- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+68That's a pretty detailed fantasy.
- arnaudh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52What are you driving that would sit 12 people, a short school bus?
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41"...and he could sell himself and that is exactly what he did." "...he was picked up within 15 minutes." "He makes $100 - $300 a day"
I love takeing things out of context :-) - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35Sure it is, until they make a law against it.
- Kazanoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31This guy must be absolutely brilliant, I mean, to think up a plot like that to make easy money?
Either that or I'm just an idiot, either way, it works. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30If there was 12 people in the car they wouldn't need to pick up the guy to carpool...
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Think about your comment *real* hard. People use him to drive on the highway, one that is
overflowing with severely heavy traffic. They pick him up at the entrance of said highway,
and drop him off as they exit, all while moving at moderate speeds.
You'd have to be an idiot to try something that stupid.
What are you going to do?
Rape someone in a van as dozens of cars with bored drivers roll by at 2mph?
Whip out a gun and tell the driver to go somewhere?
Just stop the car and tell the person to get out. You a'int getting shot in such a public spot. - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33That is a good way to get picked up by a sexually deranged man and get raped by him and his 12 "colleagues."
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Here in there cars
I made three-hundred bucks
Doing nothing at all
In cars.
*boop BEEP boop. boop BEEP boop.* - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Well...Here is what I was thinking...
1. Old man with a creepy grin picks the "commute helper" up
2. Old man exits the freeway with the "commute helper" expecting to be dropped off and paid
3. However, the old man drives into a small warehouse or some other secluded building and 12 guys gang-rape this poor innocent fellow just doing his job... - middleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21The city receives money from the tickets they issue. They basically just don't like it.
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Imagine he does this 5 days a week. Let's use the middle value to get a closer estimate,
($200 for those paying attention). Now let's work in some basic math...
$200 * 5days = $1000 per working week
$1000 * 4 weeks = $4000 a month.
That's quite a healthy living in my book. But maybe I just have low standards. - redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Ok guys, I have to do this.
1. Stand by road.
2. Get picked up
3. ???
4. PROFIT!!! - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18im bummed, thats more than i make, and im an IT for a school district working 40+ hours a week.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24...how can you be fined for putting money into an expired parking meter?
- blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Whats illegal about it?
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Quote:50k a year isn't much in San Fran, though I suppose he's probably not paying taxes, and maybe works during the day too
I couln't imagine why anyone sane would live in california these days. - badave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13No one seems to calculate the fact that he only has to work during rush hour to make that $100-300 a day. The middle of the day could be spent doing a real job sitting at a desk doing nothing.

"California > New York > Florida > Rest of US combined > Texas"
I realize this is hyperbole, but I feel the need to inform you that Hawaii is in fact a state too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If corporate downsizing would come to a halt, a great percentage of people would be much less transient. Transience creates strangers. Where I grew up, people bought a house and lived there forever, and everyone knew everyone else in the neighborhood. That led to safety, trust, and a sense of community. Now, to destroy those things, just have half of the people in the neighborhood always moving in or out.
Even in my apartment building here, I see people all the time but don't know anyone's name. One day, I'll just stop seeing them, and someone new will show up. I guess there's something comforting about seeing someone you don't know every day or every week even if you're just familiar with their face. - giveaphuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I think this illustrates one major problem in modern society, that being the lack of friendliness amongst neighbours.. If we all had a little bit more of a community going on it would surely be easy to hook up with a friend in the area & share the drive to work..
Its a bit like sex.. Sure u can have intimate relationships with someone u like & get sex for free, or pay to play! - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9the crappiest of crappy apartments in my town (in souther ca) are over $1600 a month not including utilities
- doczein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8this is actually already being done in other countries. when i went to my native indonesia in 2003, there are streets where people hold signs to be "sitters" (the same job the guy in the article has) for the "3-in-1" or "2-in-1" lanes (the lanes with vehicle occupancy requirements).
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+850k a year isn't much in San Fran, though I suppose he's probably not paying taxes, and maybe works during the day too
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i should run protection and pimp out carpool sitters...
- icontacked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7im sure he has a customer base by now
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The city gets more money from a ticket than a parking meter! That's why they would rather fine the person, than have you cover for them.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Things... drive... through your head? If that was the first, was there a second thing that drove through your head?
- chancesarent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He doubles his price during extremely heavy traffic and severe accidents. $160*2=$320. Or around $300.
- jpwhitmore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10If this ever gets around it will probably become illegal because it violates the purpose of carpool lanes.
Damn.... I wish I had thought of this first. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dude I live in San Diego, and man its nice, I have a studio for $600 a month. I moved here from buffalo NY, and I was paying $520 for a huge house. We here call it the sunshine tax. I feel sorry for anyone that is on the east coast. (including my old self)
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Bums and migrants have been doing this in SoCal for years.
