- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+219Isnt Mark Cuban one of those guys that goes around giving an opinion on every topic possible so on the off chance he sounds right, he looks smart? And if your using a cell phone modem for bittorrent (Only kind still on pay per minute/pay per byte afaik), then you need to get a real internet package. You'll even get faster speeds if you do so ^_^
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+168Cuban is out of his league. If he thinks bittorrent will fail, I think he is too old for this game.
I think Bittorrent.com with their paid model will fail, but bittorrent the protocol will continue growing (it's still in the early adoption phase imo) - Sphonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+81As far as I am concerned, bittorrent is more like the future of distribution rather than "doomed". The Internet is very inefficient, bittorrent helps to utilize everyone's bandwidth (mostly their precious rarely used upload) to increase capacity without bottle-necking. Not only is the software great, the theory behind it has many uses in technology to save in data transference.

Stop using TinyURL. It's not that hard to use the normal link, and using TinyURL is suspicious, to say the least. - willis77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+60Cuban said the mp3 was going to die out many years ago...
- b33b3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Thank god I've started investing in P3P technologies
- Richardgm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49stfu Cuban
- AshTR, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46Mark Cuban is an idiot. BitTorrent forever!
Oh and http://duggmirror.com - ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32it might be doomed from a business perspective, but it is great for piracy, arrrrrrrrrgh! and as for me caring that i'm using my bandwidth to send a file to other users, i see it more as camaraderie amongst fellow pirates.
- russellnation, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31This just in.
Mark Cuban eats poop. - amhed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Mark Cuban on his blog: "Why Google will never buy Youtube"
Every news portal, 12 hours later: "This just in, Google buys Youtube for 1.6 Billion"
nuff said... - drunkentoad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Theres a great comment on that article at the bottom :
"Its always amusing when some rich guy who has no idea how people live or what they do claim to know something about us. Somehow the money makes them stupid. Stick with what you know. At what point in his limo ride to work did this wisdome hit him? "
Gold! - solodigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Bittorrent: Mark Cuban is doomed
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19This guy is completely wrong. Bittorrent is already a success, if these issues were going to "doom" it, it would have never got off the ground.
Who is so dumb they install more than one bit torrent client? Who is so dumb that they download big files when they are paying for the bandwidth per minute/byte? The seeder issue is the only one that holds an ounce of reality, and so far it hasn't been a problem. Most legit files have more seeders than downloaders. most illegal files (TV shows) have at least 1/2 the seeders as downloaders by the time it has had enough time to spread a bit. The way bittorrent is made, you can have much less than that and still get the file. Hell, I've downloaded files with 1 or 2 seeders and 40 leechers.
This guy doesn't know anything. - colklink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Well, this is coming from the same guy who said that no one would buy YouTube...
- Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"Conflicting Clients"
Conflicting? The all seem to work well with each other...
"End Users don’t understand how P2P works"
That's never stopped them from using it.
"The P2P model of seeding is a HUGE problem for those […] with bandwidth constraints or per bit or per minute costs"
Sorry, does anyone here have either of these concerns?
"There is a misconception that there is bandwidth savings for the end user"
Is there? Anyone think that filesharing doesn't bleed bandwidth in huge gobs?
All in all, I'd say his entire argument is a lot of [Cuban's usual] shooting off at the mouth. - infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Obviously Mr. Cuban does not fully understand the world of Torrents and therefore must put it down in order to bring himself up, very juvenile.
- EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@ajb2015
Well put. Here's to honor amongst thieves! - naiku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I can see if all major ISPs did packet/frame shaping...then that will kill BT or cause it to finally be tunneled over any real encryption.
- ferrco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Me: Mark Cuban is doomed :P
- brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Who is continuing to read Cubans blog and why does it keep getting frontpaged??!
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Mark Cuban doesn't say that BitTorrent is doomed, he says P2P is doomed. And he bases this belief on the fact that he thinks too many clients make things confusing and too complicated.
