- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They donated the perfect amount, too much is pushy, and 25k helped creative commons meet their goal. For once just let it go... I really believe Microsoft wants to change their image, i don't know if they will be successful but at least we can give them a chance when the do good things.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7M$? Are you joking, they've done some ***** things in the past but it really is getting old.
Microsoft are trying to change their image.. by doing this they've shown a real incentive to acknowledging rights of developpers and artists.
I'm not a big fan of them but the M$ ***** is getting older than ***** that flies turn their noses up to. - JohnH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is still cool though. If it boosts Creative Commons it's okay in my book.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Because it's this kinda stuff that brings Digg down, and makes it look childish. I don't recall /. having 'M$' on their frontpage. It is pointless now, since they are doing some really great things nowadays.
- Webteeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now it would be nice to see Microsoft donate that much or more to Wikipedia.
- MooseFruit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"IMO: chump change
no digg"
how about they just keep their money next time then, jerk - Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@lotusleaf
thats not the point buddy, its that they met there goal and went over. You people dont digg stories for the most minute reasons. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I think the last time "M$" was clever was around 1995.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3First off, no Digg since you managed to bluntly insult Microsoft for doing something nice. They do a lot of things they shouldn't, but for crying out loud, give them credit where credit is due. If you can't even do that, then please quit posting, because you're too biased to deserve to be worth taking seriously. To everyone complaining that they gave too little, I have to repeat rousehouse's question: how much did you give? I'm sure none of us has $25k lying around, but surely you could've spared a few dollars if it's an important enough cause to merit even more from MS than the $25,000 they gave.
And in all seriousness, I doubt this is a simple publicity stunt. The overwhelming majority of MS's potential customers will have no idea that this ever happened, and MS knows this. Heck, most people don't even know about the hundreds of millions of other dollars they spend on charities (compliments again to rouse for doing the research). In short, they're doing something GOOD. Stop attacking them for it! - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Surprise, surprise..."

How much did you haters give? - ionix18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2M$ instead of MS, no digg. lame 13 years old kid
- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Once again, no story with M$ in its title should be dugg.
--digg - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Once again, you anti-MS weirdos are personifying a very successful corporation, whose job is to make money. They do it very well, and they have some some pretty good products too considering they have to support the desktop computer needs of pretty much the entire planet.
Kudos to Microsoft for putting a bit of money towards a good cause. Also, kudos to the Gates Foundation for the hundreds of millions they give to children in the Third World. - Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How much did Apple donate???
Yeah that's right... Zip! - NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a confirmed Linux/Mac user, I have very strong negative feelings about Microsoft (which I feel their software & practices have earned). However, if they are trying to change their ways, I'm all for it. Maybe they can "earn" their way back into my good graces.
Donating money to Creative Commons is a Good Thing(tm) IMHO. It helps the Creative Commons movement and gives Microsoft some good karma. I'd like to imagine a time when MS is contributing as much to open source as, say, IBM. If/when that happens, I have no problem embracing them and their products again, but they'll have to earn it. Once a reputation is made, though, it's tough to change it. - capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2one more thing, do you realize how much MS and the Gates's give to world charities? The truth is if it came down to giving a million dollars to CC or giving it to AIDS research, I would choose the latter. And if you chose CC your priorities are really f'ed up.
- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2br0ken1128, YOU stfu. Saying M$ is retarded.. the company is called Microsoft
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Microsoft was always in my good books...
you ms haters can go to hell haha - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some people are so damn ignorant it's amazing. Microsoft donated money to this, therefor they did a great hting and deserve credit. You haters who hate Microsoft have no real reason other than "it's Microsoft" half of the time. I'm not exactly a Microsoft fanboy, but I'll be damned to deny good charity when I see it like some of you...
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey Microsoft is trying to do something good to benefit everyone, and all that you asses are doing is trampling all over it. IMO they make great software, because NO software is perfect. Or even NEAR perfect. And it will never be "perfect". And I believe that the philanthropy is great. And just because they didn't give BILLIONS of money to CC, it doesn't mean that they are cold heartless bastards. Gosh, you guys, get a life and stop the Microsoft hating. It is childish.
- geartype2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NEWSFLASH Some people are ***** NEWSFLASH
Wal Mart is way more amoral than Microsoft *ever* was, yet people never hit on them, or make fun of their name.
Oh well, I like Microsoft, I honestly think they are one of the better corporations in this big world. - spling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now... How can the tech community twist this to make Microsoft look evil?
- mmxtreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's surprising, but it's a nice move from them... Apple should do the same !
