- DevAnubis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+76Oh the Irony. A body largely responsible for the DCMA facing the sharp end of it. Delicious.
- wiifm69, on 12/05/2007, -0/+55"we take copyright very seriously at the MPAA" - understatement of the century
- geminitojanus, on 12/05/2007, -0/+54Now all that's left for him to do is to sue the MPAA for all of the versions already disseminated by their site. Oh, and for all of the versions those people might have disseminated.
- iamyak, on 12/05/2007, -0/+40What! No lawsuit?
- DarkKnightUGA09, on 12/05/2007, -0/+37"MPAA don't ***** with my *****." Priceless.
- qpn6ph9q, on 12/05/2007, -0/+23There is no way to gauge just how many people 'pirated' the toolkit, so let's just assume that everyone did....
1,244,449,601 internet users * $9,250 (for want of a better figure) would be $11.5 trillion, oh let's give them a generous discount for all the wonderful movies they make.... let's settle on $11 trillion. Not at all unconstitutionally excessive in my opinion. - capiCrimm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19why not all the software in the apt repositories? I say we go for a good $500,000 million. Sounds fair.
- codyman, on 12/05/2007, -1/+20karma's sure a bitch...
- lore, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19"The most straightforward way to resolve the problem would be to post a notice next to the download link that provides contact information and affirms willingness to provide the source code upon request."
It'll soon be time to flood their inboxes with requests for the source code! - Tyr86, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15Makes me wanna touch myself just thinking about it.
- YouLoveFuture, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13name the time, the legions will follow
- Eallan, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11I'm so tired of digg/reddit people telling me to wake up. I'm awake, shut the ***** up.
- ChristBehemoth, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9***** the MPAA.
- MisterNetHead, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9When it comes to fair use, turnabout is fair play.
- RandomGorilla, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9So few truly beautiful things in this world. This is one of them.
- qpn6ph9q, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9Irony indeed: copyright cops smacked for copyleft violation. Oh the sweet justice!
- thedragon4453, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Considering the MPAA's track record, I would think that the only fair amount would be a million bajillion dollars. That way they know the feeling of shear hopelessness that they have given others. Like the single mom that has to pay 300,000 (I think) for around 20 songs.
Basically, in the world of the MPAA, if 10 people downloaded it then that means that there were 7 million distributed copies resulting in billions lost. Or whatever numbers they make up. - YouLoveFuture, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8Ohhhh delicious...delicious irony. I wish I had a spoon, I'd eat this irony for desert. I hope a serious lawsuit does rise from this. Give those greedy MPAA bastards a taste of their own medicine.
- DestroyFascism, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6They never said that to the 8 yo that got sued for 20k after downloading nursery rhymes
- mmxtreme, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6In your face ***** ! I wonder how it tastes for them to eat their own crap.
- Zippo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5They'll likely re-release the software soon, along with the source code. At which point, Linux coders will take a look at the code, laugh at how terrible it is, and quickly write their own software that renders the MPAA's software moot.
- snatchmstr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Stiff copyright accusations and penalties should be imposed just as they would. Go get the hippo critical bastards
- Todamont, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2FTA: Oster told Ars that the MPAA would make sure that it fully complied with the GPL, and that the software would be available once again in "short order."
Don't count on it. Once you break the GPL you lose all rights to EVER distribute derivative works unless the author specifically relicenses you, which I don't see happening in this lifetime... - KataLieb, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Haha, exactly my first thoughts upon reading that theyd be putting it back up :) I WILL request the source :D
- matador3, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2PWNED!
- insllvn, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1better yet, a real number like ten duotrigintillion and better make them pay in Euros, cause we wouldn't want them to get off easy. Remember, copyright violations are a serious crime, like stealing anything of 0 real world value that can be infinitely reproduced.
PS. written longhand, that would be:
€ 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
000,000,000,000,000,000 - DestroyFascism, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2MPAA = Tyrannical Autocratic nut case establishment
- demonsnake69, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1By making the source code available, some savvy Linux developers can make a version of this Toolkit that nulls the effects of the MPAA's Toolkit.
- MrFunions, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1This article gave me a good chuckle. It's nice to see something on Digg that doesn't depress me. :-)
- JustAboutReal, on 12/06/2007, -0/+12girls1cup?
- MarkOfTheDead, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Then get out of bed, goddamnit! Your bus is here and you haven't even eaten breakfast yet!
- Radian, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Hypocritical.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1It would be great to sue the MPAA for violating copyright laws, but I'm worried about the decision in the courts. The MPAA could turn around and use it for fodder against downloaders. Who knows? I'm not a lawyer.
- KataLieb, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1And MAFIAA tactics arent "childish"? You gotta cut some slack man, its so rare we the GOOD guys get to have a laugh these ugly dark times...
- cloudyprison, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Or! I'll digg both to keep the message going longer.
- Royalsarko, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2MPAA (& RIAA while we're at it) are toast, they waste to many resources fighting that which cannot be fought. Wake up! Encrypted and private file-sharing is becoming bigger and bigger, and you wont be able to do a damn thing about it!! See http://www.gigatribe.com for the current leader of this new trend.
- comice, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0comic about this: http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/archive/gpl-killed ...
- Jams, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2I'm glad they took it down, but I don't believe it was because this was because the mailed the ISP; also "MPAA don't ***** with my *****." sounds a bit childish...
- PulpOutlaw, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1I hope this is a joke...
