They are going to start playing music videos again? - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -4/+186People still watch MTV?
- kerplunk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+182Between the automatic play of ads or videos (as soon as you load the site) and the extremely laggy content... Not to mention it is one big mess of clutter. I'm going to have to say this is possibly MTV.com's worst site design move yet.
And trust me, they have had some pretty awful designs in the past. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+94Now the design is as terrible as the content.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -21/+101"All flash doesn't always mean all bad"
Uh. Just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's good. With flash, you kill any hope of web indexing, bookmarking, accessibility, and performance. The only pro is that it looks pretty? - rye425, on 10/12/2007, -11/+78MTV is to music like KFC is to chicken

Oh jeez. And here we go:

Thanks for helping to prove even more why Flash sites suck. I'll admit that the sites are beautiful. But they lack the functionality and speed that I demand and can achieve from an HTML design. - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52I can't STAND websites that automatically start playing music or videos. So freakin inconsiderate. Just like MySpace.
- ojintoad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49You know, they should make the MUSIC TELEVISION website work well for blind users by working with a braille reader and deaf users by working with a text reader.
MTV doesn't care about Web2.0 social relationship software. They are interested in creating a 'cool hip site' that appeals to the people that watch them. You're really just targeting them on a nerd forum who will rally around you in the name of standards compatibility and open source software without realizing they're a business who's primary demographic doesn't give a crap about any of that stuff and stockholders just want them to promote their low intellect shows with good bang for the buck on advertising revenue for movies, video games, and music generated by the mega corps who pay them. I'm not denying they couldn't have made a great HTML/Flash combination site, but I'd be surprised if the MTV Fan-base gave a rats ass. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40While the site is way too busy for its own good, the individual elements are pretty slick, I wouldn't say it looks like it is from the 90s.
But, I will agree with you, autoplay movies on anything besides YouTube really suck, especially when you don't have your speakers turned down - benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38I totally agree on the 90's comment. I thought that 100% flash fad was on it's way out. This site is WAY to over the top.
- Bobski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Well, since MTV died in the late 80's it really doesn't much matter how badly they screw up... They're still dead.
- thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35@rye425
Firefox ate up to 97% (with an average between 20% and 35%) of my CPU while I was on mtv.com.
On digg.com, firefox uses about 2% with a max of 6%, - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -60/+89All flash doesn't always mean all bad...
http://www.2advanced.com/ for instance...
Or maybe http://www.derbauer.de/index1.html
All flash is great when it's done RIGHT. The problem is that most people assume Flash means that all it's for making things flashy. Flash can be pretty powerful when it's designed/implemented with functionality in mind... - yeahbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Nice tampon ad blaring in my speakers.
That's my first and last visit to MTV.com. Great job guys! - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I'd let you know what I think if it didn't take almost 2 minutes to load then crash firefox.
- PotatoSalad, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28@Hickeroar: "Flash can be pretty powerful when it's designed/implemented with functionality in mind."
Both sites that you linked to were made with design in mind, not functionality. I'm visiting a website, not an obnoxious ADD appeasing effects show with video game-like navigation. - adidos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16A reality website? How about "Virtual Laguna Beach" where you get to make a character and play in a reality world. Someone shoot me now.
http://www.vlb.mtv.com/ - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17WTF? There's a section for "Music Videos"? I didn't know MTV played those.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"When will people stop making all-Flash websites?"
I think the more appropriate question is, "When will people stop caring about MTV?"
At least they haven't decided to make a "reality" web site. They could have an unrealistically distributed group of stereotypical twenty-somethings learning to use HTML and making the MTV website as they go. - dark1152, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I really enjoy how this website really shows you what MTV cares about. The advertisements load great! The actual content ... not so much.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I hate all flash websites as much as anyone but company websites are all about making money (directly or indirectly) for the company. MTV's target audience is not web designers. It's probably kids and kids like flash. So if a flash website helps them make more money, they are doing exactly what's right for them.
@LogicallyGenius who said, "the morons think people use IE and have no FlashBlock installed"
Genius huh? I manage over 100 business and organizational websites and IE is still the browser for 85%+. Firefox fanboy stats aside, IE still dominates the world outside of the web designers, IT professionals, and college students. And the average person doesn't even know what flash is much less have a blocker installed. That's a fact - 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17More importantly, who cares?
- heffer2k02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I was gonna disagree with this. Then I dragged the scrollbar. It's actually hung the page...
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is perhaps the longest, most well written, completely *wrong* post I've ever seen.
First, before I tackle the other idiocies of your post, yes, all flash sites are total pieces of ***** by default. It doesn't matter how good it looks, it completely destroys the purpose of websites; the web is a medium of information, not art. The only reason to use a flash interface over plain HTML/JavaScript is to add flashy, obnoxious graphics and sound which only distract from the actual content and drain computer resources. Additionally, even if you use it only for a simple, quiet, still website, numerous problems result:
1. Breaks links. If you have multiple documents on a single all-flash page, people can't link to separate ones, only to the 'default' one.
2. Search engines can't index your content. While you can always provide a search feature on the site itself, that only helps if people know about your site beforehand.
3. Browser settings are ignored. If the user has chosen a different font or background color, it's completely ignored.
4. People who don't have flash, or don't have a high enough version, whether by choice or due to lack of availability on their platform, can't view your site.
CSS has been around far longer than the whole web 2.0 fad, and is far more flexible than you seem to think. For example, the CSS Zen Garden has hundreds designs which are applied without changing any of the content, and unless you're blind, they definitely don't look all alike.
