- mtdna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This reminds me of what happened to Steve Wozniak.
Apparently, he always wanted a phone number with all the same digit, like 444-4444. After he got one, he discovered the horrible truth... he got tons of calls followed by hang-ups. As the story goes, he couldn't figure out what it was, until one day he heard someone yell in the background, "Jimmy - you hang that up!" (or something like that). He was getting little kids! Of course, they grab the phone and press the same number over and over. - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really feel sorry for him -- not having the common sense to either a) change his address or b) profit from it
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And now everybody knows his phone's address. Smooth move.
- anudeglory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Surely, if he's so bothered by it then he should just get a new address?
Still quite fun, you never know what little insight or useful piece of information you may get :) - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is great, digg it.
- squegie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep, i can send a txt to 000-000-0000 on a motorola e815 with verizon's service
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome
- squegie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What a ridiculous idea in the first place. I've never seen a phone that would allow you to send a text with no addressee."
When I had an AT&T prepaid phone, I was told I couldn't send email (yet I could receive). Through some experminentation, I sent a text message to "0", with the first line being "To: user@domain.dom" (or maybe I didn't need to To, I forget) and was able to send emails out, no charge. I suppose many phones will allow no address, or a 0, which in verizon's case (untested even though I have verizon) could go to "null".
The bulk of the emails come from computer programs attached to the internet via either standard email or an actuall sms gateway. - thehigherlife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^i'm sure he's changed it by now
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oh yeah he's going to get some pretty weird calls from Germany now..."
And how is that going to happen? The article published his SMS address, not his phone number. - bloobloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a ridiculous idea in the first place. I've never seen a phone that would allow you to send a text with no addressee.
- giloron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Verizon doesn't have an unlimited SMS plan. This must be very expensive.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah he's going to get some pretty weird calls from Germany now...
- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That really is too funny. I suppose it's what he gets for chosing null@vtext.com.
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article!
On the other hand, why hasn't this been caught and dealt with before now? Kind of scary to think this could go unnoticed for nearly 5 YEARS! - trebe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait for the article in response to all the messages he gets from being on digg
- dirtyword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome! what a good idea!
- aaron.damyen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0null strikes again!
- alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0incoming SMS is free, its the outbound that you pay for
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha! Great story, but it took 5 YEARS for Verizon to get notified of this? Also, don't people get charged to receive text messages?? :)
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just tried registering null@tmomail, but it was already taken. Did one of your bastards read this story and go register it? :)
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"incoming SMS is free, its the outbound that you pay for"
Not with every Verizon plan. In fact, they might have already phased out unlimited incoming completely. - HomelessBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great read.
- melsullivan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hahahahha.... sucka! That's funny (funny 'cause it's happening to someone else)
- Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha thats good stuff +digg
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty neat stuff, good thing it wasn't sent to someone like..oh...Kevin Mitnick :)
- MrMucox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"incoming SMS is free, its the outbound that you pay for"
Not with Verizon it's not. You can get plans for 20, 50, 100, 200, unlimited "IN" messaging, for like $2.99 - $9.99, but if you don't have one of these plans, it's 2¢ per incoming and 10¢ per outgoing. - Lady_Phoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What we have here is an opportunity for a brand new "first".... :)
First PHONE to experience the "digg effect"...
I just contributed, how 'bout you? :)
/easily amused - zverj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, the story is funny, but I didn't like the advertisment of TPM as cure for all problems. Why the system can't delete the messages when no recipient is found?
- LatvianHedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Cool article
- Washandje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That is hilarious.
- wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"For example, text messages from server@vocel.com told Bubrouski that "A student at 4105704297 has just completed Princeton Review Word Set 1 with a score of 71%."
A message from pillphone@vocel.com informed him that "A user at 7325894169 has not responded to his/her 01:45 PM dose of Pronestyl-SR," according to examples of data provided to eWEEK. "
anybody want to try calling thse phone numbers? - jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0neat
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dumbass. I hope he has a huge phone bill.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I use a landline. No cellphone. And when im out I use a payphone with a 99 minute calling card I get at my local 99 cent only store. This way I'm not one of those trendy ***** with a phone that does everything except call.
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0At least before it was bulk messages from a few sources, now every digg reader is going to send him a short message, I did anyway...
What about those phone numbers?
For example, text messages from server@vocel.com told Bubrouski that "A student at 4105704297 has just completed Princeton Review Word Set 1 with a score of 71%."
A message from pillphone@vocel.com informed him that "A user at 7325894169 has not responded to his/her 01:45 PM dose of Pronestyl-SR," according to examples of data provided to eWEEK.
