- dominasian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32i tried the same thing with comcast. When we tried to "cancel" they just said ok.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's only a matter of time until Vonage burns through all of their cash and get snapped up by AT&T.
- Moonshinefe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Skype is actually offering 1-year of "outgoing service" for only around $15USD. Now, it might only be outgoing (as in, you can call people but they can't call you at a phone#, you can do skype-to-skype of course), but that's still a pretty good deal for unlimited calls anywhere in North America for a year.
- Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Heh, my dad does a similar thing with Sky TV in the UK. We cancel, they call and offer 6 months half price, cancel at the end, another call. 2 years half price satellite tv so far.
- tarmithius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This was a story about Vonage not Skype. He canceled his account to go to Skype but got the refer-a-friend offer from Vonage.
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"At some point, you're just ripping off a company that's not doing very well in the first place."
Who cares?
It's not the consumers job to "help" a company. It's their job to watch their bottom line.
He's not forcing them somehow to offer him a "deal", he just found a way to work the system.
(I'm betting that his account has been flagged for "retention" because he referred others. And therefore is getting better treatment than the average customer in the first place.)
Believe me, if you lost YOUR job, and therefore weren't "doing very well" they wouldn't give a damn. - Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AT&T will only buy Vonage in the event that they decide to use it as a tool to destroy VoIP.
- jgarland79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He paid too much.
- pabut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3AT&T has no interest in Vonage .... AT&T has no interest in VOIP on broadband. Now that they own the last mile and LD in most of the country it would simply be a distraction. I would expect the AT&T CallVantage offering to be fading off into the sunset soon.
- dilbertmouse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Good use of Skype's refer-a-friend offer, but was "canceling" three times really necessary? At some point, you're just ripping off a company that's not doing very well in the first place.
- wbeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you have quality problems with Vonage, perhaps the issue is at your end. I've have used Vonage for over 3 years. The only times I have had quality issues is when I download a torrent. I have a cable connection, so I have plenty of bandwidth. The cost of cable Internet + Vonage is less than the cost of my previous phone bill (Verizon + DSL). I have VOIP at work, AT&T with all Cisco equipment. My Vonage with a crappy Walmart phone has better quality. That is saying a lot, because I can't tell the difference between Tape, CD, Vinyl, and radio(without static). So my tolerance for poor audio must be high.
What some people don't realize, up to your CO a POTS is analog, everything else is digital (ATM or IP). The only real difference is that Vonage travels over public Internet vs AT&T travelling over a private network. - shakeeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2♪ woo hoo, woo woo woo ♪♪
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My experience cancelling with Vonage was a problem. The phone service itself is high quality, but the lines to their customer service are very poor quality and connections can be dropped. You will be redirected through many numbers and wait times are very long. I had problems understanding thick accents. It took me months and help from my credit card company to cancel. Making cancelling technically difficult seems to have been a purposeful business decision.
Google for "cancel vonage" and you will see this is a BIG problem! - ScottDaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I eat it too.
- k7leetha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Theres more to it than just saying you want to cancel. I canceled my vonage account and they made me agree to a $40 disconnect charge because i hadn't had it for a year. I said I didn't agree and she said that I had to to cancel the account. She asked me again if i would agree to the charge and I said if I have to. She still wouldn't cancel the account until I said yes. And for those of you that don't know like myself, it is in their terms of service.... you know the little print thats 8 pages long mentioned in only one sentence.
- TheCoreman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love companies like this that are so desperate not to lose people that they will give them everything. Once the freebies are gone so are the people. I hope he enjoys it while it lasts. I would love to see how long this can go on for him!
- SoundJudgment, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And Skype was giving away FREE North American Outgoing service for the last two-thirds of the year. Plus Skype has the advantage of being a full-fledged IM and Voice/Video computer chat service for free. Does Vonage have any of these additional features or are they terminal-VoIP only? It is clear to see who the winner is here.
- bbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've noticed the problem with international calls but never had any delay or quality issues calling within the US and Canada. I don't care about the international call quality since I don't use it frequently and I save 50% on those calls by using Vonage.

- localzuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had vonage in the UK for a while but then decided I didn't need it so tried to cancel. This didn't get any where as they obsessed over cancellation fees. At the same time I moved house and swapped bank accounts and they cancelled my account :)
- skubasteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lame.. its not cool to take advantage of a company that isn't trying to take advantage of you. Go screw Time Warner wither there $35 a month VOIP not Vonage with its $20 Voip.

- bigwink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Vonage is the worst. Why not just get the phone , cable and highspeed bundled. Way better deal!
- ch28kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had Vonage for 2 and a half months and I constantly have problems with it. I just think the whole VoIP on Vonage doesn't really work. At the end, I just went back to regular phone with Skype for long distance call. Sorry, but Skype clearly sounds so much better in terms of quality and it is more user friendly.
Too bad the free service from Skype with Unlimited call to Canada and US is over. :'( - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3This CLEARLY shows that Vonage was behind 9/11 but you sheeple are unwilling to admit it to yourselves. www.truthonvonageand911.com
- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't know what the problem is, I've had Vonage for two months, and have never had a problem. Granted, the service got a little worse when Comcast's VoIP service came out and they stopped allowing Vonage to use QoS to prioritize voice traffic, but it sounds *at least* as good as cell service.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*****, I recently worked for vonage tech support and there's no way this guy threatened to cancel 3 time and got 3 credits. The Retention office base how much credit your given(if you threaten to cancel) on how much money you've made the company already this guy has payed nothing for the service he would never get a credit, also there is no 10.00 a month with 100 outgoing mins plan with Vonage not even if you say you want to cancel. *****, *****, *****.

- scrapir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I had vonage for a few years. Never had a problem with them until I tried to cancel. There as bad as AOL is about that.
- djspanky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1My friend used to do this with AOL. Every time they would try to cancel he would get it for a few months free. I don't think he ever had to pay for it. That is awesome by the way. Way to go!
- omghi2u2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Exactly! If you are old enough to remember what international calls sounded like in the 70's, this is what Vonage now. If you talk to a land line from your Vonage, you have a 1 second delay. If you talk to someone on a cell phone with it's own delay, you better be using '10-4' and over and out.
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2What if Vonage just says "OK, I've cancelled your service"? Now you've lost your phone number. Personally, I'm quite attached to my phone number.
