- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -32/+172MS really needs to get on the PR ball. Vista is fine, it won't blow you away but it will work for you.
- neil1492, on 07/22/2008, -18/+123I've never had an issue with Vista. I thought it was a nice change from Windows XP. I just have a problem that manufactures were putting it on computers that could barely run XP as it is. Microsoft has still yet to address this issue in my opinion. I think the $300 million would be spent better trying to fix their operating system.
- latova, on 07/23/2008, -10/+113THE EARTH ISN'T FLAT???
- cdbeshore, on 07/22/2008, -30/+102At one point, everyone thought Microsoft had their ***** together.
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -7/+69I wonder if Ballmer will star in another commercial?
Remember Windows 1.0?

A CLOCK! - skoles, on 07/23/2008, -7/+67How about they just run a simple ad, white background with black text, saying:
STOP DOWNLOADING EVERY EXE SOMEONE SENDS YOU. IT'S NOT GOING TO BE JESSICA SIMPSON NAKED AND YOU DIDN'T WIN A FREE ***** IPOD. - SoopaflySAM, on 07/23/2008, -5/+55I like apple because of Oregon Trail and Math Maze
- sholt, on 07/23/2008, -14/+59You're absolutely right. Unfortunately, "It will work for you" isn't good enough to get people to upgrade from XP, which already "works for them."
- Skab, on 07/23/2008, -44/+831.The facts, It's not worth the price.
2.It's not necessary.
3.It uses 400 megs in idle.
4. They should use this 300 million on maybe fixing vista and or not shoving new os's we don't need down our throats in the name of gaming, then make another os with ANOTHER api we wont be able to use for about 6 years.
5. Stop dumbing down windows. OMFG 6 different windows for changing my desktop appearance? Just give me tabs kthnxbye. - lindstorm, on 07/23/2008, -15/+52Hmm... I can see a failboat arriving in that thumbnail picture...
- Phylodome, on 07/23/2008, -4/+40*****-slinging advertising: It just works.
- timusca, on 07/22/2008, -20/+51I'm sorry... but this ad actually "wow'd" someone? Its lame and has been done before... actually, Tommy Lee Jones did it in Men in Black when they referred to aliens living on Earth.
- dnields, on 07/23/2008, -3/+32So I read the article 3 or 4 times now.... How exactly can this be considered "Anti-Apple"?
Sounds like fanboy-driven AppleInsider wants to make it that way. - Lith25, on 07/23/2008, -15/+43Really?... I run vista on the EXACT same system I ran XP as and it runs smoother and faster than XP ever did. 1 gig of ram and an old x800 video card. I'm so sick of the vista bashing.
- geoken, on 07/23/2008, -16/+44Why even bring up OS X? I can buy a Vista computer with twice the ram and video card resources as a Mac for hundreds less than a Mac so I don't really see how that helps your argument.
- goblindegook, on 07/23/2008, -3/+29"The first series of ads in the campaign were reportedly met with rave reviews last week when they were previewed at Microsoft’s EMPLOYEES-ONLY Global Exchange conference."
Well, duh. - ProjectGSX, on 07/23/2008, -20/+44This just isnt a fair fight. Apple's advertising runs rings around Microsoft any day of the week.
- quomen, on 07/23/2008, -29/+52It's sad to see a company having to make an ad campaign that is designed to counter the LIES of another company's advertisements.
- ferrariman60, on 07/23/2008, -5/+27What? Will 3 gigs make UAC go away or something? wtf you talking about? And I'm running on 2 GB, and it's great, even when gaming.
- WiZZLa, on 07/23/2008, -3/+25TL;DR
In all honesty, I think your friend bought a MacBook Pro just to stop you from talking. I'm thinking of getting another one if it would shut you up. - jjhuddle, on 07/23/2008, -11/+33wow... I am actually somewhat impressed that Microsoft is actually trying to stand up for itself finally... but it's about 2 years too late. Mac has the market when it comes to marketing.
- imightbewrong, on 07/23/2008, -16/+38go copy paste somewhere else
- stealthrocket, on 07/23/2008, -2/+23It looks like an Old Spice ad!
- Epistaxis, on 07/23/2008, -4/+25Actually, it's a pretty good allusion. Columbus was looking for a passage to India, but the conventional wisdom was that he'd fail because the (round) earth was too big. The conventional wisdom was correct, and he failed. But now it's been spun the opposite way, just like MS is trying to do with Vista.
- TheTSArt, on 07/23/2008, -9/+30You look at Apple and you have products that people desire and stand in line for hours, even days, and then you have Microsoft advertising with a painting of an ancient sailing ship. For the first time ever, I actually feel sad for Microsoft now.
- norman619, on 07/23/2008, -8/+28This is great. Means Windows commercials will be funny for once. I was getting tired of the Mac commercials taking cheap shots w/o MS answering them.
