- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -3/+29This is a good article, and presents some possible good solutions
- hdar3415, on 11/18/2007, -2/+25I second this, it would be a nice feature.
- suxmonkey, on 11/18/2007, -2/+21This is a very well considered and argued list of suggestions I think Digg should seriously look into. Nice work!
- mrbubbleboy, on 11/18/2007, -3/+17Great ideas here. I sincerely hope Digg listens and make some changes. Shouting can be a great way to communicate with friends and network, but the current system is broken. I never shout spam my articles... EVER. I want to build an honest network of friends that submit quality stuff so i will want to watch their submissions every day and help them get their stories popular on my own. But this has been tough to do with this new shout feature. Too often i find myself adding a friend and then within 10 minutes I am flooded with his/her shout spam. I usually try to send this person a personal mesage telling them that I befriended them because I liked their submissions and will follow them on my own so they don't need to shout spam their articles to me...but rarely I get a reply. My message probably gets lost in all their shout spam. Anyways, if you are an honest Digger that submits good stuff, take a look at my profile. If you like my submissions and what I'm about and want to be friends... I'd love to hear from you at bdarbs@gmail.com.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -4/+15I, of course, agree that it's a great article. SHOUT IT! Oh, the irony, the beautiful irony. Shout, shout, shout.
- GovernmentSp00k, on 11/18/2007, -1/+12I wish they would fix the broken comment system first.
- Hayaemsay, on 11/18/2007, -0/+7Right after the comment system and pictures section...
- Googlelady, on 11/18/2007, -3/+10I would like also to see (may be I am blind if it exists) but an option to delete all the shouts that I have received.
- scooterbaga, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5It gets a little funky when the tree gets deep and long...
I think just indenting each level more would work wonders.
Oh, and returns in a post get doubled for me in IE7 and safari. - Hedgecore, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5You *really* want to fix Digg? Make article submissions anonymous. Bye bye favouritism/nepotism, hello content!
- AriaStar, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5I'd like the option to allow shouts with links from only my friends, but to allow shouts otherwise from anyone. I like the idea that someone I don't know can send me a personal message (I've had a few very sweet shouts just in support of a view of mine that was Dugg down or whatever), but I also have a lot of people sending me links to their posts, people I don't know. But my personal friends also only send me links to their posts they think I'd be interested in (and usually am).
So different permissions for friends versus non-friends other than all-or-nothing. I guess this is similar to suggestion #6. - ggbs, on 11/18/2007, -0/+5And fix the login system.. i keep getting logged out!
- HonoredMule, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4Or, you could just stop "befriending" every digger and his dog, and the shouts would only come from colleagues who's opinions you respect and are worthy of attention.
For those of us who don't treat social bookmarking like a social pissing contest, soap-box platform, or marketing tool, life is just great. - JazD, on 11/18/2007, -1/+5Having found out that of my many "friends", I can only reach about a third through shouts, I am a tad discouraged. I really do not shout a lot, only when I have something really good to say. You have been dugg.
- zcreem, on 11/18/2007, -0/+4All this shouting is giving me a headache, personally I don't see the point.
- darkmotion, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3I get way too many shouts. They are so annoying.
I don't even get why the heck we need them in the first place. - scooterbaga, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3Out of the entire list, I only care about the block shouts option. I want new and interesting people to shout at me sometimes. But if they suck, I want to be able to block their shouts... and ONLY their shouts. The last thing I want is some sweeping block where it blocks their comments, etc.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3If you ever seeing someone directly asking for your digg in a shout, that article should be buried. Sharing cool stuff, and cheating to get less interesting material onto the homepage are two different things.
- xister, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3Speaking of spam in general, a feature I'd like to see is a way to report spammers. I have people that befriended me and when I checked out their profiles it turns out that they're just linking up to spam me. I want a way to report them easily, or a way to block or remove people that are "fans".
- hanksname, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3I think shouts are pretty useless. Anyone who sends me more than one a day gets removed. Of course, they work, and my never doing them is probably why I haven't had anything get popular since they were implemented.
- funkytaco, on 11/18/2007, -0/+3I agree about fixing the comments/spacing/edit/spacing-is-fixed issue.
Also, if you delete a person, they are still a fan. At least hide them in a "buried fans" area or something if they're blocked like the article says. - VegaObscura3, on 11/19/2007, -0/+2I think you mean gr8.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2blocked... : P
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2I don't even get any shouts from my friends. I guess I'm not loved. :(
- Trax91, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2I just shouted this to all my friends.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2Or at least to be able to check off multiple ones to be deleted at once, maybe even with a button to 'select all' on the current page of shouts...
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -1/+3Then the spammers will REALLY go to town... Ever been submerged in a torrent of spam before?