- blkhwk86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+550K in the bay will pay your bills. But not much else. Considering he doesn't pay for a car or gas or insurance. it's more than enough for him. The bay area is not your normal area when it comes to rental prices. He probably lives in Oakland(east bay) or some place near there. out in the valley i am from, rental prices are about $1600 for a one bedroom, but in oakland or hayward you could get that for $400 or $500. And that is closer to SF than I am by about 15 minutes(depends on who is driving). So he can make a living off of it very simply. But going into SF on carpool you need 3 people and you save $3 or $5(depends on bridge).
For the "don't want to live in california" comment: There are jobs and businesses here. Sacto is booming same with a lot of the central valley. But the weather is decent(you get used to it being 110 fairly quickly) and there are jobs here. Driving in SF or to Silicon Valley is a NIGHTMARE. But that is where the jobs are. Some people commute 2+ hours from tracy to san jose for a job, one way. But as i said, there are jobs here and it is the gateway to Asia which has a crazily booming economy. - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A real job sitting at a desk doing nothing?
What's the pay like? - oMeSSiaHo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only problem with his "job" is that people from San Fransico have already thought of this. There are malls where people meet up and share their cars for free. They even have rules like no talking. Apparently this has been going on for awhile. Also nobody has ever been raped or assaulted in the time its been going on. I think NPR did an article not along ago about it.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's entirely possible to pay about $2,000 a month for a decent 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in SF.
Prices are at least 30% cheaper in the surrounding cities though. - Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Duggmirror has you covered:
http://www.duggmirror.com/links/Man_Makes_$100-$300_a_Day_Sitting_In_Cars/ - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hm, 300$ a day... count on it.
Now, 100$ a day maybe, but that's 2000$ a month unless you work in the week-end, you'd earn more sitting in a car as a taxi driver. At least in Switzerland... - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14California > New York > Florida > Rest of US combined > Texas
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That's about the time when you start yelling "CALL THE POLICE!" at the people on the lane right
beside you. What's the dude gonna do? Gun it? Good way to grab attention.
Shoot you? We already went over this.
If you realize you're being owned right after you're out of the
high-way, you jump out the car. If you can't do that, have the good sense to have a cell-phone that's
GPS capable and have 911 on speed-dial. Hold it in your hand all through the ride and have it ready.
Flaunt it. Play tetris while you're being driven.
They'll see the potential for danger.
Speeding will get you noticed. You can't shoot someone like that in broad day-light
and expect to get away with it (unlike what Pulp Fiction may have you believe). - Brett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"But going into SF on carpool you need 3 people and you save $3 or $5(depends on bridge)."
That exactly what I was thinking... I know you need 3 people to save money on the toll, but don't you need 3 people to be in the carpool lane period?
-Brett - Scooley01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I don't think I trust people in big cities enough to be on either end of that transaction, but it's still a fun idea.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it's pretty clever, however i doubt he'll be able to do it for long, the city council will mostly liekly whack him with a huge fine, just because thats the kind of dicks that populate city councils.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.digihitch.com/
Hitchhiking is legal in most of the US, and in fact is legal almost world-wide. The most dangerous part about it is probably the risk of being struck by a vehicle, either while being picked up, or dropped off.
While hitchhiking's legality in California may be open to interpretation, all this guy needs to do is be solicited by the drivers to be completely in the green. - philomatic, on 02/08/2009, -0/+3Anyone who has seen Curb Your Enthusiasm could have come up with this. Not to mention it seems very dangerous to me. I wouldn't pick up a complete stranger just to get to use the carpool lane, and I wouldn't wanna get into a complete stranger's car, to make an easy 10 bucks.
- pap3rw8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4doesnt a taxi driver also make money while sitting in a car?
- LabRat777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Some people haven't ever thought of this? When I learned what a carpool lane was this was the first thought that drove through my head.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"The city receives money from the tickets they issue. They basically just don't like it."
And where does the parking meter money go to? - DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like one of the commenter's on the linked page said; car pool lanes are stupid. The goal was to save gas by having two or more people in a car in rush hour, thus cutting down the amount of cars on the road. The gas savings actually realized by this are nil. In fact, I bet they end up wasting a lot more gas than if we didn't have them at all. You are taking a full lane that otherwise would be carrying traffic and restricting it to less than 10% of the cars on the road (during rush hour), thus causing more traffic in the remaining lanes, which comes to a standstill, causing gas to be wasted while the commuters are sitting there (usually with the air on). Open up the carpool lane and traffic as a whole moves better, reducing the amount of time on the road for everyone, thus reducing the amount of gas used.