- DeFex, on 07/23/2008, -3/+22AAAARRRRRR

7. ????
8. Bankruptcy - jrbrewin, on 07/23/2008, -5/+23it seriously doesn't help when the likes of appleinsider claim it's anti-apple marketing 'blitz'.
It's a pro-vista marketing campaign, openly admitting that vista was kind of screwy when it first came out, and that for the most part it's fixed, apart from the perceived high system requirements to run it. although, for those that care, you might want to look at
http://www.osnews.com/story/20097/Face_Off_Windows ...
what the likes of apple insider often forget, is that it's often apple that fires shots across microsoft's bow, and rarely the microsoft that shoots them back, and never first. it's ironic how acting childish is okay for the steveJ to do, but not when it's steveB that they think are doing it. - kraetos, on 07/23/2008, -1/+18I think what he means to say is that Mac OS X supports the hardware it runs on better than Vista does. But Vista, obviously, supports a lot MORE hardware configurations than OS X does. Both are right.
- FutureGuy, on 07/23/2008, -10/+27Its about time, I would have sued them by now. I have 2 machines at home, one with XP and another with Vista. It took a bit of time to get everything set up on Vista (I am a software engineer and so very needy in terms of applications and then there are games like WoW) but once it was all set up, I find myself hardly using XP. Forget what you heard from folks who upgraded their 5 year old PC to Vista (no it will not work and get over it and those "Vista capable" machines with 1GB ram and awful graphics cards were a marketing gimmick, you could blame MS for that but its not OS's fault, its not build to run on older hardware, get over it). Give it 2GB ram and a half decent card (I got that for under 500$), it would be the most stable OS that MS has ever produced and arguable as stable and at least as secure as anything else in the market, and it will handle infinite number of hardware combinations supporting a zillion different applications.
- banmaster, on 07/23/2008, -10/+27Its also full of lies and 1/2 truths that most consumers are unable to differentiate from the truth though.
According to one apple ad I saw, Japanses digital cameras won't work with windows PCs. Now is that truthful in any way from the folks at apple? - HoratioHellpop, on 07/23/2008, -5/+223. It uses 400 megs in idle because of pre-fetching, I believe.
- LordPhilMil, on 07/23/2008, -4/+20Hey guess what, that ad there isn't part of the campaign!
- ahhell, on 07/23/2008, -20/+36"One of the most important reasons I can't go back to Windows, is that Apple keeps getting ahead of Microsoft with hardware support. Yes, you heard me right, in HARDWARE support. Hard to believe, but it's true."
You a ***** moron. - web2pointYo, on 07/23/2008, -5/+20That should have been the Ad.
Vista. It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
High praise indeed. - svensko, on 07/23/2008, -13/+28At one point, most of the population realized Microsoft sucks.
- insanebrain, on 07/23/2008, -6/+20Price doesn't matter. It's ridiculous that you need 4GB to run your OS decently.
- godzilla8nj, on 07/23/2008, -0/+14"The first series of ads in the campaign were reportedly met with rave reviews last week when they were previewed at Microsoft’s employees-only Global Exchange conference."
Employees-only. - inactive, on 07/23/2008, -1/+15The battle is really for new sales not upgrades.
- macko, on 07/23/2008, -2/+16How is this even remotely anti-Apple? It's pro-Microsoft. It's much less smug and arrogant than any anti-Microsoft advertisement that Apple has released in quite a while.
Microsoft can't afford and just wouldn't make sense to be anti-Apple. Microsoft makes enough software for Apple that it would be the equivalent of shooting itself in the foot. - HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -6/+19Silly Microsoft, facts don't matter in the realm of advertising. It's all in how you dress it up, and sadly, it looks like they've opted to wear the practical but frumpy dress to this dance.
- dcbebop, on 07/23/2008, -2/+15* brought to you by Microsoft Encarta
- Destroytoy, on 07/23/2008, -5/+18Too little, too late.
- FutureGuy, on 07/23/2008, -5/+18I think they have their "*****" together as much as any company of their size. I have heard people talking about MS's imminent demise from the time I started working with computers.
- Rodalli, on 07/23/2008, -4/+17How can any operating system be 100% secure against malicious code? You're doing it wrong.
- petard, on 07/23/2008, -2/+14That's fine then, don't upgrade. The next computer purchased will be Vista though, so there is no need to upgrade.
- versualize, on 07/23/2008, -9/+21I guess he can't run any good games now.
- mojoel, on 07/23/2008, -0/+12I want knobs on my monitor too! No, I'm not referring to Ballmer. Look at the monitor!
- Brandoskey, on 07/23/2008, -6/+18that picture of a boat isn't the 300 million dollar ad campaign you mook, RTFA
