The part of Africa that is grayed out - Approx 90% is grayed out.
doesn't use social networking - I'm in East Africa (Kenya) Yes, it's true we're all savages, we're probably also running around with a goatskin for clothing.
their princes die all the time and offer me money. - Yes that entire grayed out part of Africa has princes.- trixnfx, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1What was that whooshing sound?
Oh yeah, what dcd722 said whooshed over your head. - springboks, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2Actually, I'm pretty familiar with the Nigerian email scam! They are represented as "skyblog" users. Hardly the "grayed out" part of Africa.

- tattertech, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Well to be fair, Facebook is rampant here, just in different demographics. The reality is that a lot of people have profiles on both, we just happen to have a market large enough to support both services readily.

- brandonhines, on 02/26/2008, -3/+29"I left Facebook because of privacy concerns" is not an excuse when you willingly put information about yourself on the internet. And of course the company logs and keeps databases of everything. It's 2008; and storage is cheap and DMCA threats are everywhere. I would expect every company to do it if for nothing more than to protect themselves. I expect Digg to eventually market ads based on stories I've Dugg up in the past.
- dema, on 02/26/2008, -4/+3Use reply.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8It is a riot when people complain about privacy and Facebook/Myspace and put their entire life up for the world to see by their own free will.
- smacksaw, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Be realistic. Your information is going to come out one way or another. Who do you want to control it? You, or someone else? I'm not advertising my personal info, but I'm not hiding it, either. However, if I Google myself I see lots of hits that are me. I am establishing my identity before someone else does it for me.
No matter what, we're going to lose our privacy. The question is, do you bury your head in the sand and let someone else define who you are or do you make the best of it and define yourself. Anyone can say anything about you they want. So why not get yourself established?
That's not an excuse. That's ownership. - halcyon626, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2One of my college classes REQUIRED us to use Facebook... soon it won't be a feasible option NOT to have your information out there. - chrisaug18, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4No, it's because people want to be on the same social network site as their friends...if I got LiveJournal in Canada no one I know would have it. But, on facebook everyone I know has it
- chaos7, on 02/26/2008, -10/+5myspace was the first BIG social site and america/australia were the first countries to get into online social sites. that's why america/australia are such big myspace users.
- cal0001, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2There were other BIG social sites they just went that big in America / australia. I have to say even tho i use them i really don't get what the point of these sites are. Maybe it's just to keep people from making their own crappy homepage. Or because they don't know about other easy was to host photos and connect with friends online. Im not saying they are bad but i really don't get social networks. Maybe im just a geek but my friends and i wrote our own closed site with all the collaboration and networking / posting random stuff we wanted. And the best part is any time we want something else added we just write it. That's not going to work for everybody, i guess it helps if your friends are electrical engineers and physicists.

- cabdirazzaq, on 02/26/2008, -2/+20Buried as inaccurate. Sweden has almost 1 million Facebook users (with a pop. of 9 million), yet it's completely white?
- Jerky1312, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3The reason it is white is probably because they didn't think they had accurate enough information on that country, so they left it blank. It's really inaccurate, just lacking data. For example, Turkey is also left blank, yet there is a 1.7 million population on the Turkey network on Facebook.
- Le3f, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Also note Japan... white? Umm, mixi is 100% Japanese; how else would it make the list if it were not for Japan?
- robbiemuffin, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1It's inaccurate... at least they must be measuring accounts rather than users.
Just look at the North American sector (which is about 20 island nations, the USA, Canada, and Mexico). Wikipedia has a nice chart here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_population where, if you add the US, CA, and MX numbers you get nearly 250m ... if you figure that the Caribbean's 80 million people can't have better internet connectivity than the USA, the total still doesn't go much past 300m. But using only the myspace and facebook columns for N America in the chart, you have to figure we have an additional 100m internet users. There are 500m people in all of North America. The 400m total means that 4 of every 5 people in north america have a myspace or a facebook account.

- Theunluckydip, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1From personal experience i'd have to say the UK was more myspace.
That said, i have no figures to prove it :P- Supernova36, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1I disagree, some people have myspace, but far more have Facebook.
- simplechris, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Sadly, Years ago i had myspace until i realised that it was evil and *****. Facebook is better because it means most people only use it to talk to people that they already know and don't get obsessed with it, like alot of people do on myspace.
then when i moved to the west everyone i met when i went out was like "great meeting you mate, whats your bebo?" and they were surprised when i didn't have one.
So i think it varies alot by region in the UK - but FB is the most popular imo.

- synyster, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2who use myspace? is fully of ***** that really annoy you(not to mention most of people on myspace don't have taste of styling - their customize page look like *****).
- tauntz, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Add Estonia to Orkut users :| (and a few % use Facebook)
If only there was Rate.ee - about 20% of the total population use it (thats >50% of teenagers I guess) :P - momsshizzle, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1I'm in the USA and hi5 owns all of them. I can't stand myspace and facebook.

- zvezdochka, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2All my friends in Thailand use hi5. I have no idea how it got popular. Nobody was using it a few years ago.
- JoeVet, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I'll be moving to Thailand next year. I may have to look into Hi5.
- robbiemuffin, on 02/26/2008, -4/+1It's inaccurate... at least they must be measuring accounts rather than users.
- TBBucs, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5Sure, put a graph right over Greenland...
- simplechris, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1VIRB is really the best site (in terms of features, reconfigurability, web-standards!) but it will never be overly popular because of longer established networks.
***** myspace. - DeathUnlimited, on 02/26/2008, -5/+2I'm from the UK, Half of my friends use Myspace & the other use Facebook.
I tried to create a Facebook account, within 5 minutes I was flooded with ***** like *pokes* and invites to use ***** apps. It's also terrible trying to personalize it. IMO Myspace is much better, if you just use the spam filters right.
but some people do take it far too seriously