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2Completely agreed. I had no choice but to turn off shouts from non-friends recently with the ridiculous levels of spam, but it's a damn shame, as I wish anyone could send me messages. There should be an option in the user settings for "Allow shouts containing Digg story or web links to me from..." [Anyone, Friends, Nobody].
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2The first solution would be to not allow mass-shouts (shouts to multiple recipients) to non-mutual friends. That would cut down on a huge portion of the spam shout problem.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+2'Sort by most diggs' is completely broken, as it breaks all the threads. Instead, it should just sort each thread level by most diggs, and leave the threads intact. That really should be the default viewing mode, so that the crappy comments fall to the bottom of the page, and people don't all abuse the comment system by replying to the first comment with unrelated posts.
- xister, on 11/18/2007, -1/+2I agree Aria. Maybe they should divide the shouts and the personal messages.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1Some people want to be able to accept plain text shouts from non-friends, but don't want the Digg story shouts from spammers.
- AnitraWeb, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1When I first joined Digg, I left myself open to shouts from anyone, because I wanted even strangers to be able to send me a good story. After four months I have limited that to "shouts from my friends only" because of a small number of people who become fans of hundreds of people and then send us a constant stream of shouts. I received four shouts in one day from the same Digger about the same story! I would certainly like to be able to block shouts by individual, and remain open to the vast number of people who only shout on special occasions.
- timbro1, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1GO NERD POWER!
- sarazen, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1There is a way to see how many a shouts a person sends. It is not broken down they way you suggest which would be much better, but it is one of the stats you can find when you check someone's history.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1Too true.
- inactive, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1Stories should be newsworthy and not an ego trip. A lot of the articles which make their way to digg are not newsworthy. There are too many articles which are plagiarised and regurgitated from more reliable sources. The worst offenders are the advertiser driven sites with the news content at 10 to 20 % of the total page content. What digg needs is a advertising filter to remove all the advertising content and print only the information content.
- HonoredMule, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1Don't hold your breath. Digg is (at least in my view) gaining a well-earned reputation for tackling interfaces in the manner exactly opposite to (for example) Apple; no other interface is so cavalier about completely ignoring every little-but-important detail possible. Digg's dev team doesn't get details wrong so much as it doesn't even bother trying to get them right.
- skews13, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1make it to where if someone shouts at you.they can't block you from shouting back.that will go a long way towards fixing the problem.people will be a lot more cautious when they shout
- radink360, on 11/18/2007, -1/+2I just don't understand the importance these people feel to be so popular on a website. I think the whole friend system should go. Stories should be dugg because they are good, not for favors by friends so you can make yourselves feel important.
- VegaObscura3, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Then even good posts never get seen to have the opportunity to get dugg up. Only the ones that got diggs early on would be seen by the people, and in turn those people would continue to digg them up. Also people would start burying everyone else's posts so theirs would be pushed closer to the top.
- VegaObscura3, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Yes, everyone has this problem.
- GloriaH, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1I actually don't get the Shout thing. When I click "share", the Shout comes up. All I want to do is Share.
- MonkeyFit, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1I have to agree, I only have 2 actual friends and I've had more than a few people trying to add me as a friend on digg. I click the link in the email to their profile page and look at their recent activity. Hmmmm, it would seem they've recently added about 20-30 other people as their friends and I have never heard of them. They can go ***** themselves.
- Iaianrocks, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1lol good
- stonKnoD, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1how bout fixing it so it doesn't log me out after five minutes of use when i try digg anything. anyone else have this problem? i constantly have to sign in and out if i want to digg anything.
- WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -1/+2There are three simple steps Digg can implement to drastically reduce spam:
1) Allow blocking shouts from specified individuals (managed separately from blocked comments).
2) Disallow sending mass-shouts (shouts to multiple recipients) to non-mutual friends. You should only be able to send mass-shouts to people who have added you as their friend.
3) Add an option in the user settings for "Allow shouts containing Digg story or web links to me from..." [Anyone, Friends, Nobody]. Allow us to manage shouts with links in them separately from plain text shouts, so that we can limit Digg story shouts to friends, while allowing others to send us text messages.
With these simple steps, 99% of the shout spam problem would be solved. - WiseWeasel, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1People will just form networks offsite, and organize their spammer ways remotely. You can't stop people from organizing, and at least this way, it sheds some light on the whole practice.
- RandomGuySteve, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1You want a different site. It's called Slashdot, or Fark.
Digg is Mob. Mob is Digg. Anything that the mob doesn't like, doesn't happen. You will be modded down. I will be modded down. Accountability doesn't exist here. The mob doesn't have a memory, unless it's something bad. The mob hates for a long time. Comments are irrelevant, The stories are the only reason to come to this site, you could easily get the same level of conversation on a youtube comment section. - Myonosken, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1It makes non-2007 PCs crawl like ***** with two or three comment pages open.
Jesus, I can play HL2 but not three Digg tabs? -
