- MrSprout, on 11/15/2007, -2/+47People still use Kazaa?
- racco, on 11/15/2007, -1/+45My mother always told me I had to share
- AriaStar, on 11/15/2007, -9/+47***** THE RIAA. It's been said a thousand times, but is still so true. At least the MPAA goes after people who did stuff, unlike that goddamned RIAA going after people without computers and now are attacking colleges.
- cha0sFB, on 11/15/2007, -1/+18Wouldn't you think audio + video would be worth more than audio?
- Terra21, on 11/15/2007, -2/+18I stopped using KaZaA 4 years ago, when i thought everyone else did.
- acidbathfan, on 11/15/2007, -0/+13I keep waiting for lawsuits to pop up where teenage girls are sued for their milk money because their sharing ringtones via Bluetooth. Piracy like that can't be tolerated because it supports terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda.
- ThankTheCheese, on 11/15/2007, -2/+14Recorded on a mobile phone? are people really willing to watch a movie recorded using a mobile phone? I wouldn't have thought a phone would have enough space to hold 90 minutes of footage.
- breakaway, on 11/15/2007, -0/+10Of course! To download hard to obtain war-ez like 'bonzibuddy'
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+10Im glad there are plenty of idiots still using it, takes the heat of the rest of us.
- rjosal, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8I heard there were plenty of "dead fish" floating around on kazaa... clearly that level of sophistication doesn't impact the size of the fine imposed.
- puddness, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Don't you love Australia I know I do, What can we say we're cheap
- cmorwhat, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Everytime you share music a kitten is wired with explosives and launched into a US base in iraq.
- Markpdotcom, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8I think you mean "Torrents FTW!"
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7If everyone started using that, then they will find out about it.
- dojonz, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6More like the difference between Australian law and US law.
- cmorwhat, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6no they know about it. they are working out a way to end that too. just give the greedy bastards some time
- swizzley, on 11/15/2007, -2/+7Just shows the difference between copyright violation penalties in the US compared to Australia. This guys lucky he doesn't live here.
- andrewcsayer, on 11/15/2007, -1/+6Another version of the story according to The Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/news/web/simpsons-movie-pira ...
"A young man who filmed The Simpsons Movie on his mobile phone camera has been fined $1000.
Jose Duarte, 23, had "the sophistication of a dead fish", when it came to uploading the footage on to the internet, his lawyer, Ken Stewart, told the Downing Centre Local Court. He tried to upload the footage onto a website after returning from the cinema in July, but did not appear to succeed. Finally the footage was uploaded at 2.30am, but Duarte did not get to see it, Mr Stewart told the court.
Duarte had put the footage onto a website which carried his name. "His belief was you could upload but nobody could download," Mr Stewart said. There were 3213 hits on the footage in a couple of hours until it was taken down, but Duarte himself tried to access it unsuccessfully several times, Mr Stewart said, so it was unclear how many of the hits were from people who viewed the footage. However, the potential costs for the film's owners was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Commonwealth prosecutor said.
Duarte had made a "deliberate and conscious decision to attend the movie and film it", he said. He had previously downloaded other material from the internet, and it was no isolated incident, he said.
Duarte had pleaded guilty to two charges.
Magistrate Pat O'Shane convicted him and fined him $1000.
The Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) had earlier said it was the first illegal copy of the hit movie to be intercepted anywhere in the world.
AFACT had said the file quickly spread to BitTorrent sites and other file sharing networks and within 72 hours had been downloaded by another 110,000 people." - carnag3aus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4I love British dvd's, the little man dressed as a devil Burning disks, and it goes, ''Piracy funds TERRORISM", OMGZ...
- sirflibble, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Most places are safer than the USA... We're not run by corporate backers here so our political and legal system actually works in more just way.
- Antwan718, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Or China, china dont care what the hell goes on as long as you dont talk about Tiananmen Square
- johnkelsen, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4No guns? How will they defend themselves from sharks, snakes and muslims!?
- dojonz, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5You mean it isn't a corrupt idiocracy... yet?
- EvilWalksWithMe, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Good luck with that. Somehow, I don't see it happening.
- piper999, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4You mean the RIAA?
- sirflibble, on 11/14/2007, -3/+6actually no.. Australian and US law, while being a little different are very similar particularly after the trade agreement modifications to our Copyright Act. The difference is Australia doesn't have the sort of corporate hands on the legal system the US does
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -2/+5What was her name, Karla Marx? This is America, baby. Steal as much as you can without getting caught. Actually, both philosophies seem to endorse file sharing, don't they. Nevermind...
