- MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29It looks nice, but I still don't understand why people need to update their messenger every couple months. They add so much extra crap, even though most just use it to send a message.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18In a message window everything except the two message panes can be switched off and in the contact list the tabs can be switched off. The advertising can also be removed by using a third-party patch.
Wanna see how clean and simple the UI can look? Check out this image of the current beta version:

MSN v7.5 Patch Notes
*yet even more way to annoy your friends, and a few more adds
MSN v8.1 Patch Nots
*if you have friends after this patch they must have suffered a frontal labotamy - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Agreed. I'm all about Trillian with the minimalistic skin and I'm not about to switch anytime soon...
- ninjakarl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'd APatch it ;)
- kbunsie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think a lite version of all IM clients is needed. People should also have a choice of what features they want to add or remove on a permanent basis. I guess I'm just one of the many wishful thinkers out there.
- FZero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think it still sucks, too many features. But hey, I'm past 30. I don't send winks and stuff like that. The kids will love it.
- ddrirc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Are there two vertical lines in the top right seperate tiny buttons? I think I'll stick to Gaim and Meebo.
- yalskey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well yes, it's big, but you get the following features on that huge ass window: Stock ticker, weather, news, special offers from X10 camera depot, user mode switching tabs, a "digital lifestyle" flash banner ad, a preview of Windows Vista Ultimate Home Personal Edition 2005 rollout 2, and.... wait.... hmmmm.... oh yeah, an IM text box too!
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Trillian and Gaim forever. ;)
- ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Speaking as a UI designer I should point out that you mean visual designers. UI designers could care less about how it looks, we just specify what things do. preferabbly we also specify what features are included in a product, but a lot of companies seperate this into two seperate job positions
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9turn the tabs off ? wow, hard !
- Overdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It'll be released in April :)
- tsukiyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol @ Murdats. You're right. Emoticons were fine. Animated emoticons were fine too. Then they added the winks, nudges, etc... A friend of mine added something to her MSN that bugs the sh** out of me. We're having this serious conversation, with a bit of an argument, and all her sentences that end with an exclamation point now end with this cutesy, sparkly pink exclamation point-ish... thing. Annoying!
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'll stick with Trillian, thank you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not something I'll ever use because Miranda is god.
But compared to what their other versions have looked like, this is a big improvement. I'm sure it will be welcomed by those that do use this software. - jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hip? I think it looks unremarkable and kinda drags down the road like a dead animal.
- fuckingstudent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Looks like someone vomited after a curry and some blue drink - BUSY BUSY BUSY - dont they do any research into UI fatigue?
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why can't it be just one box with a list of your contacts rather than these enormous icons, superfluous MSN ads, and unnecessary instructions "Type a personal message". Do we really need a hundred green "person" icons beside every name in the list and a whole sidebar full of icons?
iChat and Adium have it close. iChat is fantastically minimalist with the buddy icons hidden and Chax installed. Adium is nice in its skinnability. An instant messaging app shouldn't look like a browser or a billboard. I already have to have enough crap on my screen. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Winks and the drawing was fun, for a while. Then they just became a feature that I didn't use, and get pissed when I would recieve them.. Don't get me wrong, im a huge Msn Messenger fan. But this new UI is terrible. Way too white and bright. I'm 15, and even I can't stand trying to read things with bright white and blue backgrounds... This is Version 8 of messenger, and we still cant skin to tone down the look.
- springfield, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I honestly don't understand how people can use the official client, it is bloated ad-ware which, when you think about it, should only perform a very simple task. Really people, if you haven't tried Gaim then now is the time, it's 100 times the MSN client that messenger is, on top of that it's multiprotocol.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Personally I think it's atrocious. Why does Microsoft equate more funcationality with being better? I don't see how adding stuff that 99% of hte population will never use as being an improvement. It just makes it more bloated and run slower.
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm so pleased that they've finally moved away from that horrible look of the previous betas. This looks far better.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3'MSN Messenger is the only IM I use and I completely agree with all of you saying that it is ugly. It really is with all those tabs and ads and other things of the sort"
That is true, but what about AIM. AIM is so full of crap, but luckily that's why there is DeadAIM and other similar utilites to make those annoying ads go away. At least MSN has some style, it looks cleaner than AIM. Yahoo is ok, the UI is not bad, Trillian is awesome, as always and is very customizable. - ModernDayDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What you're referring to is called minimalist design. Unfortunately those words aren't in Microsofts vocabulary.
- EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4MSN Messenger is the only IM I use and I completely agree with all of you saying that it is ugly. It really is with all those tabs and ads and other things of the sort, but that is why there is apatch. You can take pretty much everything out of there that you don't want and it becomes a very clean program. I am happy that apatch works with the new Messenger Beta because I like some of the new features like offline messaging, and yes I know that the other IM's have had this feature for many versions, but all my contacts are on MSN. I really like the look of the supposed final version of the UI, minus all the crap of course.
- Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Absolutely agree. The wonderful thing about the Mac is that applications usually follow the UI guidelines... uh... one of the two styles (usually Aqua, and Brushed Metal.).
On Windows? We have applications like IE7 which hide the menu bar by default (even when displayed, its under the back/forward buttons). Then we have Windows Media Player, which ignores your Windows theme entirely and does its weird blue thing. No wonder other companies dont follow the guidelines (Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger with their white and purple window bars respectively come to mind) if Microsoft cant even do it.
Then we have Office 2007... innovative UI!!! Completely out of place!
Its almost worse than having to fight between QT and GTK on Linux... at least you have metatheme to bridge that gap... - DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there any chance that one day Microsoft will hire a graphic designer?? Methinks not.
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Windows Live Messenger will support messaging Yahoo buddies this year.
- diargasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What the heck are you guys smoking? The Live Messenger design looks sweet as it is right now, but this future design looks even better.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The UI looks must better indeed... the last one was fuglier than an old hobo.
- Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have a need for a company wide IM, why not set up a jabber server?
That way you dont have to have your files going through anyones servers, microsofts or googles. - SyntaxZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the basic design has been the same for years, nothing revolutionary here.
- ThePerp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3and Trillian has stuck with the same version for HOW LONG now? I guess if it ain't broke...
- Overdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As a former Trillian and GAIM user I know exactly where these comments are coming from, but wideawakewesley posted a screenshot earlier showing that you can patch this down to an ad free, tab free, anything-else-you-don't-like free client.
And yes, I hate Winks and Nudges too :) - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Until chat clients like these support a universal standard (or at least multiple chat protocols) that will allow me to chat to people on MSN, Y!, AOL, IRC, Jabber, , then I will stick to Trillian (personal preferences - GAIM is good too, and Meebo is OK in a pinch) . I don't want to load up 3 chat clients so that I can "stay connected" - its apps like this that contribute to memory bloat.
- overmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2While I have several disagreements with the UI, it's much better than the old one. One thing I can't understand though; why do Microsoft insist on using a different design for "each" application? For example, WMP and Messenger doesn't really fit the Windows overall design. Consistency please. :(
Thank god for Miranda. :o) - Akram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This UI has gone through more face changes than Michael Jackson
- lomis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Same here.
I started using the Pro version about a year ago and can't even think about using another client. - rekka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm never keen on this whole Vista-look thing.
Miranda for Windows, Gaim for Linux. Although the downside is you don't get 'winks' and 'nudges'. OH NOES!!11 - SvobodaIT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is the major problem I have with it. I don't like the Windows Messenger UI at all and even with the Vista styling, it still looks the same.
I was hoping for something totally new. - Oetzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Just looks like a new skin but it is a lot nicer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Holy GOD it's ugly. There are 12 side buttons on that thing, with scrollers for more! There are little icons and controls strewn all over the place. That's the most cluttered IM client I've ever seen.
- Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main problem with MSN is not necessarily the client, since you can use alternatives, but rather the protocal. With AIM you can do things like /put italics/ in the middle of your line. Not so with MSN, no matter what client you use.
It would be a welcome update to Digg as well to be able to do this. - michaelstone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Woo iChat. How simple it is. Except it only supports AIM. Fortunately, everyone I know uses AIM (protocol).
- wideawakewesley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Poor them and poor you.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's an improvement from their current.. horrible ui (7.0). There is so much clutter; and so many links to news stories and ebay deals....
really, it still makes me thing of a mobile version of myspace.com. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's looking very swish. Much better than the previous UI screenshots.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"turn the tabs off ? wow, hard !"
Why should a user have to do that in the first place? That's why I enjoy Mac apps, they're always configured from the start not to get in your way. -