Also, keeping page size down is still important if you want your users to be able to have near-instantly loading pages instead of shiny, bloated pages which load just as slowly on their new high-speed internet connection as sanely designed ones did on their old dial-up connection. It also keeps bandwidth usage down on the server side (not everyone has 1Gbps pipes hooked up to their server). And I personally like being able to load web pages at a reasonable speed when I'm downloading as much porn as I can fit in my tubes at once.
"It evokes emotions, responses, and reactions like no non-flash website can duplicate."
No more points, but I'd just like to say that I laughed very loudly at this sentence. You truly are a master of the fine art of *****. - Endemoniada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12So does Firefox, so quit yer whining.
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14An all flash website is obviously the web 3.0 that online news organizations are yapping about.
- Skrilla360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You are a tool for going to MTV.com in the first place.
- bpvancouver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8you drunk?
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well *****, and I just learned how to make those web2.0 logos from that digg photoshop tutorial this weekend. Thanks for nothing web 2.0.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10grarwara, red, bad
seriosuly, are they trying to blind people (I suppose people could tollerate more of their junk that way I guess)
sorry for the spelling, my eyes are still too sore to read properly - Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The site is so busy (content wise) that it makes my head hurt. So many things are thrown at you at once with almost no organization or way to quickly filter to what you want to see.
I did feel pretty extreme and edgey after going there though. I think I might go drink some mountain dew now - wild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"MTV's target audience is not web designers."
Umm, web designers actually like flash and know how it can be used. Web programmers are the ones that hate flash. Silly symantics probably, but a distinct difference in philosophies. When cretaing a site that is the basis for your brand and equity and trying to share an experience with the user, then flash gives you leaps more than html can. Sometimes, design and feel ARE the reason for a site.
On the flip of that, a site like digg where the site is mainly to deliver information and articles, then html type solutions make sense. The way you get to the professional level in this business is understanding the difference in when to use what.
Anyone working on the web with a rule that says "always" or "never" has a lot to learn about working on the web. - mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Hickeroar
That derbauer site reminds me of Cube. Other than that though, it's pretty boring having to wait for stuff to load all the time. - blackbrutha, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15***** mtv, who cares.
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@rye425
"Cus when I think MTV, oh yeah, I think music..."
Thank you Lewis Black. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For me, MTV died when that fat bald metal kid took over 120 Minutes. Or maybe it was when The Real World went on the air.
Man, I miss USA's Night Flight. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What's MTV? Is this some kind of MySpace thing?
- benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm using Firefox, and it's not the laptop, it's the site.
Making a 100% flash site is just a bad idea. - evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I would think one of the major reasons they moved the site completely to flash was so that everything can be tracked. A lot can be done with flash tracking... also the commercials on the homepage just keep playing, which is i'm sure is another perk mtv likes.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No, but we'll still be saying that AJAX is a dumb acronym.
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, MTV.com definitely gave me that 'not so fresh' feeling.
- zacmccormick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I personally don't like all Flash interfaces. I'm a software developer, so I see what goes on behind the scenes in creating software and I have developed an extremely keen attention for detail when I use web and desktop software. I don't like when anything feels out of place, or doesn't meet the users prediction of what it should feel like. Flash does exactly that, and I will explainn why. When I use a flash UI, I can almost instantly pick it out (Without right clicking :P) When a user sees a scrollable box, they expect to see their native platforms scrollbar. With flash, you don't get the native UI controls, you get some custom skinned flash scrollbar that the user is going to have to identify as a scrollbar because it doesn't look like every other scrollbar on their OS. Don't even get me started on scrollbar placement, I actually saw a flash UI once where the developer thought it would be a good idea to put the scrollbar on the left, which is basically UI blasphemy. Repeat this same effect for the entire user interface, including cursors and everything. Flash promotes altering of the default UI widgets which in my opinion ia a very bad idea. You could probably create a scrollbar in flash that looked just like the windows scrollbar, but are you then going to make one that looks like the OSX scrollbar? And then have runtime detection and display it differently?
I understand why Flash is used all the time, all I ask is that the flash developers understand that they are pissing off hackers when they use it for everything. In my opinion, Macromedia Flash's largest contribution to the web is the "Click here to enter" screen. The only useful applications of flash I have seen to date are youtube/google video, and I also saw a few really cool javascript hacks to use Flash as local persistent storage, but they were pretty ugly hacks and not supported on all platforms. Everything else flash is used for is useless eyecandy that ultimately slows me down. What I also thought about was trying to use flash for access to the local system which you wouldn't normally get from the js sandbox, for extra networking threads, file system access, and then marshal it back into the sandbox. - alphacorvus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As a frequent laptop user, I'd like to say the following:
OW, MY BATTERY!
I stay away from all-flash sites unless I have my charger with me. I'll stay away from this one even if I do. - Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7At first I read your comment wrong and thought you said you were a WEB designer, and you comment made me think you are an idiot.
Now I see that you're just a GRAPHIC designer. Now your comment makes me sure that you are a presumptuous idiot.
Which means you, like most other people who insist on applying their "mad gfx design skillz" to the web, fail to realize that there's more to "web design" than just what it looks like. Performance, usability, and accessibility are all beyond you. This is but one reason why print designers make horrible web designers.
CSS is the "trend" partly because of a backalsh against sites like this, and partly because Firefox and Opera gave the web designers the playground we needed to use all the tools that were created a nearly a decade ago (the web standards: http://www.w3c.org/). - benadamson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It's laggy on my MacBook Pro too bud.
- yeahbuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My God ads are EVERYWHERE. They load whenever you click anything, taking over the webpage. What a mess!
- ldbjr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"MTV is to music like KFC is to chicken"?
At least KFC is tasty and can fill a need when you're hungry. I would say MTV is to music as a big pile of ***** is to food. - CircusNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6God I hate MTV...
