A typo. Correction:
"(requires Real Alternative)". Long before people were boycotting Sony's malware - they were protesting Real's.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm - stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The real question is:
Will it run Sony's rootkit? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%24100_laptop
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the video? i cant find it anyplace on that site.
- Emptythought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i cant get real to play it, but i saw clips of this on NBC.
to the people who have seen this, do they show a guy cranking the handle and the handle falls off? because that was on NBC, and i laughed my ass off.
also, real isn't all that ***** anymore, especially on Linux. - Kingy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mkjones they said no commercial manufacturer has come onboard to sell them to retail yet but apparently it's likely to cost much more on the retail market. Since the $100 price is based on the country buying one million.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That thing is tiny man.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hrm...
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still, why the Windows key on it?
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd love to buy one, just to play with it or eventually write/test some software for it. Maybe at 200 $ instead of 100$ so some of the money could go for kids laptop and maybe with a different look. I hope as they say in the conference we'll never see them sold into the gray market so we'd rather have a good differentiation between the kid model and maybe the "developer" or "fiddle" model.
I have been thinking for a long time that you could buy very cheap laptop, even for end-users in rich countries. Some kind of cheap device to check your mail and all that but with current WIFI and software (as opposed to just picking up and old laptop on ebay). Maybe you want to go read some PDF while at the beach but don't want to bring your 3000$ laptpp there. There are a lot of reasons why I'd like to have a 500 mhz machine, with a real keyboard and up to date components.
You could offer a real laptop to your kids also... even if they are 6, without having to be afraid they might break it. When you think of all the ARM processors in PocketPC today that are now so powerful, I am certain a decent machine, linux-based could be bulit on a commercial basis. - veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1either which way, with all this tech talk, 1080p, mac-intels, 24" LCD's. It's nice to see people who having little/nothing, finally getting some attention.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And PS what a ***** spot to put the USB ports...top left and top right of the screen. Cords are gonna give those kids the *****.
- Lighthouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wouldn't you think that if they made this widely available in the retail market EVERYWHERE they'd have a better chance of actually being able to make them available in the 3rd world for $100? what is the lame-o justification for restricting it?
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like a nice bit of Kit. I hope everyone can buy them eventually, I wouldnt mind one.
chrono13 - Thank you for that link! - ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forget that. The page wasn't loading up properly.
Got it, now... - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree ^^^
Charge those who can pay for it, 2 or 3 times the cost price, and allow it to subsidise the poorer people. - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Most lazy Americans would not even bother to use the hand crank if they could just take it to the family room (of mom and dads house) and simply plug it in."
Why would ANYONE lazy or otherwise, American or African, crank the laptop for 6 minutes an hour when they could plug it into the grid??
Even with the crank wheel, it still comes with an AC adapter for those who are near power. - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it runs Linux.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So where's the video?
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"No it won't run Sony's Rootkit...it runs on Linux."
Then why's there a Windows key on it? - Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Laptop with a Crank"
- racerxyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are several contradictions here. On the video (about the 9 minute mark), Coffee Anan (I know, it's Kofi or Cofi or Couphi or Goofy) states that the retail version should have a "ceiling on the price so that it doesn't have an exorbitant profit" on it. The speaker states the unit will be built for $110 and be sold for $100. Huh? Clearly, these people do not understand.
- sparty1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have said it once and I will say it again.
The street name for this thing will be THE CRANK AND YANK.
Mark my words. - meus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thesadtruth: If you had followed what they where saying in the show they actually said that it was powered from the computer below the table.
I have no comment for your other assumptions. - sparty1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry MIT, Mattel already beat you to the punch....and it's $70.00 cheaper!!!
http://www.toptoysonline.com/Viewitem.asp?idproduct=865 - after.Linux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1n. negroponte said the software we are running on it will be OPEN SOURCE
- trombadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank God. All the worlds problems will be solved when the kids get cheap laptops...
- Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry but I think this is cool. That barbie thing is crap. I would buy one. You don't have to use the hand crank. The strap turns into a power adapter. OSX is to big to run on a 500mz system. That's just stupid. And I think it's greedy. Linux and only run on those setting. I wouldn't even look like OSX. it would be more like FreeBSD. No eye candy or larger ram killing programs. You would need to add $400 to that. Plus Open Source is more flexable and stable in something so small. OSX comes on a DVD. The DVD is bigger than the hard drive on the system. OSX is cool but to big.