- Tenoq, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3We're not, but our leaders are. Just look at how far John Howard is prepared to bend over for Bush. :p
- sirflibble, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3don't be too astonished... 2 years ago it was au50c to the us$... now it's over 90c. And most currencies are still weaker than the US$... except mainly UK and Europe.
- xNIBx, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3If you are used to "american" cell phones and judging by the success of the iphone, i know you wouldnt have thought that a phone would have enough space to hold 90 mins of footage. But n95 from nokia has decent camera(30fps) and can get up to 8gB storage which is more than enough for many hours of filming. In fact, many phones can get at least 2gB storage. But i guess you would be satisfied to just use your "i noes, i cant shoot a video even though 50$ cell phones can" iphone.
- iamaelephant, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I'm a Kiwi so I'm unbiased but I can testify that Aussie chicks are definitely hotter than Yank chicks.
- carnag3aus, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3I love my country :).
- cmorwhat, on 11/14/2007, -1/+4people still use Kazaa? even my grandmother uses bit torrent. and that is a true story.

RIP stevei, a level 4 crochunter, killed by a stingray on dlvl 6. - inactive, on 11/15/2007, -6/+8Australia has stricter corporate laws that the USA. Australian copyright laws abide by international conventions. We also have better consumer protection laws than the USA. If the RIAA tried the same tactics in Australia as they use in the USA, they would end up in jail for extortion. Our judicial system is also independent to the political system. Australia is not BOSS HOG COUNTY.
Side issues: The air is cleaner, guns outlawed, clean beaches, legal drinking age 18, a better standard of living, and the chicks are better looking than Yank chicks. - MalDON, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Shhhhhh!
- Tenoq, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Why? Our copyright law is even more retarded that yours, and until recently didn't even have a 'fair use' clause. The only reason we have that now is because we adopted the most crippling parts of your DMCA. I swear, John Howard bends over more for George Bush than any country you Yankees bomb to submission.
- epyon8282, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2You know what they say, sharing is caring
- Fhwqhgads, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2hopefully they tell the US corporations/government (same entity) to ***** off.
- Tenoq, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2We'd need to multiply the number of shark deaths per year by about 10,000 to equal your gun death toll. Even per capita the two don't even compare. You're more likely to get struck by lightning than be killed by a shark.
- spudnic, on 11/14/2007, -1/+3Didn't you hear? For every 10 movies downloaded £1 is donated to the most needy terrorist group
- astrotrain, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Need a P2P Care Bear for this...."Share a File Bear!" ** picture of Utorrent logo on stomach **
- acomj, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1It was shot on a Cell phone soI don't think the audio or video were very good.
Plus the simpsons movie opening credits Bart can be seen writing "I will not illegally download this movie." on the chalkboard at school" (1), so clearly asking nicely doesn't work. You could argue it should have said upload, but....

(1)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalkboard_gag - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2What astonishes me most about this story is that $1000 aus is only $890 US. I didn't think anyone's money was worth less than ours, now. Good thing they control immigration better than the US, or I would move there, and I would lose respect for any country that would let me move in.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2rapidshare, zshare, almost any image/video/music hosting website on the planet. Haha good luck getting rid of them all. You can't stop everyone.
- diggeddugg, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Astonished eh? Let me sell you some Yemen Rials - how about 50 for 1 Dollar - does that sound good to you? Also, having experienced US immigration for eight years, and having investigated Australian immigration, I can tell you that if you have any skills, Australia is a hundred times easier than the US.
- jaewon223, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1According to his lawyer, Ken Stewart, Duarte actually uploaded it twice, believing he had failed. "It would appear that this young man had the sophistication of a dead fish," Stewart told the AP. "I have sat and spent time with this young man... and I am quite satisfied that he had no idea what he was doing."
his own lawyer is making jokes at this kids expense!!! awesome - theDevilsDue, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1The RIAA sued Jammie Thomas in civil court and was awarded statutory damages. Jose Duarte was arrested and fined $1000 by a magistrate after pleading guilty to distributing copyrighted material. HUGE difference. Not to mention that the events took place in two different countries. I appreciate the disparity but Ars is comparing apples to oranges.
- JustinAiken, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1This. I didn't know that lady who got sued was into them... Jeez, I have their entire discography pirated, I guess that means I owe a near infinite amount of dollars to the RIAA.
- sirflibble, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1With our bare hands like Steve Irwin did!!!
