than he knows what to do with. The music industry would like nothing better than to find a way to get Apple off of the top spot, because Apple has been adamant about keeping the price of a song at 99 cents. If it were that easy, they would, but the fact is that the money-grubbers aren't about to offer anyone else more money, because they want it for themself. They want Apple to raise the price of a song, but keep their profit-per-song constant, thus making the RIAA and music industry richer. They aren't going to give a better deal to Microsoft or Google, because the only entity they're wanting a better deal for is themself. This is why the RIAA will be obsolete in time, and why Mark Cuban is still an idiot. There, I attacked both the argument and the fool behind it...
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11He may be an idiot but he's a rich idiot. He must be doing something right.
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the Music is the Ad (for the band)
and no I'm not sitting thru a corporate commercial to get it - psimac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Microsoft had developed iTunes, everyone would be bashing them for being number one. If Nintendo introduced the iPod and iTunes 6 years ago, everyone would be bashing Nintendo. Why are so many people against the company that's number one in the marketplace? Especially considering they consistently make great products that work really well together. Most companies don't do as good of job at that--Apple really is the king of hardware & software coexisting in harmony. The people Mark Cuban should be bashing are the record companies. Let's face it, they are greedy a-holes, who have been ripping us off for years!
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With these "give music away and make money on ads" schemes, how does a more popular artist (and his label, of course), make more money than some guy that nobody heard of? There has to be some way to keep track of how many downloads each artist gets, and his cut of the revenue should be based accordingly.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only way to kill the online music giants is to offer music without DRM to allow the
user to put it on any device they want. THAT is the only way to kill the competitors. - Ribald_Jester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wish this guy would shut the #$%$ up for once and just focus on his basketball team. Sheesh...give a guy 6 billion dollars and it's like you have to listen to him ad nauseum.
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OMG I am so glad that was the first comment on this post.
The question remains - WHO THE ***** IS DIGGING STORIES WITH HIS NAME IN THE TITLE? - halik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2One more thing,
this guy needs to look at how ad revenue changes as the economy goes thru a full cycles. Much like all the other bubble fools, he's banking on a constant and growing ad revenue stream... I guess he forgot to what happened to all ad-driven companies (cought broadcast) in late 2000/2001. - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's no way they could pay the record industry $0.30/song downloaded and then maybe extract a penny from a banner ad. So they'd need major advertiser who want to show you 30 video ads. So now you have a model where you watch a full ad per song or something like that for MSFT to make money using this model.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked it better when it was called RADIO! We all know how that ended up.
Way to go, Mark. - radio1mike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the problem is that music is now treated specifically as data-- this works in the digital world vs. it being treated as art. I downloaded this 6.5MB mp3 (data) for my computer, but it can not be read on my portable player- so I must download and pay again? Why? I already have the data. Oh but I can't move the data.
The banality and silliness of this system is identifiable when you move to music's nearest relative-- books. Imagine if HarperCollins could regulate that the book you bought could only be read in your bedroom but not anywhere else? Oh, you want to read it in the parlor-- buy another copy. On the beach? In the car? Two more copies please.
The idea of buying an artist out, is a nice concept. But this does not solve anything, since it is one gigantic royalty payment up front. What happens when the artist dies or changes record companies? How much the artist actually get? What happens when the rules change?
The record companies and their consulting bodies (RIAA, etc...) have not really realized that a true paradigm shift has occurred. My mistake-- they have but they just want the old rules. You want record sales to go up, promote sharing, sure it's counter-intuitive- but it's proven that it does work. Want sales to go up even further, slash prices by 50% or more. Who would buy on iTunes an new U2 album from, say, 11-15 USD, when you could buy the same CD for 5 USD? - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He's brilliant and he's right. In a universe where you know you can always download mp3s, you will not only download the file once, but twice, but X times. you will always go back to browse, and learn more, and thus you'll always have a need for that site- it will have the eyes.
I think it should be done, and whover does it first will win big. - philathea80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2true dat!
- spiritamx79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you cant beat em... dump tons of money to make your competition broke so you're the last one left.