- Fornbogi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve Jobs got recently turned down on including OS X on the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project from MIT. But what if they could do that temselves? Consumers are signing a pledge asking Apple to do just that on Pledgebank: www.pledgebank.com/applelaptop
- ethos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1real player blows....but $100 lapotp....awsome
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks like a great idea, but the screen is very small... I'm not sure, but I am going to assume a great deal of kids don't have great eyesight..
Now Mr. Negroponte seems really um, sketchy... Anyone else get this vibe? - Daecilius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should make a consumer, higher-end version of this thing. It's perfect if you already have a nice desktop computer, but still want to have a small, lightweight laptop to carry around with you.
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forget Apple designs, it will be great once other laptop companies copy the design of this (dispite the obvious kid size and color).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think offering cheap laptops for every student will help much at this stage. It's just too big of a step so I expect many unknowns will bring this down. I doubt any trials of such a concept has ever been tested.
I think a better idea would be to provide each village with a computer center with high speed internet access, and increase the number of computers in libraries and schools. This is what's being doing and it works.
I pretty sure that if I or any of my friends were given one of these in elementary school we would have just played games on them. If you keep the computers in libraries or at school, there's less of a chance they'll be used for non-educational purposes. There's also a less likely chance they will get stolen and placed on ebay and bought be people like us...yes, I think there's a potential for a black market.
Also, there are more pressing needs. I think the money would be better spent, say, by offering the kids free breakfast of lunch at school--kids actually do perform better in school when they are not malnourished. If you give some kid a laptop and his family barely eating enough, the parents are going to sell. - Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are talks going around that the screen can be used to play video and speakers to play audio audio from external devices.
- jojofreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is one of the best ideas ever...
- maloney_633, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great idea
- Kuth678, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1real player is evil... no digg until I see an MPG or MOV format
- Scaster513, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wish all trackpads were that big
- TheSadTruth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is just a HUGE SCAM from Negroponte and company.
How does it work? Well for starters they use the name of MIT to provide credibility. The truth: the whole project is outsourced. To whom? To companies owned by Negroponte and friends. The deal? They are not making much profit on the sales of the laptop, but on the patents they will get after they invest all the money that companies like Google have donated so far. So much for altruism.
What is the state of the laptop right now? What you see there are physical mockups, done by an industrial design firm. No electronics or screen technology has been developed so far.
It is just a lot of hype with no real meat. They use the name of MIT for personal profit. And trust me; they are going to make a lot of money. But what about the demo they gave? Is a mockup laptop being powered by a hidden computer underneath the table. Want some proof, look carefully at this photo:
http://www.itu.int/wsis/plib/detail.asp?y=2005&n=6263
See those tables going under the table? What about the mouse?
The thing is a SCAM, full of vague promises of technologies that do not exist. The crank? Oh well is only for emergencies. If you crank it for 100 minutes, it will only give you power for 10. The reality is that "laptop" needs this really huge power brick. So long for being used in remote villages. How do I know this? I am an MIT student. I have seen people work in this cheap demos. All this hype is just a big fat lie.
This is a cheap trick by Negroponte. He uses MIT image to make it look like is possible. The worst thing is that if this doesn't work, MIT is going to be held responsible and Negroponte and gang will walk away with millions in their bank accounts. - JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This same website has been posted over and over again just linking to different pages.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like a piece of crap to me. the poor get screwed again.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No it won't run Sony's Rootkit...it runs on Linux.
Damn starving children have more privacy than us. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey I'm all for helping those who are less fortunate gather information and educate themselves. But, most of the comments like "i want one" or "I'm gonna get that" is hogwash. Admit it. Most lazy Americans would not even bother to use the hand crank if they could just take it to the family room (of mom and dads house) and simply plug it in.
There are outlets like but not limited to eBay where you can get a more powerful machine with lots more options for around the same $300-$350 price point. Not $100 as most would like to believe.
This is a story that has been posted over and over. Who knows? Maybe santa will bring you a real notebook for xmas.
- digg cause Pacino is a true lamer and pads his own diggs.