I'd sure like to see him say that on IRC... - nace33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Why do people still listen to this jackass?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Cuban is also a partner in RedSwoosh — a company which uses peer-to-peer technology to deliver rich media, including video and software to a user's PC."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Cuban#Road_to_becoming_a_billionaire - RedLion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12this is why bittorrent client are starting to implement encryption (to make it harder for ISPs to do traffic shaping).
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15we all know it's not the REAL cliffosakajapan stupid.
- melophobia07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11No, he is just a lucky bastard who managed to land 5.8 billion in Yahoo stock
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Cuban - UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Look up one post noob.
- Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10BitTorrent is doomed, Digg is doomed, the internet as we know it is doomed. The whole point of technology is that its constantly evolving into something newer, faster, more reliable, and just plain better. BitTorrent will die when ByteCasade is written, YouTube will be forgotten when TheyScreen is found.
Cuban is right, (not his reasoning, just his conclusion) eventually something better will come along, something faster and even more acessible than BitTorrent and on that day we shall switch extentisons update our bookmarks and move on with our lives.
Sheesh, I remember when file sharing involved posting a .zip file on newsgroup, people thought it could never get better. Then WinRar showed up and we all ***** our pants... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Stick to managing the Mavricks, Mark...
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12O RLY?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is bittorrent truely doomed, or is it just "doomed" because Cuban didn't get on the bus at the ground floor?
- ianmurrays, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11that guy REALLY doesn't know what he's talking about... he's apparently stuck in the FAX/Modem era, and thinks everyone is an average user....
- kanemano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7yes, doomed to greatness
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9WEll, you are probably right about the iPhone.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12"RedSwoosh"
thats what happens to women once a month right? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mark Cuban is either starting a career in stand up comedy or his is simply jealous because his hdtv business is not doing that good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Does anyone take Mark Cuban seriously anymore???
Bit torrent makes up over 50% of web traffic. Yeah, it's definitely doomed. ***** moron. - tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6that's exactly what they will do if they are allowed implement a multi tier network sold to home users. If that happens, bye bye BT, but then again, goodbye to the internet as well.
if ( ispNetwork != neutral ) {
informationControl = true;
freedom = null;
revenue++;
} else {
//TODO: fulfill own desires
} - Poon007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As with the last Mark Cuban posting...CUBAN IS AN IDIOT!
- JesusFaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The headline should read: Bittorrent is doomed for paid downloads
i think it will continue to be quite popular in the "illegal filesharing" scene - xfTwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5His points are so ridiculous that they do not, in fact, need to be refuted.
p2p in general is a good paradigm and is on that business, as a general rule, will find difficult to capitalize on. Therefore, Mr. Cuban, being a business man, sees no value in it over other technologies and paradigms that will make him money. - AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@LightsOut06
"I cant understand for the life of my why ANYBODY uses bittorrent. it is notoriously SLOW."
Really? Bittorrent is the only download method that regularly saturates my downstream bandwidth. You must be downloading either old or unpopular torrents. - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Bit Torrent will go the way of Napster. When the illegal content is gone, no one will want to use it anymore (except a few Linux geeks)."
I doubt it; it works off a different paradigm. For example, there are already companies using it for legitimate purposes.
As for the loss of illegal content: any idea when this will happen? I get the feeling that you answer is 'no'. Truth is, as long as there's content to be shared by disparate individuals, it will be shared. Add to that the fact that the BT protocol doesn't need a single central server (just a transitory one that those 'in the know' can find), and you've got a recipe for the means for which the content will continue to be shared. - mordain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe he thinks that torrents are doomed because his companies p2p solution is the one we should all use?
- Uberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We must suffer Mark Cuban because Yahoo! made a financial mistake.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4and anyone who uses WoW...8 million
- dtraneighty8, on 10/07/2008, -4/+7This is coming from a guy that thinks suits are useless and wants his players to come in with T-Shirts and sweatpants.
- codemeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He sells one website a long time ago and thinks he is still on top of what is happening in the tech world. I guess since he's not doing anything else, by making claims like this he can get his name back in the media.
I want to be able to Bury Mark Cuban as lame. - sachmanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3buried as inaccurate. distributing bandwidth from its primary source to (1) increase the user's download speed (2) reduce bandwidth from the primary source is something to be improved on -- not phased out. the man's a fool.
