Google is going from the web's innovator and trend setter to the web's big brother.
In fact, this comment is probably now logged in google's servers.... I don't like it one bit. - socalftw, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8Because what the world needs is more Tila Tequilas...
- lmf49, on 09/29/2008, -1/+7it's a trap
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6i would like to see mrbabyman's google number on digg
- oakraid706, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Spying on people has always been profitable.
- dougbot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3i keep forgetting there's ads on the internet.
- kraftj, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I hate to say this, but I don't really like this idea.
- rjani, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5Google always comes up with something, it's an interesting idea, looking forward to see how it looks like in practice...
- yurimxpxman, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Great, yet another web app to tell me how much everyone hates me.
- dirtypenguin, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I think the difference is that Google will try to do this on an aggregate level, across multiple networks, using global influence scoring method.
- Hanny26, on 09/29/2008, -1/+3Google is going to take over the world, one Facebook poke at a time.
- cubby, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2This sounds cool but it could be another Beacon waiting to happen.
- dirtypenguin, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Not totally original. There is a social networking site called Naymz that does this using something called RepScore. http://www.naymz.com/help.action?q=repscore
- haloddr, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1get over it, this is a public comment, if you don't want people storing what you say, don't say it here.
- benologist, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2So their idea to make social networking profitable is to analyze the user's data........ wow. I bet nobody ever thought of that before.
- PatrickFlorida, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I still don't have any friends on Digg, so this could spell the end of me. On the other hand, if people can sort by inverse popularity, I could wind up on top.
- reallytempting2, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Great more ways for advertising to pushed into our lives .... google on!
- TalksInMaths, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1That's most likely the case. A marketeer's wet dream is a friend selling to another friend. Beacon was a horrible implementation of that, but the main premise of it was correct. A "beacon-esque" application will be the most likely result of this.
- pcg101, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1it's the mother of all spider webs
- diggingchuck, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0Can you say Google domination? Before long, there will only be Google and no other search engines, then what?
- CaptainChunk, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0Social networks are going to figure out how to make money. Ads will play a role in the plan. Google knows this and is starting down that path.

http://www.konnects.com - tylermenezes, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1Damn, I've been working on this for well over a year now for a social networking app I'm working on, WaSocial.com. I really doubt I'm going to be able to compete with Google's attorneys, though, so I might have to cancel that feature thanks to the wonderful thing that is software patents. :(
- windmarble, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1Great another reason some people will kill themselves, when their Google number reaches a negative number. What is this high school? Do we really need to know how popular we are against other people?
- LogicBomB, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1It's an old principal with a new application. Don't sound so goddam holier-than-thou.
Wal-Mart has been doing this since they started. Truth be told they are probably #1 in datamining their own clients. But to apply it to social networking sites in the way *the article* (read it?) describes, is new and exciting for people spening their $$ to place ads. - Internasty, on 09/29/2008, -4/+3This sounds really exciting, and I am curious to see its development over time. This seems like a huge task for anybody, but if it is successful it will change Social Networks and their importance in today's business world!
- APDSD, on 10/02/2008, -1/+0Who knows, it's all about making more money, that's for google that is... what's next?
http://www.anchorpointdesignsd.com/ - AlexWilhelm, on 09/29/2008, -4/+2This is such *****.
FACEBOOK ALREADY DOES THIS! TARGETING ADS IS ***** EASY WHEN I SAY ON MY PROFILE "I LIKE BASEBALL!"
You don't need fancy ***** math to read English. - chokitofrito, on 09/29/2008, -4/+0But this approach is already existing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMIqGulaLnI
No, it's not rick.