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You'd be suprised how much Bill nad his wife donate every year.....not saying he's not Satan, cuz he is..but man that guy donates a ***** load. It's in the Low billions."
Shouldn't be too surprised, the guy just made Time magazine for being one of the most charitable people alive. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, they were asking for $100K total donations in order to survive, microsoft provided 25% of their goal. It's substantial enough ;)
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and cue the lame tax write off excuses instead of a company actually doing something nice...
(even when a company generally sucks, it can still get credit for doing something nice like this) - apacin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even if it's just a publicity move, I'm sure Mr. Lessig and Co. appreciated the gesture. For those who are knocking Microsoft for trying to change their image -- grow up. You've got to give people a chance to make up for their past transgressions. MS has been handing out money left and right this year, including all of those lawsuit settlements. I'm sure they can afford to keep those cases in court for an eternity, but it seems that they just want to do the right thing and get on with being a good company. Kudos to them.
- toddbloom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft contributes nothing, people condemn them for not giving anything to the cause. Microsoft contributes $25,000, people condemn them for either doing it as a publicity stunt or not giving enough.
I wonder how much everyone criticizing Microsoft in this thread has given to CC. - Braydon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You'd be suprised how much Bill nad his wife donate every year.....not saying he's not Satan, cuz he is..but man that guy donates a ***** load. It's in the Low billions.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Small "yeaaa" for Microsoft contributing money to fund Creative Commons. Big BOOO to all the Apple fanbois who hate MS for being big, and can't see that Apple is an anti-competitive evil corporation/personality cult whose business practices are abominable.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great move on MS' part. Kudos.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it would be more impressive to do it like Warren Buffet does. He intends to horde his money during his life time (he lives a reather average suburban type of lifestyle from what I understand) and invest every dime he can. See, being such a great investor, it would be wiser for him to donate 10 billion dollars when after he dies than it would be for him to donate the 1 billion dollars it would start out as today. As long as he's around and investing, the money the charity could have today will multiple by tomorrow. And when he's gone, it'll get donated.
At least, that's what I have read -- and I've read a number of books on and by the guy.
Just because someone isn't giving away 90% of their income today doesn't mean they lack a charitable spirit. Perhaps they have something better in mind in the long run. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft donates $0 and people don't care. Microsoft donates $25,000 and people are angry at them for not donating enough.
Huh? Get off your high horses, people. Better for them to donate some money than no money. Haven't you ever heard the phrase "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Way to go MS! You get 1 brownie point from me. Use it wisely :)
- synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Nice to see Redmond doing this instead of some big-shot front-page charity.'
is this a joke? you might remember bill gates being on the cover of time as one of the 'persons of the year' -- because of his philanthropy.
if that doesn't make microsoft a big-shot front-page charity, i don't know what will.
+digg - Toshibi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bill Gates and his wife hand out more money to good causes than some wealthy countries. 29 Billion in the charitable fund or so.
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Haven't you ever heard the phrase "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"?"
Yea, but i don't know what that means anyway! - Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe they will make a linux version of CC Publisher with this money?
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Donation to Creative Commons.... $25,000
The arguing that follows in its aftermath.... Priceless
Good on Microsoft for supporting CC. - adriankeith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm sure if you all received 25,000 from microsoft you wouldn't be hating them so much.
you forget the principle of the matter. money was given for a cause. get over the whole crying about M$ deal. most of you hate M$ just because everyone else does. yet over half of you use their operating system. - Rajio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"MS's long-term strategy is anything but well-intentioned"
What, you mean to make proffit? ... capitalism - capn_crunch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Man I'm so leet, I say M$ instead of MS, see that, that makes me awesome and elite. 2006 is year of Linux on the desktop!!!!"
shut up, the only reason you're bashing this guy is because everybody else is. Atleast this guy has made it to the front page.
and if you bash this guy for using M$, you should do the same to Albertpacino:
http://digg.com/software/M$_Pushes_Hardware_Partners_Toward_64-Bit - NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'Nice to see Redmond doing this instead of some big-shot front-page charity.'
You mean Bill Gates? He's donated billion's to charity & is one of Time Magazine's People of the year - he's got my respect. - dontbeahater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+025k is really generous. All the hating is so sad :(. Don't be a hater :).
- kucing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$25,000? Thats about how much Bill Gates pays for his electricty bill.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is finally getting smart!!! YES!!!! Linux and OSS are *NOT* that bad, Microsoft, give them a chance...
Go Microsoft! - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If microsoft changed their software, i might use it, there software is the problem imo, not their philanthropy.
- kryogenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if they only donate to wikipedia... ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft and bill gate has always been recognized as very generous.... they can't always be on the dark side :)
